Carl Sandburg's poem, "Fog," is among the few exceptions that mark Sandburg's break from free verse poetry. Fog", a mere six lines long, is written in verse-form and is an innocent expression of finding beauty in an ordinary world.
The poem begins with the simple line, The fog comes / on little cat feet. The narrator is comparing the movement of the fog to the silent, spry footsteps of a cat, an animal who is able to creep toward its destination without warning. Fog often arrives quickly, yet completely, as it covers a city or a harbor. Akin to a cat who does as it pleases, fog obeys no rules,
often shrouding the surroundings like a blanket that does not allow any light. The cat is the ultimate stealth machine in the warm-blooded animal world, moving silently through its world much as the fog does through its.

The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Carl Sandburg (1878-1967)
Index A friend once said, "Trying to write briefly about Carl Sandburg is like trying to picture the Grand Canyon in one black-and-white snapshot." Poet, historian, biographer, novelist, musician, essayist Sandburg, son of a railroad blacksmith, was all of these and more. A journalist by profession, he wrote a massive biography of Abraham Lincoln that is one of the classic works of the 20th century. To many, Sandburg was a latter-day Walt Whitman , writing expansive, evocative urban and patriotic poems and simple, childlike rhymes and ballads. He traveled about reciting and recording his poetry, in a lilting, mellifluously toned voice that was a kind of singing. At heart he was totally unassuming, notwithstanding his national fame. What he wanted from life, he once said, was "to be out of jail...to eat regular...to get what I write printed,...a little love at home and a little nice affection hither and yon over the American landscape,...(and) to sing every day." A fine example of his themes and his Whitmanesque style is the poem "Chicago" (1914): Hog Butcher for the World

Another voice and performance 'Recovering Carl Sandburg'
In recovering Sandburg as poet, we also recover ideals of American history forgotten or laid aside, both those famous folks and in the neglected people. That is why Sandburg wrote — so that American people and history would not be forgotten; so that he would inspire the people to make history happen.

A few points to consider regarding the instructional design of a sky poetry unit:
    • The sky's the limit, but one need not limit the study of sky poetry to the sky-related poems of Carl Sandburg! The Sandburg Center for Sky Awareness (SCSA) Web site is replete with examples of sky-related quotes from numerous authors and scientists (see sidebar on most SCSA Web pages, or Other Sky Poetry Web page).
    • One need not visit a planetarium to implement a successful sky poetry unitfor inspiration, simply go outside and look up at the real sky! Rather than night sky phenomena, focus on day sky phenomena, e.g., the Sun/Moon (yes, the Moon does appear in the day sky!), twilight planets sky color and optical phenomena (red sunrises/sunsets, rainbows, sundogs, haloes, etc.), clouds nephelococcygia and precipitation (rain, snow , etc.). Visit the For Spacious Skies Web site for ideas and inspiration.
    • Working with the real sky may require more spontaneitythe "teachable moment" is weather-driven! Develop the lessons; make photocopies and put them on the shelf until the perfect day arrives. This type of teaching/learning is often more memorable than linear instruction.

    Connemara: The Carl Sandburg Home
When Carl Sandburg first came to the mountains of Western North Carolina in 1945 and stood on the porch of the main house at Connemara (112k) The Sandburg years at Connemara were productive ones for the man of letters. Among other things, in 1948 he published his only novel, Remembrance Rock , which traced the American epic from Plymouth Rock to World War II. In 1953 his autobiography, Always the Young Strangers , was published. This book centered on his youth in the small town of Galesburg, Ill. Add to that several volumes of history and poetry, including Complete Poems , which won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1951, and one can see that Sandburg remained a prolific writer in his last years. Life at Connemara was busy, too, for the other family members. Mrs. Sandburg (66k) continued to breed and care for her large, prize-winning, goat herd, which numbered 200 at one time, and she ran the farm business, leaving her husband free to write. Margaret helped her father, tended the library, painted, and worked in her flower garden. Janet helped care for the farm (185k) which was especially active during the years of Helga's residence and also included a large vegetable garden, an orchard, cows, chickens, hogs, and cheese and butter making. Grandchildren played endlessly in woods and pastures and rode horses. It was an idyllic but busy life for an active family, and together they enjoyed Connemara for 22 years.

A trip to the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in North Carolina is a chance to sample the idyllic life led by this poet, author, lecturer, minstrel, political activist, and social thinker. Visitors can stroll about the farm as Sandburg did to refresh himself while writing. In the barn area one finds a small herd of goats and, in the summer, park rangers demonstrating cheese-making. Sandburg's wife and daughters made cheese, yogurt, and ice cream from goats' milk.

Rangers also lead poetry and music programs, reminiscent of evenings on the farm when Sandburg would read to or sing with his family after dinner, before heading upstairs to his office where he often worked until morning.
