    John Ralston Saul
John Ralston Saul was born in Ottawa on June 19, 1947. The son of an officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, he grew up on a number of different military bases accross the country. He attended McGill University in the late 1960s, receiving an Honours B.A. in Political Science in 1969, and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Economics and Political Science from King's College, University of London in 1972. It was Saul's research for his doctoral thesis on the French Government under Charles de Gaulle that led him to move to Paris in the early 1970s. After completing his PhD he stayed on in Paris, running a subsidiary of a British investment firm and beginning work on his first novel. Saul returned to Canada in 1975 and was able to complete his book published first in France as Mort d'un Général (1977) and then in Canada as Birds of Prey (1977) while working in Calgary for Petro-Canada as the assistant to Maurice Strong, the firm's founder. Leaving Calgary and Petro-Canada in 1978, he went on to hold a number of other positions, including that of Secretary for the Canada-Chinese Trade Council. John Ralston Saul has also played an active role in a number of non-profit organizations, including the Canadian chapter of PEN International, for which he has served at various times as its Secretary, Vice-President, and President. He currently lives in Toronto.

"A lot of the fans like it [ Suffer the Children ] best. I think because it was the most violent thing I ever wrote. I sort of toned down the violence after that.... I thought that if kids that young were going to be reading me I was going to tone down the gore. I didn't really like writing all the gore anyway. So that was probably the most violent thing I've ever done, which I suspect is why [it's sold so well] because the public seems to have this unending thirst for the violence that I was unwilling to keep serving up.
John Saul is camping when I catch up with him. Though, to be honest, camping doesn't quite describe it. More accurately, he's on a book tour, driving around in his own rock-star-appropriate bus, complete with leather furnishings and glass shower enclosure. He's not exactly roughing it. "This," the 57-year-old writer says, indicating the palatial mobile accommodations that surround us, "is as close as you can get to a private rail car these days." I am left with the distinct impression that, if such conveyances were still available, Saul would be near the front of the line to get one.

      • [T]he ideal of the rugged individual opening up the American West is still applied as an essential truth to ten million citizens living in the small area of New York City, as if ten million bulls should and could be squeezed into a china shop. Just as the unleashing of ideas and myths in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries cleared the way for endless changes in state and social structures, so the subsequent pinning down and splitting up of language into feudal states has now made it impossible for the citizen to participate seriously in society. The inviting humanist irony of the early days has given way to the off-putting rational cynicism and sloganeering of our time. Elites quite naturally define as the most important and admired qualities for a citizen those on which they themselves have concentrated. We talk endlessly of the individual and of individualism, for example, when any sensible glance at major issues indicates that we live in an era of great conformism. Our societies turn upon democratic principles, yet the quasi totality of our leading citizens refuse to take part in that process and, instead, leave the exercise of political power to those for whom they have contempt. Our business leaders hector us in the name of capitalism, when most of them are no more than corporate employees, isolated from personal risk.

(Excerpt) THE RIGHT HAND OF EVIL John Saul BIO John Saul's first novel, SUFFER THE CHILDREN, published in 1977, was an immediate million-copy bestseller. He has since written nineteen successive bestselling novels of suspense, including THE PRESENCE, BLACK LIGHTNING, GUARDIAN, and THE HOMING. He is also the author of the New York Times bestselling serial thriller THE BLACKSTONE CHRONICLES, initially published in six installments, but now available in one complete volume. Mr. Saul divides his time between Seattle, Washington, and Maui, Hawaii. PAST INTERVIEW July 30, 1999 Thrillers might be John Saul's specialty when it comes to writing, but don't ask him to go see a horror movie - he'd rather see something a little less scary...like A Bug's Life! The master of supernatural and psychological horror novels admits to his fear of everything horror, including his fear of his own books. TBR's Mary Ellen Gustafson, a die-hard fan, interviewed John Saul and asked him about his new book, THE RIGHT HAND OF EVIL, and also found out some very intriguing details about his fear of horror, his book preferences, who he would cast if one of his books became a movie. Don't miss finding out who the real John Saul is in this very telling and very un-scary interview.

    A Conversation With John Saul
By Claire E. White If there's one quality that New York Times bestselling author John Saul has in abundance (other than talent, of course) it's tenacity. After attending several colleges-Antioch, in Ohio, Cerritos, in Norwalk, California, Montana State University and San Francisco State Collegevariously majoring in anthropology, liberal arts, and theater, he dropped out of school to become a writer. He then spent fifteen long years working in various jobs in the car-rental industry and taking on typing assignments while attempting to write a book someone would want to publish. Those years garnered him a nice collection of unpublished manuscripts, but not a lot of money. Eventually he found an agent in New York, who spent several years sending his manuscripts around, and trying to make the rejection slips sound hopeful. Then, in 1976, one of his manuscripts reached Dell, who didn't want to buy it, but asked if he'd be interested in writing a psychological thriller. He put together an outline, and crossed his fingers. His agent decided the outline had all the makings of a bestseller, and so did Dell. Gambling on a first novel by an unknown author, in 1977 Dell backed the book with television advertising (one of the first times a paperback original was promoted on television) and the gamble paid off. Within a month
