This conference examines the poetry and philosophy of Rumi, the 13th-century Muslim poet, philosopher, and mystic, and its relevance to contemporary understandings of Islamic culture. It also deals with a renewed interest in Rumi's writings in recent years throughout the Middle East, Europe, and the United States. The starting point of the conference is Rumi's well-known verse "come, come again, whoever you are, come!" Rumi's eloquent and humanistic poetry, written sometimes with a sense of humor, creates a window on Islamic beliefs, values, and wisdom that is far removed from images of violence and terrorism. Bringing together well-known scholars of Islamic mysticism, Rumi, and the Middle East, we explore Rumi's writings, their place in Islamic literature and society, and their resurgence as bestsellers in the West. The universality of Rumi's poetry fosters an understanding of the human experience that transcends the boundaries of nations, religions, and languages. This day-long conference concludes with a night of poetry reading, whirling dervishes, and traditional sufi music. Coleman Barks, one of the most successful translators of Rumi's work in the United States, will read Rumi's poetry with accompanying musicians.

Celebrating 800 Years of Rumi, Sufi Poet of Peace
Written by stevegh Sunday, 13 January 2008 "Rumi's poetry, originally written in Persian, has endured through the centuries, especially in the Islamic world. Jalal al-Din Rumi (1207 - 1273) The greatest mystical poet of Persia, famous for his didactic epic Masnavi-ye Ma'navi (Spiritual Couplets), a treasure-house of Sufi mysticism. The theme of Rumi's ghazals is sacred love. After Rumi's death his disciples were organized as the Mawlawiyah order, called in the West the "Whirling Dervishes". This poetry. I never know what I'm going to say.
I don't plan it.
Whewn I'm outside the saying of it,
I get very quiet and rarely speak at all.

(from 'Who says words with my mouth?', trans. by Coleman Barks Jalal al-Din Rumi, known to his disciples as Maulana Rumi, "Our Master, the Byzantine", was born in Balkh, Ghurid empire (now in Afghanistan). His father, Baha'uddin Walad, was a jurist and preacher. The family moved from place to place, perhaps because political reasons or because Baha'uddin Walad did not have success as a preacher. Also the times were violent. The Mongols had turned against the Islamic states. They destroyed Balkh in 1221, and eventually conquered Baghdad in 1258. According to some sources, Rumi was visiting Baghdad just before it was sacked by the Mongols. The family settled for some time in Aleppo and Damascus, where Rumi is said to have studied. He perhaps met the great mystic Ibn al-Arabi (d.1240) or his students. From Syria the family travelled to Laranda, where Rumi's mother, Mu'mine Khatun, died.

Mevlana Jallaluddin Rumi “If you have lost heart in the Path of Love Flee to me without delay I am a fortress; invincible” - Rumi The essence of all religions is to reach God or the Truth, or the Absolute Reality. The religions are like different rivers flowing into the same Sea. They may have different ways, but the destination is the same. Mevlana Rumi’s message is still relevant after seven hundred years. Rumi was a great thinker/philosopher, poet, or Sufi in present day Turkey. I read this about Mevlana Rumi written by a journalist some years ago “If one were to ask Mevlana Rumi what exactly he was he might say “nothing but a lover of God”. His century was also a century of war and famine, where the Mongol hordes had wrecked havoc in Asia. Not much different from our own, where the majority of human race lives below the poverty line and is constantly at war. Mevlana Rumi had come from present day Afghanistan to Konya escaping the Mongol invasion. His family settled in present day Turkey. Mevlana Rumi soon became a very famous jurisprudent and preacher in Konya after his father’s death. At this point in his life he was already an accomplished Sufi master but restricted his spiritual teachings to a small selection of disciples but never exposed this publicly.

from The Masnavi , c. 1250 CE
[Horne Introduction]
The Music of Love Hail to thee, then, O Love, sweet madness!
Thou who healest all our infirmities!
Who art the Physician of our pride and self-conceit!
Who art our Plato and our Galen!
Love exalts our earthly bodies to heaven,
And makes the very hills to dance with joy!
O lover, 'twas Love that gave life to Mount Sinai,
When "it quaked, and Moses fell down in a swoon." Did my Beloved only touch me with His lips, I too, like a flute, would burst out into melody. The Beloved When the rose has faded and the garden is withered, The song of the nightingale is no longer to be heard. The Beloved is all in all, the lover only veils Him; The Beloved is all that lives, the lover a dead thing. When the lover feels no longer love's quickening, He becomes like a bird who has lost its wings. Alas! How can I retain my senses about me
