22. John Ruskin
Brief biography of john ruskin, from the Victorian Station.
http://www.victorianstation.com/authorruskin.htm
John Ruskin
John Ruskin, the greatest Victorian bar Victoria, was an artist, scientist, poet, environmentalist, philosopher, and, importantly here, the pre-eminent art critic of his time. He provided the impetus that gained respectability for the Pre-Raphaelites. Ruskin's letter to The Times in 1851, supporting the much-derided Pre-Raphaelites for their naturalism and truth to nature, marked a turning point in their perception by the public. In a second letter, he wrote that the Pre-Raphaelites might "lay the foundation of a school of art nobler than the world has seen for 300 years." When, after this, Ruskin met the Pre-Raphaelites, he encouraged them in their ideals, acting as tutor, mentor, and generous supporter to Rossetti, Millais and Holman Hunt, as well as later artists in a similar spirit such as John Brett and John William Inchbold. He was a long-time friend of the children's illustrator Kate Greenaway, and also of the bird-painter H. S. Marks. Ruskin taught Pre-Raphaelite style drawing at the Working Men's College in London for some years, enlisting Rossetti to teach figure and watercolor painting, and afterwards Ford Madox Brown to fill the same position. Afterwards, he left London, becoming Slade Professor of Art at Oxford (where there is an art college named after him) and then removing to the Lake District where he helped to start the Environmental Movement.

John Ruskin: A Portrait Gallery
Victorian Web Home Authors John Ruskin Ruskin and the Arts ... Ruskin's drawings and watercolors According to Jeremy Maas, "Together with Thomas Carlyle , Ruskin was one of the most photographed of eminent men of the 19th century. He was always at his best full face, his profile sometimes assuming a somewhat predatory appearance with his prominent beak-like nose." Therfore, as one might expect, caricatures, including those by Max Beerbohm , David Levine, and Vanity Fair , emphasize Ruskin-with-a-beak. But as Maas points out, "As a young man he was quite handsome; as an old man his looks betokened the prophet and sage that he was. Perhaps the most striking early photograph is that taken by William Downey in 1863. Those taken by Frederick Hollyer are the finest of him in old age. The most famous oil portrait of Ruskin was of him at Gelnfinlas, by Millais. Several artists made portraits of him, including members of the Richmond family, Herkomer, Arthur Severn, and W. G. Collingwood." [Click on thumbnails for larger pictures and information about them, including date where known, source, and possible discussions by Ruskin, his editors, or others.]

John Ruskin, William Morris and the Gothic Revival
In the mid-nineteenth century interest in the Illuminated Manuscript was revived by John Ruskin. Ruskin saw the ornately decorated pre-print books produced by monastic scribes as examples of the Gothic, an aesthetic Ruskin championed as providing the artistic fulfilment lost in the age of mass production. The medieval mode of production, Ruskin argued, provided the artisan with an opportunity for individual expression; the artisan contributed not simply his labour power, but his expertise and aesthetic sensibility. As a result, the Gothic represented a kind of high water mark in artistic production. Like Blake , Ruskin felt the illuminated book was a means to political and spiritual reform, a way of breaking with the capitalist mode of production which took the means of artistic production out of the hands of the individual and placed it in the hands of the factory owner: It is with a view [...] to the re-opening of this great field of human intelligence, long entirely closed, that I am striving to [...] revive the art of illumination, properly so called; not the art of miniature-painting in books, or on vellum [...] but of making writing , simple writing, beautiful to the eye, by investing it with the great chord of colour, blue, purple, scarlet, white and gold, and in that chord of colour, permitting the continual play of the fancy of the writer in every species of grotesque imagination [...]. Virginia Tech: Mourning the Loss of Manhood
Mark Steyn has written a thought-provoking piece in National Review . In it he critiques the "culture of passivity" that has emasculated our nation. While the students' response to the Virginia Tech murders is an extreme example of the results of our national assault on manhood; conventional illustrations take place every day, closer to home. None more obvious than the lack of leadership in the Illinois General Assembly, where they do "
