In the midst of this labyrinth in which we are feeling our way with such difficulty, who does not look back regretfully to the days when life was more simple, when it was possible to walk towards a goal, mysterious and unknown though it might be, by straight paths and royal routes? It is interesting, as a preliminary study, to note the natural gifts, and the first impressions of Aurore Dupin as a child and young girl, and to see how these predetermined the woman and the writer known to us as George Sand. REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Sand, George Sand, George (1804-1876), was the pen name of Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, a French novelist of the 1800's. Her work was admired by the greatest writers of her time. After her death, Sand's writing went out of style, and she was remembered only for her shocking lifestyle and her love affairs with the composer Frederic Chopin and the poet Alfred de Musset. She defied social convention by smoking cigars and wearing men's clothes. Since the emergence of the women's movement in the mid-1900's, Sand's work has been rediscovered, and she has attracted critical attention as a novelist and autobiographer.

    A FEW FRENCH CELEBRITIES.
By Junius Henri Browne Page 833 VICTOR HUGO. We paint life as it should be, indifferent to its truth, provided it be moral. They often seem prurient or indelicate to us. We frequently appear humdrum and tedious to them. They admire us, but wish we would not be so monotonously moral. We are delighted with them, but feel constrained to declare against their absorption by art. The French, notably the Parisians, are undeniably the most artistic people of modern times; and they are so superlatively conscious of the fact that to tell them it would be like carrying olives to Bologna. They are not to be informed of any thing. What they do not know can hardly be worth knowing. They are intimately acquainted with Paris and all it contains. What lies beyond is unworthy of their attention. This sovereign egotism, this assumption of omniscience, is passing on the Seine. Lutetia has at last discovered her mistake, is laboring to correct it, will labor long, and, in the end, effectually. The Flowers of Evil The Forerunners of Socialism Namouna , or The Comedy of Death ; has no definite idea of the productions of Charles Baudelaire

    George Sand (1804-1876)
    Biographical note
Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, later Baroness Dudevant (July 1, 1804 – June 8, 1876) was a French novelist and early feminist (prior to the invention of the word) who wrote under the pen name of George Sand. Born in Paris to a father of aristocratic lineage and a "common" mother, Sand was raised for much of her childhood by her grandmother at the family estate, Nohant, in the French region of Berry, a setting later used in many of her novels. In 1822, she married Baron Casimir Dudevant, and they had two children, Maurice (b. 1823) and Solange (b. 1828). In 1835, taking the children with her, she left her husband. Her first novel, Rose et Blanche (1831) was written in collaboration with Jules Sandeau, from whom she allegedly took her pen name, Sand. After parting from her husband Sand made less and less a secret of preferring men's clothes to women's, although she continued to dress as a woman for social occasions. This male "disguise" enabled Sand to circulate more freely about Paris, and gave her increased access to venues that might have been denied to a woman of her social standing. This was an exceptional practice for the 19th century, where social codes—especially in the upper class—were of the highest importance. As a consequence Sand lost a good deal of the privileges attached to being a Baroness. Ironically, it was also a part of the mores of this period that women of higher classes could live physically separated from their husbands without losing face, if they didn't show any blatant irregularity to the outer world.

G eorge Sand is the pseudonym of Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin Baronet Dudevant T he romantic 19th century French novelist, George Sand, the daughter of a French army officer named Dupin who was descended from King Augustus II of Poland was born Amandine Aurore Lucile Dupin in 1804. (It seems she was an illegitimate daughter of Marshal de Saxe.) S he spent her early childhood with her grandmother at the château of Nohant. She was educated at a convent boarding school (1817-1820) and she returned to Nohant in 1820. In 1821, after both Aurore's father and grandmother had died, she married Casimir Dudevant a country squire, to escape her mother's guardianship. A urore soon found Nohant and married life too constraining for her and so moved out taking her two children with her to Paris. At the time divorce was illegal and so she was only separated from her husband. There she outraged bourgeois society by her unconventional ways; she wore trousers and smoked cigars in public. O H er writings generally are divided into four periods. The novels of the first period (1832-1836) were idealistic and romantic, typical examples being 'Valentine' (1832) and 'Lélia' (1833).They, like Indiana, exalted free love unhampered by conventional marriage. The second period (1840-1848) was devoted to such novels as 'Consuelo' (1842), in which she expounded socialistic and humanitarian ideals.

e have passed over George Sand's intercourse with Liszt and Madame d'Agoult very rapidly. One of Balzac's novels gives us an opportunity of saying a few more words about it. Balzac had been introduced to George Sand by Jules Sandeau. At the time of her rupture with his friend, Balzac had sided entirely with him. In the Lettres a l'Etrangere , we see the author of the Comedie humaine pouring out his indignation with the blue stocking, who was so cruel in her love, in terms which were not extremely elegant. Gradually, and when he knew more about the adventure, his anger cooled down. In March, 1838, he gave Madame Zulma Carraud an account of a visit to Nohant. He found his comrade, George Sand, in her dressing-gown, smoking a cigar by her fireside after dinner. "She had some pretty yellow slippers on, ornamented with fringe, some fancy stockings and red trousers. So much for the moral side. Physically, she had doubled her chin like a canoness. She had not a single white hair, in spite of all her fearful misfortunes; her dusky complexion had not changed. Her beautiful eyes were just as bright, and she looked just as stupid as ever when she was thinking. . . ." This is George Sand in her thirty-fifth year, as she was at the time of the fresh adventure we are about to relate.
