Siegfried Sassoon
Siegfried Sassoon is buried in St Andrew's Churchyard, Mells, Somerset, England. (See map...ref. no 10) During his first spell at the front line Sassoon was awarded the Military Cross for bravery - a medal which he later threw away. However, by 1917 he had become an outspoken opponent of the war. His Declaration of Wilful Defiance nearly resulted in a court-martial but Robert Graves intervened on his behalf and he was admitted instead to Craiglockhart War Hospital, Edinburgh suffering from 'shell-shock'. It was here that he met Wilfred Owen and encouraged him to write poetry. On returning to the trenches, he further proved his bravery by crawling within 50 yards of enemy machine-guns to hurl grenades, but while making his way back to his own lines he was mistaken for a German and shot; the bullet grazing his skull.

Sassoon, Siegfried (Lorraine) P oet, novelist. Born September 8, 1886 in Brenchley, Kent. Sassoon spent his childhood at the family home in Weirleigh, in the protected and somewhat rarefied atmosphere of a family near the center of the late Victorian and Edwardian literary and artistic world. He was formally educated at Marlborough School and at Clare College, Cambridge, and began publishing poems privately in 1906. However, Sassoon's distinctive voice was not heard until the publication of his war poemsin The Old Huntsman (1917) and Counter-attack (1918). He was the first of the younger Georgian poets to react violently against sentimentally patriotic notions of the glories of war; these poems have an extraordinary vigora stridency of tone, in factexpressing with unconcealed irony and in colloquial terms a passionate hatred of the horrors of war. Some of Sassoon's contemporaries produced poems that addressed more seriously the confusion of values that World War I revealed; but none responded with such passion or with such hatred of the ignorance and folly that permitted such pain. Sassoon's poems of the 1920srepresented in Satirical Poems (1926 and 1933) and in The Road to Ruin (1933although they set out to satirize the corruptions and the pretensions of a disintegrating and confused materialistic society, were more controlled, artificial, less intenseand vastly less effective than the war poems.

Siegfried Sassoon on Alcuin
The following poem by Siegfried Sassoon is particularly memorable to me [EFR] for it was read at my friend Donald Bullough's funeral in 2002. Donald was a leading expert on Alcuin as was reported in his obituary which appeared in the Scotsman:- Nothing typified Bullough's total dedication to research more than his study of the life of the th-century ecclesiastic Alcuin of York, who was Charlemagne's tutor. Bullough had already published The Age of Charlemagne in - a well received book which was translated into German and French immediately. This fascination with Alcuin led him into further - and ever more detailed - research both in Britain and in Europe. Bullough revised and added to the manuscript over a period of 30 years and when his cancer was diagnosed at the end of last year, he sent it to the publishers. He lived to read and agree the final proof and his biography "Alcuin: Achievement and Reputation" will be coming out later this year. In fact Donald A Bullough, Alcuin: Achievement and Reputation was published by Brill on 30 December 2002.

  • Siegfried Sassoon 1886–1967
(Full name Siegfried Lorraine Sassoon; also wrote under the pseudonyms Saul Kain, Pinchbeck Lyre, and S. S.) English poet, novelist, autobiographer, and editor.
    INTRODUCTION
Sassoon was one of several English poets, including Robert Graves, Edmund Blunden, and Wilfred Owen, who gained recognition by writing about their experiences as soldiers in World War I, Using realistic detail and bitter satire, Sassoon's war poetry expresses the suffering of the battlefield and rails against the traditional, idealistic image of combat as a glorious and noble undertaking. Other poems by Sassoon consider subjects apart from warfare, frequently utilizing rural English settings as a means of contemplating man's spirituality and existence. It is his powerful reaction to the violence of the modern battlefield that distinguishes Sassoon as a poet, however, and his experiences in the First World War are also central to the well-received novels and autobiographies he later produced.
    Biographical Information
Sassoon was born to a wealthy family. His father was Jewish, with relations who were prominent in English society, politics, and business; his mother, a gentile, also hailed from an affluent background. Sassoon grew up on a country estate in Kent, enjoying fox hunting, cricket, and other pastimes of the well-to-do. He studied law and history at Marlborough College and Clare College, Cambridge, but never took a degree. While a student, he began to write poetry, and he published a number of private editions of his verse prior to the beginning of World War I. Sassoon enlisted in the British army in August 1914, three days before England declared war on the Central Powers. After training as an infantry officer, he arrived in France in November 1915 and took part in fighting on the Western Front.

page: The grueling, seemingly endless years of World War I brought a quick education in devastation and futility to hundreds of thousands of young British men, including those who grew up in privilege. One of these was the gay "war poet," Siegfried Sassoon. Brought up in the leisured life of a country gentleman, Sassoon enlisted in the military just as the war was beginning. His poetry reflects the evolution of his attitudes towards war, beginning with a vision of combat as an exploit reflecting glory and nobility, and ending with muddy, bloody realism and bitter recrimination towards those who profited from the destruction of young soldiers. Sponsor Message.
Sassoon came of age during a sort of golden period of Western homosexual intelligentsia, and his friends and lovers were some of the best-known writers, artists, and thinkers of the period. Born on September 8, 1886 in Weirleigh, England, in the county of Kent, Siegfried Louvain (some give his middle name as Loraine, or Lorraine) Sassoon was the son of a Sephardic Jewish father and a Catholic mother. His parents divorced when young Siegfried was five, and his father died of tuberculosis within a few years. While still a teenager, Sassoon experienced his first crush on another boy, a fellow student at his grammar school.

    You worship decorations; you believe

You make us shells. You listen with delight,

You crown our distant ardours while we fight, And mourn our laurelled memories when we're killed. You can't believe that British troops "retire" When hell's last horror breaks them, and they run, Trampling the terrible corpses - blind with blood. Memory (Limerick, 1 February 1918) When I was young my heart and head were light, And I was gay and feckless as a colt Out in the fields, with morning in the may, Wind on the grass, wings in the orchard bloom. O thrilling sweet, my joy, when life was free And all the paths led on from hawthorn-time Across the carolling meadows into June. But now my heart is heavy-laden. I sit

Re-Reading Siegfried Sassoon: Everybody Sang, by Petra Kuppers
‘Everybody Sang’ is Sassoon’s most famous poem, and according to some critics, supposedly written in celebration of Armistice Day, 1919, just before he found out that his friend Wilfred Owen had died in the last week of fighting. Sassoon had been treated for shell shock and war neurosis in one of the UK’s most experimental war trauma facilities, the psychiatric unit at Craiglockhart, and had sustained physical wounds during his time at the Western Front. In his autobiography, Siegfried’s Journey, Sassoon gives an account of the writing of this poem: Later on, Sassoon talked about the poem as ‘an expression of release’. Even later, he also likened ‘the singing that will never be done’ to the coming of the Socialist Revolution. So, to many people, this is a poem of peace rather than war. But when I follow its song, I hear a remembering rather than a look into a future, ‘with no sense of elation,’ yet I read a poem still alive and powerful to many today.
