edit Biography
Born in Hamburg , Schmidt moved with his widowed mother to Lauban Upper Lusatia , now Polish) and visited the secondary school in G¶rlitz . He then worked as a clerk in a textile company in Greiffenberg , was drawn to the Army in 1939, served in Norway and, as a non-commissioned officer, saw action in Northern Germany, 1945. After an interlude as English POW and later on interpreter at a police school, he started his future life as a free writer. After living as a refugee with his wife in different villages, later on in Darmstadt , they moved to the small village Bargfeld (near Celle ) in Lower Saxony , 1958, where they were to stay. Schmidt was a strict individualist , almost a solipsist . Disaffected by his experience of the Third Reich , he had an extremely pessimistic world view. In Schwarze Spiegel , he describes his utopia as an empty world after an anthropogenic apocalypse . Although he was a strict atheist , he maintained that the world was created by a monster called Leviathan , whose predatory nature was passed on to humans. Still, he thought this monster could not be too powerful to be attacked, if it behooved humanity.

They are grouped under three headings: the first two, Tales from Island Street and Sturenburg Stories, are a perfect spot to test Schmidtian waters, to hear the voice of a master storyteller. Twenty-five short tales written for a wide audience, they all share an eerie whimsy. It is as if Schmidt's beloved German Romantics were here with new stories for the modern reader. And then there is Country Matters, longer, more experimental stories written for the adventurous reader. Joyce and Freud are constant inspirations, but Schmidt's unique brand of intellectual ribaldry, shot through with the pain of our common humanity, enlivens all ten stories. Of the thirty-five stories in this volume, only two have previously appeared in English translation. Ranging from Schmidt at his most inviting and whimsical to Schmidt at his most cerebral and complex, the stories are a perfect introduction to his work.

Introduction by Translator John E. Woods This is the first in a four volume edition of the early fiction of one of the most daring and influential writers of postwar Germany, a man often called the German James Joyce due to the linguistic inventiveness of his fiction. The novella was Schmidt's preferred form at the beginning of his writing career, and this volume collects the ten novellas he wrote between Entymesis (1949) and Republica Intelligentsia (1957), most of the them appearing here in English for the first time. The settings range from ancient Greece to 21st-century America, but all react to the stifling conservatism and cold prudery of Adenauer Germany. Bursting with intellectual and sexual energies, resuscitating the German language after two decades of Nazi subjugation, these novellas revolutionized German literature in the 1950s and retain their power to shock and delight forty years later.

    Schmidt, Arno Biography
Writer, born in Hamburg, N Germany. He was a soldier and prisoner of war in World War 2, becoming a freelance writer in 1947. His early writing was influenced by Expressionism, but his linguistic virtuosity and his continual experimentation with language and style made him unique. His prolific writing contained autobiographical elements and often focused on contemporary themes, as in the trilogy Nobodaddy's Kinder (1963). He also wrote a series of literary essays, and translated William Faulkner, Edgar Allen Poe, and Wilkie Collins. End of Article: Schmidt, Arno Biography

Schmidt's creative adaptation of the genres of apocalypse, idyll and utopia (identified by Garrard as central environmentalist tropes) is examined, and his distinctive contribution to nature discourse in the 1950s is discussed as an example of the ability of literature, a complex medium of symbolic representation, to serve as a sphere of experimentation and innovation, helping readers overcome the self-destructive dynamic of modern civilisation. Arno Schmidt was born in 1914, in the working-class suburb of Hamburg-Hamm, Germany. Drafted into the army in 1940, he served in the artillery at a flak base in Norway until the end of the war. After being held as a prisoner of war for eight months, he worked briefly as an interpreter for the British military police. His home in Lauban and, more importantly for him, his library had been lost in the war, and he and his wife were officially classified as Displaced Persons. In 1946 they found refuge in a one-room apartment in Cordingen in Lower Saxony. In 1958 Schmidt moved to the village of Bargfeld near Celle. Over the next 20 years, until his death in 1979, he wrote some of the landmarks of postwar German literature. Quotes about Volume 2: Nobodaddy's Children
