Steven Saylor's The Judgement of Caesar
The Judgment of Caesar by Steven Saylor
Steven Saylor’s Roma Sub Rosa books, featuring Gordianus the Finder, started out much like Lindsay Davis’s Marcus Didius Falco books – as mysteries set in ancient Rome . In both series, the characters were interesting, the details of life in Rome well researched, and plots well constructed. But while Davis continues to write mysteries (very good mysteries, I should say), Saylor really has gone down a different path. More and more his books are becoming historical novels (usually very good historical novels), with the mystery being only a small part of the story. The Judgment of Caesar is perhaps an extreme example of this trend. As the novel opens, Gordianus and his wife Bethesda , along with his latest adopted son and two young slaves, are heading to Egypt Bethesda has been ill, and she wants to return to

AIA Juror - Steven Saylor
Steven Saylor is a photo-realist painter who works in the unique medium of glazed watercolors, a technique he developed in 1974. Glazing watercolor is a delicate building up of transparent watercolors on a white panel, with a varnish applied between each color. Detail is painted layer upon layer. An optical mixing of details and colors occurs when the light penetrates the transparent layers and is reflected back at the viewer. Each painting takes months to complete, the results of meticulous work and the application of up to 3,600 layers.
Moving to Nevada and wanting to develop his interest in painting the American West and learning how to cowboy, Steven took a job working on Tennessee Ernie Ford's Allran Ranch and later with the Rolling A Ranch in Dayton, Nevada. For the next five years he settled into a routine of ranch work, painting and exhibiting at art shows up and down the western United States.
Traveling to England and Europe to study and show his own work as well as trips to Hong Kong , China and an exhibition in Tokyo with the Society of Illustrators have expanded Steven's horizons even further. One result of these trips has been the introduction of new subjects to Steven's glazed watercolor technique. A few of these include an Alice in Wonderland project and a new series of paintings and prints on the Asian peoples.
Steven's Evergreen Studio is located next to his home in Dayton , NV . The studio is a renovated 1868 wooden boxcar heated with a wood stove. Large windows were added to provide adequate Northwest light. Paintings are scheduled 1-2 years in advance with half being commissioned works. Proposed paintings are mulled over with lots of doodles, drawings and discussion, which helps to minimize visual and technical problems that might arise.

STEVEN SAYLOR HEY SAYLOR:
By Owen Keehnen Most folks familiar with mystery novels will also be familiar with Steven Saylor and his novels set in ancient Rome. In my inexplicable but ongoing quest to de-mystify the gay and lesbian sleuth/ whodunit writers I was lucky enough shout "Hey Saylor" and chat a bit with the chalice and sandals series masterthe author of such wonderful mystery books as Roman Blood Catalina's Riddle The Venus Throw A Mist of Prophecies , and The Arms of Nemesis And there's additional exciting news for fans of the Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa novels ... the second novel in the series, The Arms of Nemesis , has been adapted for the big screen by scribe Donald Westlake (the Oscar-nominated writer, for adaptation of The Grifters). But as yet no further advancement has been made in the filming or production. (This interview originally appeared in The Windy City Times and Out in Pittsburgh in November 2003) Owen: What first attracted you to the subject of your ancient Roman mysteries?

The Paul Shaw series has been around since the early 1970s and Vietnam. Shaw is canny, competent and no-nonsense, and this story ranges from punk nightclubs to the secluded estate of a rich, powerful, mysterious and very dangerous man via some treacherous mountain roads. Bodies turn up at the rate of almost one per chapter, each killed in a different way, and the number of killers and would-be killers could populate a small town. The one objection I had was to the fact that Shaw, happily married on the second page of the book, wasted no time in breaking his marriage vows repeatedly and with a minimum of rationalizations to justify himself. I'm glad I'm not that happily married! Otherwise, this is a good choice for those who like non-stop action. Sadler is better known as Michael Collins. Back to index

Interview with Steven Saylor, author of ROMA
Rome, via netflix and I wanted to learn more about the city that I'd visited several times but actually know relatively little about, before the Renaissance. I'd read the first two books in Steven Saylor's Roma Sub Rosa mystery series, featuring Gordianus the Finder, and was excited about his new venture.
ROMA is an epic novel by every definition, yet also surprisingly intimate, driven by beautifully drawn characters. In my review, I wrote: ve imagination.

Rubicon by Steven Saylor (St. Martin’s Press, $23.95, V) ISBN 0-312-20576-7 Gordianus the Finder is back in the new mystery by Steven Saylor. If you haven’t had the pleasure of his company, this tale finds him a little older, a little wiser, and perhaps more provoked by human downfall than he would like to be. This is the sixth novel featuring Gordianus and ancient Rome as his backdrop. (If you haven’t read any of Saylor’s previous work, best start at the beginning of this excellent series with Roman Blood Gordianus is now nearing sixty, and has settled happily into life with his wife (his former slave) and various natural, adopted and orphaned children. He lives comfortably in his home on the Palatine, a well-to-do area in Rome. Having survived many adventures and intrigues involving the likes of Crassus, Cicero and Catalina (great figures from history who come alive with Saylor’s storytelling) he seems to be less interested in his old life and ready to be a grandfather. Just as he is getting used to a quieter life, however, a man is found murdered in his garden. Numerius Pompeius, a well-liked young man with political ties, has come to visit the Finder. Before he is able to relate the purpose of the visit, he is mysteriously strangled by some unknown intruder. Gordianus finds himself in immediate trouble due to Numerius’s family ties: he was the much loved younger cousin of Pompey, “the Great One.” Before Pompey descends upon his household, Gordianus and his clever daughter Diana are able to decipher a coded message discovered in a secret compartment of Numerius’s shoe. Written in a code of Greek and Latin letters, they discover that Numerius was collecting information on Gordianus, presumably to report back to his powerful cousin. When Pompey roars into the situation, Gordianus finds himself in a terrible situation. Rome is in a state of unrest, on the verge of chaos. Caesar and Pompey are in a power struggle which is threatening the stability of millions of people. Who is Gordianus loyal to? The arrogant and frightening Pompey? Or the brilliant General Caesar, who commands Meto, Gordianus’s son?
