      • UK Thursday, 6 September 2007 Frederick Thomas Saberhagen, writer: born Chicago, Illinois 18 May 1930; married 1968 Joan Spicci (two sons, one daughter); died Albuquerque, New Mexico 29 June 2007. That idea, first articulated in a 1963 story called "Fortress Ship", was the notion of the Berserkers, interstellar quasi-sentient self-replicating killing machines programmed to eliminate any life-form they encounter anywhere in the universe, millennia after the war they were created to wage had ended in the death of two ancient civilisations. Berserkers are terrifying not only because they are convincingly deadly, and chillingly able to learn from their mistakes, but because they are so profoundly hard-wired to obey their ancient mission that no argument can stay them. Berserkers echo earlier space-opera epics, in which humanity battles implacable foes; but Saberhagen's stories chillingly present the notion that life itself is a virus, and that the Berserkers are antibodies acting on behalf of an invaded universe.

Fred Saberhagen
Fred Saberhagen passed away this past weekend, after a long battle with cancer.
He was a fine human being, and a far better author than most people gave him credit for. He created two undying archetypes for science fiction: the first being the Berserkers , robotic combat machines whose destructiveness outlived the war for which they were created. So powerful was this archetype that it was ripped off repeatedly, sometimes by people who had no idea with whom the concept originated.
The other archetype was that of the modern, rational vampire who tells his own story. The Dracula Tape in which Dracula was given his own sardonic voice, was the first example of what turned out to be a hugely successful genre. Anne Rice and many others owe him a huge (and so far as I know unacknowledged) debt.
Fred's non-series work show a highly individual imagination at work: Octagon

Fred Saberhagen is Dead, But Not On Wikipedia
There's a note both in the SFWA private areas and on Harlan Ellison's message boards that Fred Saberhagen has passed away (he passed on June 29th). I tried, in the spirit of usefulness, to pass along the information to Saberhagen's Wikipedia entry, and was immediately beset by some random Wikitwittery at the hands of some git who thinks Harlan Ellison is not a sufficiently reliable source for this information. God save us all for people who do not know anything getting in the way of people who do. Of course, by noting his death here, at the site of a best-selling, Campbell-winning, two-time Hugo nominated science fiction author, possibly there it has been now sufficiently documented that it'll pass inspection by the Wikipedia Officious Prick Brigade. But someone else will have to make the notation; I'm done dealing with this jackass. (Update, 12:52 pm 7/3/07: Hey there, Farkers. Nice to see you. And if you're looking for even more snark before you head back out, check out this . Yes, apparently I'm full of piss and vinegar the last couple of days.)

FRED SABERHAGEN'S
BIOGRAPHY
Fred Saberhagen was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 18, 1930. He served early in the US Air Force, followed by working as a civilian electronics technician. Some of his first writings were several articles on the topics of science and technology for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Since then, Fred has become a very popular and well-known author in the fields of both science fiction and fantasy. The fictional worlds that he has created have grown and expanded over the years, resulting in at least four unique series. Berserker was published in 1967, beginning his best known and longest running science fiction series. In fact, this series has recently been optioned to New Line Cinema. His Swords Lost Swords , and Book of the Gods series have explored the worlds of fantasy. Less well known are Saberhagen's ventures into the arena of historical fantasy, where figures such as Hitler and Lincoln occupy his alternate worlds. He has also produced a unique picture of classic literary figures, including Dracula and Sherlock Holmes. (Please visit Fred's Bibliography page for a detailed listing of his published works) In the 1980's, Fred and his wife got involved in the computer game industry, attempting to bring interactive fiction based on his works to the, at that time, newly emerging cyberworld.

Fred Saberhagen A Short Biography Fred Saberhagen is the author of several popular science fiction and fantasy series. His Berserkers® have menaced the universe for almost 40 years. Fred's SWORDS and LOST SWORDS stories have caught the imagination of many fantasy readers. Less well known, but equally intriguing are Fred's exploits in the area of historical fantasy where figures such as Hitler and Lincoln, Daedalus and the pharaohs, populate his alternate worlds. On the border of history and fantasy Fred has created a unique picture of an old favorite, Dracula. More recent is the BOOK OF THE GODS series, a new telling of the ancient myths. Many of his works also appear in tape and e-book format. Before abandoning himself to imagination, Fred served in the US Air Force, worked as a civilian electronics technician, and wrote and edited articles on science and technology for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Fred was born and raised in Chicago. He now lives and works with his wife, Joan Spicci, in the Land of Enchantment, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA
