WILL-TV Production Celebrates Carl Sandburg’s Life, Poetry and the Music
They Inspired Although opera singer Jerry Hadley grew up in Illinois nearly 75 years after Carl Sandburg, Hadley has always felt a bond with the poet because of their shared roots in the Midwest.
"The spirit of the land and the attitudes of the people I grew up with weren’t much different from those of Sandburg’s time," said Hadley.
Hadley stars in WILL-TV’s new performance documentary The Song and the Slogan , a tribute to Sandburg incorporating a musical adaptation of Sandburg’s poem "Prairie." The program, distributed by NETA, looks at Sandburg’s life and explores the prairie as a living entity, constantly changing yet unwilling to be tamed. The program won the 2003 Emmy Award for best music from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America Chapter.
Hadley commissioned the documentary’s original music, an extended chamber work with voice, also titled "The Song and the Slogan." Composed by Midwest native Daniel Steven Crafts, the musical work premiered at the University of Illinois Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, on Nov. 14, 2000.

Poet Writer
Carl Sandburg was a great voice of the American industrial age, a "people's poet" who combined the mystical patriotism of Walt Whitman with the social activism of Woody Guthrie. Sandburg's special topic was the bustle and spirit of midwestern and urban America; his most famous poem, Chicago , begins: "Hog Butcher for the World / Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat / Player with Railroads and the Nation's Freight Handler / Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders." Sandburg's volumes of poetry include Chicago Poems Smoke and Steel Good Morning, America (1928) and The People, Yes (1936). Sandburg is nearly as well known for his colossal six-volume biography of Abraham Lincoln The Prarie Years (two volumes, 1926) and The War Years (four volumes, 1940) which still is considered the definitive biography of the president. In addition to all that, Sandburg wrote for the Chicago Daily News and often travelled around the country, singing and collecting folk songs and reciting poetry. He published a collection of 280 folk tunes

    by Charles Rounds
Among the newer and younger western poets, Carl Sandburg has attracted much attention. His verse has virility, force, clarity, and music. The poem here given won a prize of two hundred dollars offered under the auspices of "Poetry," a magazine published in Chicago. It illustrates all the qualities mentioned above. His present home is in Maywood, Illinois, but he lived for some years in Milwaukee, and married a Milwaukee girl , Lillian Steichen. He was connected with the Milwaukee Leader, and was secretary to Mayor Seidel. His political ideas are frequently reflected in his poems.

I became interested in his poetry in grade school after I discovered that my great-Aunt Emma was married to Charlie Krans, Carl Sandburg’s first cousin. My mother had in our family archives an old issue of LIFE magazine that had a story documenting a Sandburg visit to Galesburg. Wonderful photographs of Sandburg visiting my great aunt and uncle’s farm and enjoying the fellowship of their company accompanied the story. “Wow”, I thought, “My great aunt and uncle knew Carl Sandburg, a world famous poet. Cool!” Later on I as developed as a jazz musician I stumbled upon a Sandburg poem entitled Jazz Fantasia. His words, to me, captured the spiritual essence of the jazz musician. This solidified my notions that Carl was indeed a serious hipster. A song I composed based on a section of The People, Yes

Turn right onto Little River Road at the brown Sandburg Home sign, go approximately 100 yards, turn left into the parking area of the Carl Sandburg Home. Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site - Carl Sandburg, American poet, historian, author, and lecturer spent the final 22 years of his long and productive life at his estate, Connemara, in Flat Rock, NC. Today this National Historic Site offers a keen insight on Mr. Sandburg, his family and their 240 acre working farm. The Sandburg Home was built in 1838 and now houses his collection of 10,000 books, notes and papers. The home offers daily tours and is closed only on Christmas Day. There are numerous hiking trails and a functional goat barn, where Mrs. Sandburg raised her prize winning goats. Walk to the park's information station below the parking lot, cross the bridge and walk up the hill to the main house. The trail ascends 100 feet, the height of a 10-story building, a moderate climb. If you are unable to walk to the house, use the phone at the information station to call for assistance (during summer season).

    Sandburg meets Flickr
I was looking at Flickr today as was intrigued by the quotes (the one I saw was from Mark Twain) with words that had been hyperlinked to various Flickr tags to represent the content of the quote. Cool idea, as I am always looking for ways to use Flickr for an instructional purpose. Being from Chicago, I took my favorite poem from Carl Sandburg and used the same technique to first hyperlink tags to the words of the poem, and in the second case, link actual photos from Flickr.
