William Saroyan (1908-1981) American author whose stories celebrated optimism in the middle of trials and difficulties of the Depression-era. Several of Saroyan's works were drawn from his own experiences, although his approach to autobiographical facts can be called poetic. His advice to a young writer was: "Try to learn to breathe deeply; really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell." Saroyan worked tirelessly to perfect a prose style, that was full of zest of for life and was seemingly impressionistic. The style became known as 'Saroyanesque.' William Saroyan was born in Fresno, California, as the son of an Armenian immigrant. His father moved to New Jersey in 1905 - he was a small vineyard owner, who had been educated as a Presbyterian minister. In the new country he was forced to take farm-labouring work. He died in 1911 from peritonitis, after drinking a forbidden glass of water given by his wife, Takoohi. Saroyan was put in an orphanage in Alameda with his brothers. Six years later the family reunited in Fresno, where Takoohi had obtained work in a cannery. In 1921 Saroyan attended the Technical School in order to learn to type. At the age of fifteen, Saroyan left the school. His mother had showed him some of his fathers writings, and he decided to become a writer. Saroyan continued his education by reading and writing on his own, and supporting himself by odd jobs. At the San Francisco Telegraph Company he worked as an office manager. A few of his early short articles were published in

Meet the Author
William Saroyan
William Saroyan, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in Fresno, California, in 1908. He left school at age thirteen, but he remained an avid reader. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan's success continued. His novel The Human Comedy was published in 1942 and made into a movie, for which he won an Academy Award in 1943 for the best writing of an original motion picture story. Saroyan became very popular through the 1940s and 1950s; altogether, he published more than 60 books. He died in 1981. In the last book published during his lifetime

htmlAdWH('93212816', '728', '90'); Main Literature William Saroyan William Saroyan was an internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. His fame, and his most enduring achievements as a writer, date from the 1930's. He dazzled, entertained and uplifted millions, with hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, memoirs and essays; they continue to charm and touch us today. Saroyan's talent was first projected to the world through the medium of an Armenian-English newspaper, Hairenik of Boston. In 1934, at the age of 26, with the publication of his first book The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze , William Saroyan became an overnight literary sensation. His first successful Broadway play was My Heart's in the Highlands in 1939, and in the same year, Saroyan was the first American writer to win both the Drama Critic's Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for his play, The Time of Your Life . He refused to accept the Pulitzer Prize on the grounds that, "Commerce should not patronize art...," and he added, "it is no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan is unique among writers. He acknowledged the Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration, especially notable in the book-of-the-month choice

William Stonehill Saroyan Born: August 31, 1908
Place: Fresno, California
Died: May 18, 1981 Place: Fresno, California W illiam Saroyan was born in Fresno, California on August 31, 1908. His parents had both emigrated to the United States from Armenia. When Saroyan was three years old, his father died, and his mother was unable to provide for the four Saroyan children. William and his siblings were placed in an orphanage in Oakland, California. Then, after five years of being raised in an orphanage, the Saroyan children were reunited with their mother, and Mrs. Saroyan was able to re-establish the family in Fresno. W illiam attended school until he was fifteen, when he left high school to try his luck out in the world. He took on odd jobs, and began to write, hoping to get his work published. His work was not an immediate thundering success. Some of his poems and a few short stories did get published, but his genuine breakthrough came when The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze was published in 1934. This is the work that catapulted Saroyan into the spotlight, and really made him an overnight success. From that point on, Saroyan was able to write and be published, and he continued to please his widespread audience. During the course of his life, Saroyan produced more than sixty books. Many of his works were based on autobiographical themes; others explored the world of Armenian immigrants, and the themes of freedom, brotherly love, and hope and poverty during the Great Depression.

The initial signatories to the Articles of Incorporation and subsequent officers and directors were William Saroyan, his bother Henry Saroyan and sister, Cosette Saroyan. Their first order of business was the following resolution: “By unanimous vote, [the] Deed of Trust was accepted from William Saroyan of a manuscript of ‘The Time of Your Life’ and of sixteen short stories, to be made available for literary and educational use by the public.” Thus was the beginning of 4 decades of Foundation activities.
