Justice to J.D. Salinger
By Janet Malcolm
The New Yorker in June 1965, it was greeted with unhappy, even embarrassed silence. It seemed to confirm the growing critical consensus that Salinger was going to hell in a handbasket. By the late Fifties, when the stories "Franny" and "Zooey" and "Raise High the Roof-Beam, Carpenters" were coming out in the magazine, Salinger was no longer the universally beloved author of The Catcher in the Rye ; he was now the seriously annoying creator of the Glass family. and "a piece of shapeless self-indulgence" by George Steiner. Now Alfred Kazin, in an essay sardonically entitled "J.D. Salinger: 'Everybody's Favorite,'" set forth the terms on which Salinger would be relegated to the margins of literature for doting on the "horribly precocious" Glasses. "I am sorry to have to use the word 'cute' in respect to Salinger," Kazin wrote, "but there is absolutely no other word that for me so accurately typifies the self-conscious charm and prankishness of his own writing and his extraordinary cherishing of his favorite Glass characters." McCarthy peevishly wrote: "Again the theme is the good people against the stupid phonies, and the good is still all in the family, like a family-owned 'closed' corporation.... Outside are the phonies, vainly signaling to be let in." And: "Why did [Seymour] kill himself? Because he had married a phony, whom he worshiped for her 'simplicity, her terrible honesty'?... Or because he had been lying, his author had been lying, and it was all terrible, and he was a fake?"

"We are not writing these letters to you. Indeed, we are merely writing to ourselves or to the part of ourselves that once had true literary aspirations, had honor, had good-hearted and honest artistic intentions, and was not jaded."
Adrian C. Louis
He published his only novel more than fifty years ago. He has hardly been seen or heard from since 1965. Most writers fitting such a description are long forgotten, but if the novel is The Catcher in the Rye and the writer is J. D. Salinger . . . well, he's the stuff of legends, the most famously reclusive writer of the twentieth century. If you could write to him, what would you say? Letters to J. D. Salinger includes more than one hundred and fifty personal letters addressed to Salinger from well-known writers, editors, critics, journalists, and other luminaries, as well as from students, teachers, and readers around the world, some of whom have just discovered Salinger for the first time. Their voices testify to the lasting impressions Salinger's ideas and emotions have made on so many diverse lives. Contributors include Marvin Bell, Frederick Busch, Stephen Collins, Nicholas Delbanco, Warren French, Herbert Gold, W. P. Kinsella, Molly McQuade, Stewart O'Nan, Robert O'Connor, Ellis Paul, Molly Peacock, Sanford Pinsker, George Plimpton, Gerald Rosen, Sid Salinger, David Shields, Joseph Skibell, Melanie Rae Thon, Alma Luz Villanueva, Katharine Weber, and many others.

"Bananafish" exists to discuss Salinger's work, not to distribute Salinger's or anyone else's writing without permission. Some Background Information
The highly successful Catcher is J. D. Salinger's only published novel. It is narrated by seventeen-year-old Holden Caulfield, a schoolboy in rebellion against the dubious values of the adult world. In 1949, while "recovering" in a California sanitorium, 17-year-old Holden relates events that occurred during three December days in 1948when he was sixteen. Within this part of the story, Holden frequently flashes back to experiences and people from earlier in his life. Much like Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn Catcher could be described as an American Bildungsroman : a picaresque novel that illustrates the moral development and attitudes of its nonconformist protagonist.

BY WAY OF INTRODUCTION This website is for people like me who love Salinger's Catcher in the Rye CR , and who might also find some of the things offered here interesting or striking or whatever. It's almost impossible to say in a few words why I like this book so much; therefore, to put it in a nutshell, I'll explain it like this:
I have a very poor memory, but if a time came in which - like in Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 - some people started memorizing works of literature because other people had started burning them, I would most willingly volunteer to learn The Catcher in the Rye by heart. June 1, 2006: NOTE : I just saw the Making of Fahrenheit 451 , and I was touched by what a critic said; she pointed out that the English expression " learn by heart " (a dead metaphor) actually implies something like love for the thing you learn - in this case, the book... The little lake near Central Park South where Holden Caulfield went to look for the ducks. In fact, the ducks are there in the background, but I'll have to admit it - you can hardly see them.

    Salinger, J. D.
Salinger, J. D. (Jerome David Salinger) u r) [ key The Catcher in the Rye (1951), is a picaresque novel that describes the adventures of a schoolboy at odds with society. It remains an extremely popular novel among adolescents, who view it as a testament to the purity and honesty of youth. Many of his short stories concern the Glass family, presented by Salinger as overly sensitive people in a materialistic world. In 1965, Salinger retreated from public life, winning an injunction in 1987 against a researcher who intended to publish excerpts of his letters. Collections of his stories, most of which first appeared in The New Yorker magazine, include

LIFE:

Salinger was born January 1, 1919. His father was a Jewish importer of meats and cheese; his mother was a Christian of Scotch-Irish descent. He attended various schools before graduating in 1936 from Valley Forge Military Academy with “satisfactory but not distinguished” grades (French 22). Friends from prep school remember his “sarcastic wit” (Books and Writers).
Following high school graduation, accounts of his life get somewhat murky. He was enrolled at NYU in summer 1937, although it’s not clear whether he actually attended. In 1938 he began classes at Ursinus College, Pennsylvania, but left at midterm. He later enrolled in a short-story class at Columbia, leading to his first publication in March of 1940. Sometime during this period, he apparently traveled to Europe and learned German.
Salinger was drafted in 1942 and served initially in the air corps. He landed in Normandy on D-Day and took part in five European campaigns. He allegedly married a French woman in 1945, but this cannot be confirmed from the record.
While at VF, he began to write short stories, “working by flashlight under his blankets after the official ‘lights out’” (Fisher 22-23). While in the service, he published various short stories, and he found a steady market for his writing after the war. His literary production peaked in 1948 with the appearance of five stories, three of them in the New Yorker, where he had by then joined the staff.
