Ficlets Author Interview: Robert J. Sawyer
Look! Another Author Interview! I'm on fire over there at Ficlets. This time around I'm interviewing none other than Robert J. Sawyer , who is talking about his new book Rollback and opining on a number of subjects relating to science fiction, Canada, the position of fiction in society, and the various intersections of each. And he also explains how Margaret Atwood can get away with suggesting that she doesn't write science fiction (hint: it has something to do with being Canadian. No, really). It's a hella interesting interview, and if you don't read it, it will eventually rank as one of the great missed opportunities of your life, and the regret will eat at you like a ravenous polar bear. Yes, just like that . And you know how ravenous polar bears can be. Yes, I'm all about the Canadians today. Rock on , frosty northern neighbors! Posted by john at June 27, 2007 09:43 AM

Sean I find your love of Canada sickening. They are obviously on the brink of invading the US. Two-thirds of their population lives near the US border ( http://tinyurl.com/2gz4ke ). Wake up and smell the Canadian Bacon before it's too late.

Stories and Essays by Robert J. Sawyer
Cover by Jael
Robert J. Sawyer established his reputation as a fine novelist when he burst on the science fiction scene with Golden Fleece in 1991. More quietly, he has built an impressive body of short fiction, essays, articles, and speeches. Relativity is his first collection of these. Read the stories collected, and you'll... ...become a modern day killer who walks with dinosaurs in "Just Like Old Times."
...experience first contact with an alien race, with all that implies in "Ineluctable."
...fly on board a space ship in "The Shoulders of Giants." And enjoy five more flights of the imagination in "Immortality," "The Stanley Cup Caper," "Star Light, Star Bright," "The Hand You're Dealt" and the title story, "Relativity." This collection also gives you a chance to read a selection of Sawyer's speeches, including his acceptance of the prestigious Hugo Award for his novel Hominids in 2003.

The award-winning Sawyer, whose novels (17 of them) are marketed as ‘hard science fiction’ in the U.S. but which often reach the mainstream bestseller lists in his native Canada, writes stories notable for realistic depictions of scientists.
Although his earlier work (the Quintaglio Ascension trilogy) might be a hard sell as lab lit (its protagonists are sentient dinosaurs!), Sawyer’s more recent, near-future, hard SF novels ( Calculating God Factoring Humanity Hominids and Frameshift – the sources, respectively, of the above-named practitioners), feature cutting-edge science, big ideas, and scientists with human foibles.

    Robert J. Sawyer's "Rollback"
Science fiction writer Robert J. Sawyer , winner of Best Novel Hugo and Nebula Awards , has a brand new novel Rollback in bookstores this week.
Here the author offers some casting ideas for a film adaptation of the novel:
Rollback is a novel about rejuvenation, and so contains an interesting casting challenge. At the beginning of the book, the main character, Don Halifax, is 87 years old, but as the story progresses he ends up having his body rolled back to the way it was when he was just 25.
An elderly man, no matter how skilled an actor, can't move with the vigor and grace of a young person, so you can't have a senior citizen play both parts. And having different actors play young and old Don reminds me too much of the 1970s series The Incredible Hulk , in which Bill Bixby played Dr. Banner and Lou Ferrigno played the alter-ego: it was impossible for me to suspend disbelief and think of them as the same person.
No, let's go with a young actor and use makeup and appliances to make him look old in the early scenes. My choice would be

There has been a lot of discussion and, quite frankly, more than a little whining, about atheists being rude, arrogant, and condescending. A significant problem with these complaints is the presence of a consistent double standard: those making the accusations don't apply the same standards or expectations to religious believers or, sometimes, even themselves. In the former cases it may be that the religious rhetoric has become so familiar that no one pays close enough attention to recognize that it's no less arrogant, rude, or condescending than what atheists say — but while the average person may be forgiven for not noticing this, commentators and pundits who are presuming to providing a careful analysis have no such excuse. In the latter cases, where the person complaining doesn't hold themselves to the same standards they are applying to others, it may be an example of arrogance being in the eye of the beholder. When they say something that might be perceived as arrogant or condescending, it's the fault of the listener because the speaker is merely pointing out obvious and unassailable facts. When others say something perceived as arrogant or condescending, it's all their fault for not taking others' feelings into account.
