George Sand - behind this name hides one of the famoust authoress of the 19th century. She was born as Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin in Paris on 1st July 1804.
On her father's side she had a titled family tree - her great-great-grandfather was August der Starke (1670-1730) - but George Sand pointed out with a kind of proud that she was attached to the people on her mother's side. The family Dupin was stroken by two blows in 1808, first George Sand's younger brother Auguste died and only one week later her father fell from a horse and died because of the injuries. George lived with her mother in the house of her grandmother in Nohant in the period following but the two women had been so different that they couldn't make an agreement and a living under the same roof was unthinkable. They reached an agreement about the upbringing of George which took on her grandmother.
Her mother moved to Paris with the promise that her daughter will follow later - a promise she never kept. This left behind a deep wound which only healed somewhat briefly before the death of her mother. George Sand was sent to a nunnery by her grandmother for two years for the purpose of learning manners in keeping with her station. When her grandmother was dying in 1821 she addressed her last words to her granddaughter:

George Sand In June 1848, Victor Hugo remarked that the revolution had turned the world upside-down, drawing into the political arena two of the most famous writers of the time: "a woman called Lamartine and a man called George Sand." Hugo's irreverent jibe about Sand's refusal to conform to the gender conventions of her time can stand as emblematic of her ambiguous position in 1848. On the one hand, she played a decisive role in Ledru-Rollin's government; yet she never had an official position or title, and her labors remained unremunerated. After the revolution failed, she was criticized from the right for her radical position, and from the left for her "cowardly" retreat to Nohant. The events of February caught her off guard. She immediately rushed to Paris, arriving on March 1 and promptly obtained a " laissez-passer " allowing her free access to all the members of the provisional government. Her son's garret, 8 , where she lived, quickly became a central meeting place. Except for one trip to Nohant (March 7 to 21), she spent the entire time in Paris, until May 18, when, following days of unrest, a failed coup, and massive arrests, all hope of a democratic assembly was lost.

GEORGE SAND (1804-1876), the pseudonym of Madame Amandine Lucile Aurore Dudevant, Dupin, the most prolific authoress in the history of literature, and unapproached among the women novelists of France . Her life was as strange and adventurous as any of her novels, which are for the most part idealized versions of the multifarious incidents of her life. In her self-revelations she followed Rousseau, her first master in style , but while Rousseau in his Confessions darkened all the shadows, George Sand is the heroine of her story, often frail and faulty, but always a woman more sinned against than sinning. Thanks, however, to her voluminous correspondence that has recently been published and to family documents that her French biographers have unearthed, there are now full materials for tracing the history of her public and private career, and for forming a clear and unbiased estimate of her character and genius. Her father was Maurice Dupin, a retired lieutenant in the army of the republic; her mother, Sophie Delaborde, the daughter of a Paris bird -fancier. Their ill-assorted marriage took place only a month before the birth of the child (July 1, 1804; at Paris). Her paternal grandfather was M. Dupin de Francueil, a farmer-general of the revenue, who married the widow of Count

George Sand (1804-1876) - Pseudonym of Amandine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin French Romantic writer, who questioned the sexual identity and gender destinies in fiction. Outside the literary world, Sand was noted for her numerous love affairs with such prominent figures as Alfred de Musset "We cannot tear out a single page of our life, but we can throw the whole book in the fire. " (from Mauprat In 1831 Sand started to write for Le Figaro . She contributed Revue des Deux Mondes (1832-41) and (1848), and was a coeditor of (1841). During these years she had acquaintance with several poets, artists, philosophers, and politicians. With her lover Jules Sandeau she wrote in a few weeks a novel, ROSE ET BLANCHE, under the pseudonym Jules Sand. The second novel Indiana Indiana the poet Alfred de Musset sent an admiring letter to Sand which marked the beginning of their passionate relationship. At the age of 33 she started an affair with Chopin. The composer, however, did not first consider her attractive. "Something about her repels me," he said to his family. Their relationship ended in 1847 when Sand started to suspect that Chopin had fallen in love with her daughter, Solange. It is also possible, that behind the breakup was Sand's treatment of Solange; she had married the sculptor Auguste Clésinger in 1847 and turned against her mother with him. Chopin was on Solange's side.

"...people think it very natural and pardonable to trifle with what is most sacred when dealing with women: women do not count in the social or moral order. I solemnly vowand this is the first glimmer of courage and ambition in my life!that I shall raise woman from her abject position, both through my self and my writing, God will help me!...let female slavery also have its Spartacus. That shall I be, or perish in the attempt."
-George Sand in a letter to Frederic Girerd, 1837 (Winegarten, 161)
The romantic 19th century French novelist, George Sand, was born Aurore Dupin in 1804. In 1821, after both Aurore's father and grandmother had died, she married Casimir Dudevant to escape her mother's guardianship. Aurore soon found married life too constraining for her and so moved out. (At the time divorce was illegal and so she was only separated from her husband.) On her own, she soon realized that the monthly allowance she received from her husband was not enough to lead the life she once did and so she began to publish her writings to gain money. Her first few novels were co-written with her lover Jules Sandeau but in 1832 she wrote her first solo novel, Indiana, under the pseudonym George Sand.

George Sand
an amazing woman
George Sand (1804-1876) "The world will know and understand me someday.
But if that day does not arrive, it does not greatly matter.
I shall have opened the way for other women."
George Sand was an amazing author, personality, and all-around woman. She earned as much notoriety for her Bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. Born Aurore Dupin, she was the most famous woman writer in 19th-century France. A prolific and iconoclastic author of novels, stories, plays, essays, and memoirs, she represented the epitome of French romantic idealism. She demanded for women the freedom in living that was a matter of course to the men of her day. George's first independent novel, Indiana , the story of an unhappy wife who struggles to free herself from the imprisonment of marriage (explicitly called a form of slavery), made her an overnight celebrity. Subsequent novels, such as Valentine and Lélia , astounded readers with their frank exploration of women's sexual feelings and their passionate call for women's freedom to find emotional satisfaction. In the eyes of many critics, George's masterpiece is her autobiography. Though she was a brilliant writer, she was perhaps most famous for her personality and lifestyle. I have read several of her books, but her work is not why I think she is an amazing woman. Rather, it is her personal life...just being who she was is what makes her an amazing woman, especially considering the time when she lived and how radical a person she was-not only for that time, but for modern times as well.

Universal suffrage, that is to say the expression of the will of all, whether for good or ill, is a necessary safety-valve. Without it, you will get merely successive outbreaks of civil violence. This wonderful guarantee of security is there to our hands. It is the best counterweight so far discovered. There is only one happiness in life, to love and be loved. I ask the support of no one, neither to kill someone for me, gather a bouquet, correct a proof, nor to go with me to the theater. I go there on my own, as a man, by choice; and when I want flowers, I go on foot, by myself, to the Alps.

Sand, George (1804-1876) Amantine-Aurore-Lucile Dupin, better known as George Sand, is as infamous for her cigar-in-hand cross-dressing as she is famous for her eighty novels, twenty plays, and numerous political tracts. Sand also claimed an infamous ancestry. Her great-great-grandfather, an eighteenth-century king of Poland, sired out of wedlock her great-grandfather, who in turn fathered an illegitimate daughter, Sand's grandmother, Aurore Dupin de Franceuil. On her father's death, the future writer lived in the worlds of two women who hated each other, her aristocratic grandmother, owner of the estate of Nohant-Vic in Berry, and her mother, daughter of a Parisian bird seller. From her grandmother Sand inherited an independent spirit, and from her mother, a devotion to socialism. Sponsor Message.
