Carl Sandburg - Bio
Illinois Poet Laureate 1962-1967 Returning to Galesburg, Sandburg tried his hand at house painting, before enlisting in Company C of the Sixth Infantry Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers for service in the Spanish-American War. He was assigned to duty in Puerto Rico from July until late August 1898, serving as a correspondent for the Galesburg Evening Mail, his first newspaper affiliation. In October 1898, although he lacked a high school diploma, Sandburg's status as a war veteran qualified him for admission with free tuition to Lombard College in his hometown. Sandburg began writing poems so original in character and so rough in form that he wondered if these works were indeed poetry. His big break came when Harriet Monroe, founder and editor of the influential Chicago journal Poetry: A Magazine of Verse Daily News Poetry , wrote letters of advice and encouragement to Sandburg. As Canadian indie label Arts and Crafts continues to churn out entertaining and talented acts, I become more and more impressed with the rock sensibilities of our neighbors to the north. In his sophomore release, Jason Collett hones his penchant for unique folk-pop anthems and delivers them coated in catchy guitar riffs and choral crescendos. While his debut Idols of Exile focused a little more on more charging, rock-ier songs, his newest effort takes the urgency out of his music. He seems most comfortable serving up delicious rolling guitars and Dylanesque vocals, allowing the momentum of the songs to carry the various ditties to their peaks. By letting the tracks take on a life of their own, Collett ends up infusing them with more than he ever purposefully could. Indeed, Collett has returned from exile here to stay. Carl Sandburg's Connemara
Sandburg's Connemara Connemara is a large estate of 245-acres consisting of a 22 room white mansion on a hill, backed by mountains and fronted by green pastures with various lakes, barns and outbuildings. It was sold to the government after his death and is maintained as a National Historic Site by the U.S. Park Service. The hill approaching the house is steep and the climb ascends 100 feet over a third of a mile, but transportation is provided if the walk is too much. When you get to the house, there is a visitors center in the basement. Here you can peruse the bookstore and buy tickets for the tour, which is the only way to explore the house. The home was built by Christopher Memminger in 1838, who was the secretary of the treasury for the Confederacy. The home was next owned by the textile tycoon Ellison Smyth who named it Connemara in honor of his Irish heritage. The Sandburgs bought the estate from Smyth's descendants. Advertisement:

Welcome to Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site
Carl Sandburg, nationally renowned poet, biographer, lecturer, newspaper columnist, folksinger, author of American fairytales, and winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, provided broad and enduring 20th century insight into the circumstances, worth and spirit of the American people. He passionately championed for the everyday working person, those who may neither have had the words nor the power to speak for themselves.
A Midwesterner most of his life, Sandburg and his family moved to North Carolina in 1945. This farm offered the peace and solitude required for his writing and offered Mrs. Sandburg over 30 acres of pasture-land that she desired to raise her champion dairy goats.

Poet
Born in Galesburg, Illinois, of Swedish immigrant parents, Carl Sandburg found beauty in the ordinary language of the people, the "American lingo," as he called it, and used that language to interpret the republic's frontier past and set it in the context of an industrial present. Much of Sandburg's poetry focused on Chicago, and he was a leading figure in the group of writers from this city who formed the literary movement called the Chicago Renaissance. He also won a Pulitzer Prize for his monumental biography, Abraham Lincoln: The War Years Sandburg was a close friend of William Smith and sat for many portrait sketches, as well as this painted likeness, while visiting the artist's home in Pineville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Smith, who had studied in New York City at the Art Students League in the late 1930s, was a well-known illustrator. In the 1960s he undertook a large mural for the state of Maryland, and in 1973 he designed eight stamps related to the American Revolution for the United States Postal Service.
