    Mediocre (1/5)
I first read this on the 27th January 2004. This is the second volume of Robert Sawyer's trilogy. In the first, " Hominids ". the neanderthal scientist Ponter Boddit was transported from his world to ours. Surprisingly, well at least, much to my surprise, this resulted in a most enjoyable read. This time around, the neanderthals reopen the gateway rather more permanently than last time. Ponter takes geneticist Mary Vaughn across to his world and the rest of the book is spent describing Mary's provincial attitudes when confronted with an alien culture. What's it got? Travel to parallel worlds, neanderthals and mammoths, ecological concerns, moralizing about crime and religion and (hee, hee) alien (well, interspecies) sex. But little of interest. A big disappointment. Loaded on the 29th February 2004. Cover by Donato

I call myself a librarian, though technically I work as a Library technician in a college. I used to be a cataloguer and I still believe Dewey is more fun than LCC.

Review: The Hominids by Robert J Sawyer
I'm surprised at how quickly I finished this book. I only just bought it Thursday evening and now I'm done! And it certainly wasn't an easy read.
In my heart I've always been a math and science kind of person, but life does what it does and I ended up in the humanities instead. Certainly, I don't regret that, just sometimes I miss all the discussions and the logicality (not a word is it?) of it all. Since I don't have cable I can't watch the Discovery channel, so I'm left with reading.
So where is this all going? Basically, I have friends who are in various bookclubs but they are all reading the Hominids because that is our One Book One Community selection. None of my friends are really enjoying the read; they are doing it out of a sense of obligation. I, on the other hand, picked up the book for 2 reasons - 1) one of my friends mentioned to me that a large part of the book takes place in Sudbury and at

Home REVIEW: Mindscan by Robert J. Sawyer REVIEW SUMMARY : A first-rate story with widespread appeal. MY RATING BRIEF SYNOPSIS : Jake Sullivan uploads his mind into a new, artificial body. MY REVIEW
    PROS
: Gives rise to thought-provoking issues; never a dull moment; compelling and page-turning; offers something for casual and hardcore sf fans alike.
CONS : The multiple references to twentieth-century pop icons were distracting.
BOTTOM LINE : A thought-provoking, page-turning book. One of the thrills I get from reading science fiction is when the story makes you think about implications of technology. Not in a "wow. That's cool!" kind of way which is more of a sense-of-wonder reaction, but in terms of realism; a way that makes you truly wonder about how things are defined, perceived and interpreted. I'm talking about thought-provoking issues that push limits of how we think about things. In Mindscan , Robert J. Sawyer has created a story that does just that, and uses sound science to do it. The Mindscan process in Sawyer's book, offered to the wealthy by the Immortex Corporation, allows a person's mind to be transferred into an artificial body who then legally assumes the role of the biological person. And there are perks. The new body can be cured of the old biological ills, can be re-sculpted to have a more youthful appearance (indeed, most Mindscan customers are the elderly looking for immortality), do not require sleep and can even be augmented with super-strength. After Mindscan, the biological original who has signed over all rights of personhood is brought to the far side of the moon where Immortex has established New Eden, a lunar paradise where the biologicals can live out their remaining days.
