Steven Saylor
Steven Saylor is a Texan born in 1956 who studied history and classics at the University of Texas in Austin. Who says a liberal arts graduate can't make good? Before he was able to retire on earnings from his novels, he worked as a newspaper editor, literary agent, and autobiographical essayist. Although the Roma Sub Rosa series is what made him famous, he has also published seven erotic novels under the pen name Aaron Travis-including some set in Ancient Rome (no big surprise there). He also published two more contemporary novels, A Twist at the End: A Novel of O.Henry and Have You Seen Dawn? Saylor's Gordianus books have now been translated into English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, Czech, Russian, Finnish, Norwegian, Portuguese, and Polish.
The Series
Steven Saylor called the books featuring Gordianus the Roma Sub Rosa series. He explains it thus: " In Ancient Egypt, the rose was the emblem of the god Horus, later regarded by the Greeks and Romans as the god of silence. The custom developed of hanging a rose over a council table to indicate that all present were sworn to secrecy. "SUB ROSA" (under the rose) has come to mean that which is carried out in secret. Thus ROMA SUB ROSA means a secret history of Rome or a history of Rome's secrets, revealed through the eyes of Gordianus One of the unusual elements of these books is the years in which they are set. Unlike most serial mystery novelists, the books do not follow one year after the other. Instead, long periods of time pass between the end of one novel and the beginning of another. They coincide with large-scale historical events, rather than a slavish devotion to a publisher's book-a-year schedule.

To fans of historical whodunits Steven Saylor needs no introduction; his Roma Sub Rosa mysteries are some of the finest examples of the genre. Now Saylor turns his hand to a true mystery from his native Texas – the all-but-forgotten crimes of the Servant Girl Annihilator that took place in Austin during 1885. The case is largely seen via the viewpoint of O Henry when he was a young idler called Will Porter picking up casual work and making daring forays into the brothel zone of “Guy Town” with his best friend the journalist Dave Shoemaker. The brutal killings of young black servant girls have the city in an uproar and the local police haul in one black suspect after another but there isn’t any clue as to who is doing the bloody work. Matters reach a crescendo with the murder of respectable white women and somehow life for Will isn’t going to be the same again… These are unsolved crimes to this day – the US equivalent of Jack The Ripper – and Saylor offers one suggestion of whodunit providing the tense novel with a bizarre and thrilling twist. Beyond the basic story the book is replete with the author’s knowledge of Austin and the period; a time when the Civil War was a recent memory and blacks were still only a step away from slaves. In his Roman novels Saylor shows the vast gulf between free people and slaves and here he shows the same between white and black; any black man will do for an arrest. Add to this the device of having the main story interspersed with O Henry returning to Austin from New York in 1906 to find out from some acquaintances what really happened and this is one impressive book – stylish, brilliantly told and very gripping.

Steven Saylor: Last Seen in Massillia
St Martin's Press (Hardcover), ISBN 0-312-20928-2
Hemmed inside the walls of ancient, Greek-controlled Marseilles, Pompey's sympathizers besieging your loyalties even as Julius Caesar's legions blockade all access by land or sea, what would you expect to find? Starvation and hysteria, certainly, as well as suspicion and political intrigue in abundance. But if you happen to be Gordianus the Finder, renowned sleuth of the Roman Empire, murder finds you. In 49 B.C., civil war embroiled Rome's vast empire. Caesar crossed the Rubicon to assert his regal claim upon Rome only to find himself bitterly opposed by his former ally, Magnus Pompey. No one in the Mediterranean world could remain neutral in the face of the ensuing conflict. The merchant Greeks of the fiercely independent city-state of Massillia unwisely chose to side with Pompey, prompting Caesar to lay siege to this strategic port. Gordianus, upon receiving anonymous word of his son Meto's ignominious death as a spy and traitor to Caesar, travels to Meto's last-known location, Massillia, to seek the truth. As a father and a Finder, Gordianus refuses to believe the charges. One of Caesar's closest officers, Meto would seem the last person to double-cross the great warlord. Gordianus braves capture by both sides, a flooded siege tunnel, insane city residents and other perils in his quest. But his investigation soon takes a sinister turn when from afar he witnesses a woman plunge to her death from atop Massillia's Sacrifice Rock.

Historical Mysteries in Ancient Rome - Steve Saylor Author Interview
"Crossing the Rubicon" by Ellen Healy
When a childhood interest turns into a life-long fascination with ancient Rome, the results are entertainment of the first order. Steven Saylor recreates the turbulent times of the end of the Roman Republic, bringing back to life such historical figures as Cicero , Pompey, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. He has written six novels and one collection of short stories in his Roma Sub Rosa historical mystery series, featuring his hero, Gordianus the Finder. Mystery Books List All Testimony Mystery Author Websites Agatha Christie ... True Crime In his latest novel, "Rubicon", Gordianus must investigate the murder of Pompey's cousin, Numerius, in Gordianus' own garden. He is drawn into the chaos of the impending Civil War, as Julius Caesar crosses the Rubicon to confront Pompey's troops at the Battle of Brundisium.
MysteryNet: Could you briefly tell us a little about your main character, Gordianus the Finder?
Saylor:
MysteryNet: You've said you had wanted to be an author since childhood, and you obviously love writing, as is evident in how easily readable your novels are. With your extensive background knowledge of ancient Roman history, do you find it easier or more difficult to do research for each novel? Have you found extra trivia that draws you in a different direction than your original idea?

QotD: What My Name Means - The origin of "Snowball"

Submitted by Clerks Obviously with a name like Snowball it seems like a harmless name.  At first I thought it was.  I was in the 6th Grade, roughly around 1992, I was sick and tired of all the "albino" jokes I was receiving when I was a kid.  Trust me, I've heard them all.  So I was fed up.  I wanted a name that I could be happy with and have people call me.  Then I graduated high school and when I would talk to people and say my nickname was Snowball, they automatically ask, "Oh from Clerks?"
