Author Tour Stop - Robert J. Sawyer - ROLLBACK
Introducing the next author on the Author Tour Stop the author tour that comes to you out of the cosmic aether once upon a purple moon and a harvest sun, when the shadow of the grinning groundhog is cast upon an ancient obelisk somewhere in the Andes and the constellation of the Archer aims its fiery arrow upon your heart....
Prolific and exciting science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer , called "the dean of Canadian science fiction" by The Ottawa Citizen among other things, has won so many awards that I'd run out of disk space were I to list them all; awards that include the Nebula for his novel The Terminal Experiment , the Hugo for Hominids , and the Campbell , which he won in 2006 for his novel Mindscan . I'd better stop here, but you can see more for yourself. In addition, Rob's books can usually be found on various bestseller lists, and Rob gets frequently interviewed on TV and other media.
Now, awards are great high-profile things, and so is bestsellerdom, but here, that's not the point. The point is that Rob's work genuinely works on a number of levels and touches his readers . He has a masterful ability of picking universal philosophical themes and exploring them in a way that sucks you in and makes you think beyond the limits of what is considered real in our present day one of the best definitions, in my opinion, of true science fiction. His style is neither literary nor pretentious, but it cuts through and presents a clear and true

Sawyer, Robert J. Hybrids. New York: Tor, 2004. 396pp.
This is the third installment in Sawyer's Neanderthal Parallax trilogy and it brings everything to a nice conclusion. The overall plot of the trilogy revolves around a portal (in Sudbury, Ontario, of all places) between our earth and a parallel reality where neanderthals have evolved as the dominante humanoid species. The main characters are scientists from the two worlds, Ponter Boddit and Mary Vaughn (of York University!) and their relationship, eventually their falling in love and wanting to have a child. Thus the title of this volume, Hybrids . As the novel progresses we see the struggles that Mary and Ponter must undergo, both personal and scientific, to realize their dream. We also continue to see Sawyer use the contrasts between the two worlds, on violent and one peaceful, to make some interesting commentary on our world, for both good and bad.

Review: Rollback by Robert J. Sawyer
Today, in January Magazine ’s SF/F section, Andi Shechter reviews Rollback by Robert J. Sawyer. Says Shechter:
Rollback is a dynamite science fiction novel that examines some major themes great and small .... I’ve read some trilogies, of course, and I’m a big fan of series books in the mystery genre. But sometimes, I just want to read a book that tells a story; a single story that ends when it should end. Don’t you?
In Rollback we get the big story communications with aliens and a smaller one life extension. Neither is a simple idea; yet the more complicated one is that of life extension. Both are told cleanly, intelligently and woven together well.

Robert J. Sawyer is, according to MacLean's: Canada's Weekly Newsmagazine, "among the most successful Canadian authors ever." Hominids is the first volume of a trilogy.
Robert J. Sawyer The Terminal Experiment won the 1995 Nebula award. Sawyer was briefly president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America , and is regularly interviewed as a pundit by Canadian television. His novel Hominids is the first volume of the Neanderthal Parallax trilogy. A technician is working in a Neutrino Observatory deep beneath Northern Canada, when an alarm sounds, and the container holding a vast quantity of heavy water bursts open, revealing a Neanderthal inside. In our world, a traumatized Ponter is taken to a hospital, while DNA from his swabs is examined by geneticist Mary Vaughan, an expert on Neanderthals. Mary is attempting to come to terms with being raped, and initially studies Ponter as a distraction, but is soon captivated by his intelligence, even as she is terrified by his masculinity.

Description:
Robert J Sawyer - The Terminal Experiment - Unb - Requested
The Terminal Experiment has propelled Robert J. Sawyer into the limelight as one of science fiction's hot new writers, earning him the prestigious Nebula Award in the process. In this fast-paced thriller, Dr. Peter Hobson's investigations into death and afterlife lead him to create three separate electronic versions of himself: one has no memory of physical existence and represents life after death; one has no knowledge of death or aging and represents immortality; and the third is left unaltered as a control. But all three have escaped into the worldwide matrix...and one of them is a killer.

Robert J. Sawyer and his new book ROLLBACK
By Minister Faust
Anyb ody over the age of 25 knows the terror of the following five words: “You’re not getting any younger.” Some have even heard the horror in the warning: “Past 30, you lose one thing a year,” where “thing” means bodily efficiency, process, or, heaven forbid, part. What’s there to lose? Quick metabolism. Sex drive. Endless energy and quick recuperation. Hair where you want it, and lack of hair where you don’t. Muscle power. Skin tone. Lack of sag. Pain-free exertion. Pain-free rest. Vision. Hearing. Taste. Bowel and bladder control. Kidney, liver and heart function. Memory. And, finally, life. But what if you could get it all back , roll it all back to age 25 of peak performance, plus the benefit of your years of knowledge and wisdom (youth is wasted on the young, and wisdom on the old)? And all it would cost would be a fo rtune... and your natural connection to everyone you’ve ever known?

orn between two worlds, geneticist Mary Vaughan and Neanderthal physicist Ponter Boddit struggle to find a way to make their relationship work. Aided by banned Neanderthal technology, they plan to conceive the first hybrid child, a symbol of hope for the peaceful coexistence of the two versions of reality. But after an experiment shows that Mary''s religious faith-something completely absent in Neanderthals-is a quirk of Homo sapiens neurology, Ponter and Mary must decide whether their child should be predisposed to atheism or belief. Meanwhile, as Mary''s Earth faces the impending collapse of its planetary magnetic field, Mary''s boss, the enigmatic Jock Krieger, has turned envious eyes on the unspoiled Eden of the Neanderthal world. In Hybrids, Sawyer concludes his signature speculations about alternative ways to be human, exploding our preconceptions of morality and gender, of faith and love.

8 September 2003 S Illegal Alien a current hit in Japanese translation, but long out of print in North America. Finally, Sawyer was presented with the coveted Best Novel Hugo Award for Hominids the first book in his trilogy about an alternate Earth where Neanderthals, not Homo sapiens, run the world. Flushed with victory, Sawyer credited science fiction fandom with giving him his career, his best friends, his wife (SF poet Carolyn Clink) and now the Hugo what he called the greatest honour of his life. Sawyer joins a group of only 16 SF authors, including Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Frank Herbert, who have won both the Hugo and the Nebula Award for best novel (and who knows who among those 16 have ever won a Seiun). Later on that night Sawyer could be found leading a sake toast at the room party for a Tokyo WorldCon in 2007. Back to Saturday afternoon, however: Robert J. Sawyer, fresh from collecting an Aurora for his short story "Ineluctable," was sitting down with me and my shoebox tape recorder for a longish chat about his world-famous interest in the future. As a futurist, Sawyer has written scores of essays, made over 150 television appearances, and served on government panels. Unlike many in his field (or outside of it), Sawyer believes the future will after some rough patches end up wonderfully for the human race.
