In this final book of the series, Sayers displays her attained mastery of the genre. Peter and Harriet are married at last and off on their honeymoon. Unfortunately, a murder takes place in their home, and they're off. Busman's Honeymoon's mystery is good, and the puzzle first-rate, but a great deal of the book involves the pair adjusting to married life and to each other. This book is a tour de force and not to be missed by mystery lovers....

Vane herself has just recently been ac...

Outside of a Dog: Kate Nepveu's Book Log
Monday, October 2, 2006 For the next Dorothy Sayers collection in my re-read, Hangman's Holiday , I actually read the original collection rather than the stories reprinted in Lord Peter This collection also has several stories featuring Montague Egg, travelling salesman of wine and spirits. I find, on a re-read, that I don't like Montague Egg. This may not be his fault. His name conjures up a bald smarmy man in my mind's eye, and though he is actually young and fair-haired, some of that smarmy image carries over to my reading of his dialogue, fairly or unfairly. There are two other stories in the collection, "The Man Who Knew How" and "The Fountain Plays," both of which are kind of unpleasant. What it comes down to is, I don't principally read Sayers for the puzzles, so I'm just not going to like her short stories very much.

Dorothy Leigh Sayers (Oxford, 13 June 1893 – Witham, 17 December 1957) was a British author, translator, student of classical and modern languages, and Christian humanist. Sayers is best known for her Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, a series of novels and short stories featuring an English aristocrat who is an amateur sleuth. Sayers was born in Oxford, where her father, the Rev. Henry Sayers, M.A., was chaplain of Christ Church, Oxford and headmaster of the Choir School. She was educated at Somerville College, Oxford, taking first-class honours in modern languages. Although women could not be granted degrees at that time, Sayers was among the first to receive a degree when the situation changed a few years later. Sayers worked as a teacher and later as a copywriter in an advertising agency, S.H. Benson's, in London. This gave her useful insight into the advertising industry which she used in one of her mysteries, Murder Must Advertise Fearing the effect her unmarried pregnancy would have on her parents, who were in their 70s, Sayers opted to hide herself away from friends and family. She continued to work at Benson's until the beginning of her last trimester, at which point she pleaded exhaustion and took an extended leave. She went alone to a "mother's hospital" under an assumed name and the child, John Anthony, was born January 3, 1924, at Southbourne, Hampshire. She remained with John for three weeks, nursing and caring for him.

Dorothy L. Sayers: The Lord Peter Wimsey Stories
A Chronology of Lord Peter Wimsey Stories
I created this page because back when I started reading the Peter Wimsey stories - around 1999 - I wanted to know what order to read them in. To my surprise, no one had assembled such a page on the Web. So I decided to give it a shot myself. The goal of this chronology is to provide a guide for the order in which the stories should be read, and therefore I've avoided giving spoilers in this chronology. (I've also been doing the same for Margery Allingham's Albert Campion series Stories in italics are novels, while those in "quotes" are short stories. All the short stories can be found in the volume Lord Peter . The short stories rarely give a clue as to when they occur, so I've kept them in the order in which they appear in that volume unless the story gives me reason to place it elsewhere. Year Story Comments "The Vindictive Story of the Footsteps that Ran" Early in the story is the sentence, "It was a Sunday afternoon in that halcyon summer of 1921." This then is the chronologically earliest Lord Peter story, although "Copper Fingers" has a flashback which occurs in 1920. Whose Body?

The Nine Tailors - Dorothy Sayers
I suspect one of the reasons Dorothy Sayers' books have not quite stood the test of time in the same way Agatha Christie's have is because the subject matter is sometimes totally archaic and obscure. The Nine Tailors in the title of this book is the name of a church bell, not a reference to clothes makers.
Lord Peter Wimsey has a car accident outside a village, arriving just in time to assist with a 9 hour church bell ringing marathon. He just happens to be an expert in ringing the specific bell whose normal ringer has been laid up with the flu. It's not long before an unknown body is found buried in one of the church graves (belonging to someone else). Identifying this unknown body and trying to work out how he died and who buried him is the challenge this time for Lord Peter.
There is a clever twist at the end but I spent most of the book bewildered by all the references to bell names and rings. Historically interesting and a clever puzzle but too obscure a setting for most 21st century readers.

Dorothy L Sayers in Galloway It is 75 years since the celebrated author Dorothy L Sayers and her husband Mac Fleming came to Galloway. They first stayed at the Anwoth Hotel in Gatehouse of Fleet in 1928 and from 1929 rented a studio in The High Street, Kirkcudbright next door to the well-known artist Charles Oppenheimer. They got to know Galloway well, especially the artistic community in Kirkcudbright and Gatehouse, on which her detective novel The Five Red Herrings is based.
At the beginning of the story we find Wimsey enjoying the simple life in Kirkcudbright, living down the Bluegate close, a thinly veiled Greengate, the home of Jessie M King and E A Taylor, when he hears of the death of one of the characters an artist Campbell, who lives at Gatehouse. Wimsey becomes involved in the search for the murderer among the six most likely suspects, all artists, supposedly living in Kirkcudbright or Gatehouse.
Artist Hamish Paterson in his Austin 7 outside the Anwoth in 1930. In the big Buick alongside is the daughter of one of the owners of the Bobbin Mill.
Below is a reconstruction taken this October during a vintage car rally as part of the celebrations.
