page: Now best known for his highly successful mystery novels set in ancient Rome, Steven Saylor began his writing career by publishing erotica under the pen-name Aaron Travis. Steven Saylor grew up in the heart of Texas. He was born in the Gulf coast city of Port Lavaca on March 23, 1956, but his parents divorced when he was a small boy, and his mother moved their three children to Dallas, where she attended secretarial school. Upon completing the course she settled her family in the small town of Goldthwaite in the hill country, where her mother lived. Sponsor Message.
The family was poor, but Saylor recalls that his mother was a resourceful manager. She also valued education and encouraged her children to strive for academic success. While life in a small country town may have its idyllic moments, it can also present an awkward situation for those who diverge from the local norm. Saylor recognized at an early age that he was one who did.

A Mist of Prophecies by Steven Saylor Published by St. Martin's Minotaur 288 pages, 2002 Buy it online "With the Romans, we have cookbooks, letters, erotic poetry, political speeches, natural history. We just have an enormous amount of literary source material that tells us not just what happened, but how did these people really think, what motivated them, what were their personalities like? And the great people on the world stage, how did their personalities clash? We have a lot of drama. There're good stories, good material." The legend of the Gordian knot runs roughly thus: For centuries, an oxcart sat in a temple square in Turkey, its yoke and shaft bound by an elaborate knot. Lured by a prophecy that whoever managed to undo the knot would become the ruler of all Asia, many nimble-fingered challengers attempted to unravel its threads. But the knot remained tied until the day that Alexander the Great rode into town.
Bent on conquering Asia, with army in tow, Alexander could not pass up the Gordian knot and its legend. He pondered the problem for a while before muttering, "It makes no difference how it is loosed." And, drawing his sword, he severed the knot with one stroke.

Steven talked enthusiastically of his work, which has met with popular and critical success in the USA and is now being published here by Robinson to great acclaim from both readers and reviewers.
Born in small-town Texas in 1956, his first exposure to the classical world was a crudely-censored version of Cleopatra, which his older brother took him to see at the local drive-in. Similar films followed - Ben Hur, Spartacus, Jason and the Argonauts. I read all of her stuff. I love those books, of course.'He knew from an early age that he wanted to be not so much a writer as an author.

    Catilina's Riddle
    Steven Saylor
Ivy Books 1993 A book review by Danny Yee Catilina's Riddle is the third in a series of historical mystery novels featuring Gordianus the Finder. This time the background is the "conspiracy" of Catilina, and the mystery component is confined to a rather uninteresting subplot, with the confrontation between Cicero and Catilina taking most of the attention. Mostly this is described third hand in set piece speeches reported by messengers, and so lacks any kind of immediacy. The result is not terribly engaging as a novel, and will probably really only appeal to those with an interest in the history. (This is, strangely enough, quite the opposite to Arms of Nemesis , the preceding novel in the series.) The basic thesis of Catilina's Riddle is that Catalina has received a bad press from historians, who haven't been sceptical enough of the rather biased portrayals of Cicero and Sallust. It's not a complete whitewash, however, and (though I'm no expert on the period) seems like a rather plausible reconstruction of events. Of course (as Saylor discusses in an Author's Note) this idea is not novel and has been covered in the technical literature, and the student of history may prefer to look there. Catalina's Riddle is an uneasy amalgam of genres and unlikely to be a great success as a popular mystery, which is what it is being marketed as.
