Rafael Sabatini was born in Jesi Italy to an English mother and Italian father. His parents were opera singers who became teachers At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages, living with his grandfather in England , attending school in Portugal and, as a teenager, in Switzerland . By the time he was seventeen, when he returned to England to live permanently, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language — English — to his linguistic collection. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English." After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. It took Sabatini roughly a quarter of a century of hard work before he attained success with Scaramouche in 1921. About This Person
From All Movie Guide: Rafael Sabatini is seldom mentioned in the 21st century indeed, he was seldom mentioned in popular culture during the final years of the 20th century, apart from a jocular reference in the prelude to the Michael Palin /Saturday Night Live sketch "The Adventures of Miles Copperthwaite." But during the first half of the 20th century, from the teens until the '40s, his books sold by the millions around the world, and movie studios lined up to bid on the film rights to his historical adventure stories.

Author rafael sabatini (18751950) was best known for his historical adventure epics Scaramouche, Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk.
    http://www.rafaelsabatini.com/
When Rafael Sabatini is mentioned most people think of high adventure, sword-fighting and damsels in distress. This isn't surprising since his most famous works have been translated into the classic swashbuckling films The Sea Hawk Scaramouche , and Captain Blood However, these three books represent a small fraction of Sabatini's work. A popular author during his lifetime, he produced 31 novels, 8 short novel/short story collections, 6 nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. Sabatini's writing, usually fiction in a historic setting, explores political intrigue, religion, and the place of chivalry and honor while entertaining with clever dialogue, deftly drawn characters and action sequences as vivid and thrilling as modern movies. If you are not as familiar with Sabatini's work as you would like to be, you can browse through reviews of his books through links on the Bibliography page to discover online reviews of his books, or find some of his short stories linked through the

    St. Martin's Summer

The horror in the secretary's eyes increased, but Anselme's reflected none of it. It was a grave thing, he knew by former experience, to arouse His Majesty's Seneschal of Dauphiny from his after-dinner nap; but it was an almost graver thing to fail in obedience to that black-eyed woman below who was demanding an audience.

All that he achieved by this was to exasperate; and his expulsion from a society grown mistrustful of him must already have followed but for his friend, Philippe de Vilmorin, a divinity student of Rennes, who, himself, was one of the most popular members of the Literary Chamber. Captain Blood Mr. Blood's attention was divided between his task and the stream of humanity in the narrow street below; a stream which poured for the second time that day towards Castle Field, where earlier in the afternoon Ferguson, the Duke's chaplain, had preached a sermon containing more treason than divinity.

Rafael Sabatini was born in Jesi, Italy on April 29, 1875, to opera singers Vincenzo and Anna Sabatini. Educated in Switzerland and Portugal, Sabatini was fluent in several languages; however, his mother, herself English, saw to it that English was his most natural tongue. After spending most of his life traveling Europe, Sabatini settled in England around the turn of the century and began his career as a writer publishing his first novel, The Lovers of Yvonne , in 1902. In 1918, he became a British citizen and served in the War Office Intelligence Department during World War I. In 1902, he married his first wife, Ruth Goad Dixon; their son Rafael died in a motorcycle accident in 1927. Following his divorce in 1932, Sabatini married Christine Dixon (no relation to his previous wife) and remained with her until his death in 1950 while on holiday in Adelboden, Switzerland.
