Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) Leading German 18th-century dramatist, poet, and literary theorist. Schiller's mature plays examine the inward freedom of the soul; his first play The Robbers (1781) was a landmark in German theatrical history and spoke of the ideas of liberty. According to Schiller, a play is not a means to enjoyment; it is the very thing enjoyed. Aesthetic education is necessary, he argued, not only for the proper balance of the individual soul, but for the harmonious development of society. Leis auf den Zehen kommt's geschlichen

(from 'Das Geheimnis') Friedrich Schiller was born in Marbach, Württemberg, of Lutheran parents. His father, Johannes Kaspar Schiller, was an officer and surgeon. Elisabeth Dorothea, Schiller's mother, was a pious, serious-minded woman. The Duke Karl Eugen (Charles II), who had control over his subjects' children, ordered Schiller attend the military academy instead of studying theology. In 1773 he left home and spent miserable years under strict discipline, which only strengthened his longing for freedom. The Duke himself controlled the school, and had the pupils to compose flattering speeches to him. "I see before me the father of my parents," wrote also Schiller, "whose gifts I cannot recompense. I see him, and he takes my breath away." Schiller studied first law and entered then the newly created medical department. In 1780 he was dismissed from the academy after writing a controversial essay on religion

Schiller, Friedrich von Wilhelm Tell . Translated by William F. Mainland. 190 p. 1972 Series: (GLCT) German Literary Classics in Translation Paper $17.00sp ISBN: 978-0-226-73801-7 (ISBN-10: 0-226-73801-9)
When Schiller completed Wilhelm Tell as a "New Year's Gift for 1805" he foretold that it would cause a stir. He was right. In the midst of Great Power politics a play which drew substance from one of the fourteenth-century liberation movements proved both attractive and inflammatory. Since then the work as become immensely popular. This new English translation by William F. Mainland brings out the essential tragi-comic nature of Wilhelm Tell but also emphasizes its impressive formal unity.
Keenly interested in the problematic interplay of history and legend, Schiller turned it to be dramatic advantage. He constructed his play to illustrate the greatest possible development of the character traits suggested for Tell by the chronicles. The result of Schiller's supreme achievement in historical drama.

advertisement photos board add contact details Date of Birth 10 November Marbach, Württemberg, Germany Date of Death 9 May , Weimar, Germany (tuberculosis) Birth Name Johann Christoph Friedrich ('von' since 1802) von Schiller Mini Biography Friedrich Schiller was born on the 10th of November 1759 in Marbach (Germany) as the son of a military doctor. Grown up in a very poor environment, he finally got the support of a Duke to manage he could study medicine. He served as a military doctor first, but through the efforts of Johann Wolfgang Goethe he went finally to Jena and Weimar, where he died on the 9th of May 1805. Schiller is an important german author of his time, most famous for his stage plays. They were highly acclaimed- and mostly forbidden because of their contents. His first big work, "Die Räuber", dealt with revolt of sons against their parents and environments, a quite modern topic for that time that was not accepted in every german region. Overall, he as an author is underrated due to the fact that he lived and wrote in the same time as Goethe: Schiller is mainly considered to be a good writer, but not as brilliant as Goethe.

FRIEDRICH SCHILLER (1759-1805) This article was originally published in Minute History of the Drama JOHANN CHRISTOPH FRIEDRICH VON SCHILLER'S earliest dramatic effort, The Robbers , resulted in a prison sentence for its youthful author, when it was presented at Mannheim in 1782. Upon finishing his schooling he had been forced to take a position as army surgeon. The regiment to which he was attached was stationed near Mannheim at the time of the initial production of The Robbers . Having seen his first-born brain child once, Schiller slipped away a second time to watch a performance. His absence was discovered and on his return he was sentenced to two weeks in prison and, far worse, forbidden to publish anything but medical treatises. In 1787 came the production of Don Carlos . The success of this play not only brought Schiller an invitation to Weimar, the German Athens, but made his name known throughout most of Europe. About 1794 an acquaintanceship with the great Goethe ripened into one of the perfect friendships of history with a marked effect on Schiller's subsequent writings. It was with Goethe's interested advice that the

Schiller hing sehr an seiner Mutter.
