Which of your characters is your favorite? Ponter Boddit. He's a modern-day Neanderthal quantum-computing specialist in my Neanderthal Parallax trilogy. I never start with a character; I'm a thematic writer, and I start by figuring out what I want to say on a high level, then construct the characters that let me get at that. Well, in Hominids Humans , and Hybrids the three books of the trilogy I wanted to demonstrate two things: that being powerfully male wasn't at odds with being a pacifist, and being an atheist wasn't at odds with being moral. Ponter embodies both of those things; he's the kind of friend I think most people would like to have. 2. Tell me about your travels.

A Hard Science Fiction Writer Worth Reading
If you like science fiction that is believable, entertaining, and thought provoking all at the same time - then check out the works of Robert J Sawyer! His books are filled with good characters, well-devoloped theories, and engaging plotlines.
I discovered the fiction of Robert J Sawyer while browsing the bookshelves of my local bookstore. Hopefully, you can benefit from my "luck" (I just picked one of his books out on a whim).
Three reasons I like Robert J Sawyer
His fiction is believable.
The theories that he explores in his work are interesting and engaging.
He writes a lot of non-fiction in books, newspapers, and essays that make my mind take notice.

The article Privacy: Who Needs It? by Robert J. Sawyer said There's a long-standing problem in astronomy called the Fermi Paradox, named for physicist Enrico Fermi who first proposed it in 1950. If the universe should be teeming with life, asked Fermi, then where are all the aliens? The question is even more vexing today: SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence with radio telescopes, has utterly failed to turn up any sign of alien life forms. Why?
One chillingly likely possibility is that, as the ability to wreak damage on a grand scale becomes more readily available to individuals, soon enough just one malcontent, or one lunatic, will be able to destroy an entire world. Perhaps countless alien civilizations have already been wiped out by single terrorists who'd been left alone to work unmonitored in their private laboratories. Robert J. Sawyer is a Canadian science fiction writer, dubbed "the dean of Canadian science fiction" by the Ottawa Citizen in 1999. He is a hard science-fiction writer, but he is more concerned with characterization and human psychology than many other practitioners of this subgenre.
In 2003, Rob consulted with the Canadian Federal Government's Department of Justice to discuss what Canadian law should be in relation to biotechnology, stem-cell research, cloning, and the privacy of personal genetic information. In 2001, he and

From this premise, Sawyer takes us skimming across a sea of implications. Can you cede your rights to a simulated version of yourself? How does our mortality affect our actions? Who would choose this kind of procedure and why? How would people react to this emerging technology? And what would it be like for a person to leave their body for something far less vulnerable, still carrying the memories of how food tastes, the wind feels, a rose smells?
Everything that affects our feelings, at least in our biological instantiation

Canadians for the Campbell
There are two awards named for John W. Campbell, Jr. (pictured above), the great editor of Astounding Stories . One is the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Novel of the Year , and it is the principal juried award in the SF field; I was fortunate enough to win it two years ago for my Mindscan
The other is the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer ; it's given alongside the Hugos at the World Science Ficton Convention. This year, there are four Canadians eligible for the award:
Stephen Kotowych

Tony Pi

Jerome Steuart

Sarah Totton

I point out (cough, cough) that I have personally mentored three of them: Stephen came to see me when I was writer-in-residence at the Toronto Public Library's Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy; Tony was my writing student at the University of Toronto; and Sarah came to see me when I was writer-in-residence at the Richmond Hill Public Library. Jerome moved to Canada in October 2007.

The Future
Robert J. Sawyer On The Future
Interviewed by Katia Menegon 10.15.07, 6:00 PM ET
What's one thing you were sure would happen, but didn't? What's something that totally surprised you? I'll note gently that your questions are loaded, in that they ask for two examples of failures, and none of successes. Your first question"What's one thing you were sure would happen, but didn't?"seeks a sin of commission, a prediction that turned out to be wrong. And your second question"What's something that happened and totally surprised you?"seeks a sin of omission. But, anyway, for me the answer to both is essentially the same: Like so many science-fiction writers and futurists, I predicted a rational 21st century, a new millennium in which old superstitions and fundamentalist religion would have faded into the backgroundand so I was shocked by the rise to the heights of power of the religious right in the U.S. (even though I did predict fraud using electronic voting machines in my first novel, 1990's Golden Fleece It's a mistake many futurists have made. We assume the rest of humanity is like us: forward-thinking, rational and enamored of science.

The Neanderthal Parallax is your first trilogy since the Quintaglio trilogy, which wasn't conceived as a trilogy. How are did your approaches to the two series differ?
It's very much a question of scale. In the first volume of the Quintaglio trilogy, I covered an enormous amount of material, some of it in only cursory detail, because I didn't know that I was ever going to revisit that world. In the first volume of The Neanderthal Parallax , all of the action takes place over just a few days, and I concentrated on a few aspects of the culture, instead of trying to sketch it all. Specifically, Hominids gives us a good look at the Neanderthal legal system, but not so much about their economics or politics. I knew I could leave those for subsequent volumes, although of course I had to work them all out before I began writing even the first book.
