Jalal al-Din Rumi Persian Sufi Sage and Poet (Miniature painting of Rumi by Hossein Behzad) Jalal al-Din Rumi, was born in Balkh on the 30 th September, 1207. His proper name was Mubammad, title Jalal al-Din and later "Khudawandagar" , "lord". In his poetry he used the pen-name "khamush" (meaning "silent") and from the 15 th century came to be known as Mawlawi , the term deriving from his earlier title of Mulla-yi rum , "the learned master of Anatolia". His disciples, such as Ahmad Aflaki called him "The Greatest Mystery of God" (sirr Allah al-a'zam) , while the Persian speaking world usually refers to him as Mawlana. In the West where his fame has spread steadily since the 19 th century he is usually known as Rumi, (meaning from Roman Anatolia). Rumi's father Muhammad ibn Hussain Khatibi, known as Baha' al-Din Walad (entitled Sultan al-'ulama'), was an outstanding Sufi in Balkh. He is the author of the Ma'arif , a masterpiece of Sufism, which left its mark upon Rumi's Mathnawi When Rumi was about twelve or thirteen years old (around 1220), Baha al-Din Walad left the eastern provinces of Persia with his whole family and a group of disciples and travelled westward. This may have been as a result of the threat of invading Mongol armies. It is said that in Nayshapur he met the renowned Persian Sufi poet Farid al-Din 'Attar and presented Jalal al-Din to him. Apparently Sheikh 'Attar was very impressed by the young Rumi, and told Baha' al-Din Walad, 'soon this son of thine shall set the spiritual aspirants of this world afire'.

About us
You find us in walking distance from most of the important places, only 300 meter from Plaza de Armas. We are part of the historic Cusco, and placed in a dead end street which assures you tranquility during your stay with us.
The name Rumi Punku comes from Quechua:
Rumi means stones.
Punku means door or entrance.
Our doorway is certainly of Inca construction, and the double Jamb indicates that it was once the entrance to a very sacred place; in this case, the original purpose is unknown. The Inca doorway is considered a Historic Monument of the City of Cusco by INC (National Institute of Culture). Today this doorway welcomes you.
Inside you will find colonial buildings around two courtyards, and in the back; facing a beautiful Inca wall, you find a peaceful garden. We have a new Cafeteria with a light atmosphere, and a panoramic view towards San Blas. In our lounge you find a fireplace. Here you can relax and watch TV or enjoy a game of chess, darts or internet.

World’s first oil paintings found in Afghan caves
Bamiyan is no ordinary location. This was the place where the giant Buddhas that stood for centuries with their message of peace were destroyed by the Taliban. And, now this startling revelation. There is tragedy laced with irony here.   Forget Renaissance Europe. The world’s first oil paintings go back nearly 14 centuries to murals in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan caves, a Japanese researcher says. Buddhist images painted in the central Afghan region, dated to around 650 AD, are the earliest examples of oil used in art history, says Yoko Taniguchi, an expert at Japan’s National Research Institute for Cultural Properties. A group of Japanese, European and US scientists are collaborating to restore damaged murals in caves in the Bamiyan Valley, famous for its two gigantic statues of the Buddha which were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. Rumi video

Rumi is one of the most read and well known poets in the world. When my husband and I saw the movie "Rumi, Poet of The Heart" in San Rafael, California, I got a warm feeling and was very happy to see how much the poetry of Rumi touches people's hearts. At one point, when tears came to my eyes because I was moved by truthfulness of Rumi's poetry, I realized that everyone else in the theater had been touched. After a rough day at work or even before starting my day, listening to Rumi's poetry gives me a warm, hopeful, and serene feeling. Jelaluddin Rumi was born in the Eastern part of the Ancient Persian Empire near Balkh (presently Afghanistan ), on September 30, 1207. His first name literally means Majesty of Religion, Jalal means majesty and din means religion. Because of the threat of Mongol invasion in Persia his family fled, finally settling in Konya, Turkey. He passed away, on December 17, 1273. His shrine is in Konya. As a genius theologian, a brilliant scholar, and a pillar of Islam, he followed in his father place until his spiritual friend and teacher, Shams of Tabriz appeared in his life. Rumi underwent a spiritual transformation in 1244 after meeting Shams. With appearance of Shams, Rumi became reborn and soon started his marvelous work "Masnavi," (Mathnawi) consisting of 24,000 verses at age 38. His other famous work is "Divan-e Shams-e Tabriz" (the collective poems of Shams of Tabriz). Rumi's poetry has a mystic connotation, a combination that is the universal language of the human soul. Rumi's title is Moulana (Mowlana) which means our master.

Sufi mystic poet Jelaluddin Rumi, born more than 700 years ago, is now one of the most popular poets in the world. Rumi’s poems strike chords of spiritual longing and love in so many of us – including me. My love of his work led to this website, and my production of a CD of Rumi’s poems set to music. The CD is entitled Secret Language – Rumi – A Celebration in Song. Each Rumi poem I heard or read sparked a song in me – they simply arose. And those who heard them encouraged me to record them. I sought permission from Coleman Barks, one of the foremost of Rumi’s translators in the West, to use his beautiful translations of Rumi’s work. With his blessing, I used these poems of Rumi as the lyrics for each of these “Rumi songs”. Together with a group of musicians who also love Rumi poems, including singer Laurie Burke, and producer Kit Walker, I created this collection of Rumi songs for your listening, dancing and singing pleasure. If you’ve found this site, I’m guessing you also love the poems of Rumi. I invite you to listen to excerpts from these songs right here on the site. It’s my joy to share the magic of Rumi with you. These poems made my heart sing – and the rest of me soon followed! I hope the songs do the same for you.

Celebrating Rumi, Islam's poet of peace
The Sufi mystic's message of love still reverberates on the 800th anniversary of his birth.
By Nicole Itano from the January 2, 2008 edition E-mail Print Letter to the Editor Republish ... digg Page 1 of 2 KONYA, Turkey - A Turkish saying goes: When there's trouble in the world, come to Konya. So, on a wet November day, Halit Tuten and his friends found themselves hundreds of miles from home, shoulder to shoulder with fellow worshipers and pilgrims – as well as the odd curious tourist – searching for some kind of peace. At first glance, this sprawling metropolis isn't an obvious destination for a spiritual journey. Set in Turkey's agricultural heartland, Konya is a booming center of commerce and trade whose factories churn out much of the country's wheat and sugar. But Mr. Tuten and his friends haven't come to see Konya's utilitarian present. They're here to get a glimpse into its mystic past, to a time when dervishes whirled their way to enlightenment and Christians, Muslims, and Jews gathered to listen to the words of a holy man, and his message of peace and tolerance. The 13th-century philosopher and mystic poet Mevlana Jalludin Rumi, whose message of peace still reverberates centuries later, is buried in the center of the city, in a spectacular green-tiled mausoleum.

    Translations in comparison
The quality and style of English language translations of Rumi's poetry vary widely. Two early translators, R.A. Nicholson and A.J. Arberry (Scottish and British, respectively) produced literal and semi-literal translations of many of Rumi's works, including a series of the ghazals (love poems) from the Diwan, Rumi's collection of miscellaneous verse, in the 19th century. Many of the more familiar English versions, particularly those of Coleman Barks, are based on previous literal translations, and are intended primarily to render the spirit of Rumi's work in a form accessible to the Western mind, although frequently at the cost of any attempt at literal accuracy.
