Descent

Be Lost in the Call Lord, said David, since you do not need us,
why did you create these two worlds? Reality replied: O prisoner of time, I was a secret treasure of kindness and generosity, and I wished this treasure to be known, so I created a mirror: its shining face, the heart; its darkened back, the world; The back would please you if you've never seen the face. Has anyone ever produced a mirror out of mud and straw? Yet clean away the mud and straw, and a mirror might be revealed. Until the juice ferments a while in the cask

Wakhsh belonged to the larger province of Balkh, and in the year Rumi was born, his father was an appointed scholar there.

Enjoy the timeless wisdom of rumi (Masnavi) poetry.

Rumi Poem 1 Poem 3 Poem 2 Poem 4 ... Poem 7 Rumi's Life Jelaluddin Rumi was born in the region today known as Afghanistan in 1207. His family fled the Mogul invasion to Konya, Turkey where he spent most of his life. Rumi following in his fathers ancestoral line became a scholar until his meeting with the wandering dervish, Shams of Tabriz. Of this meeting Rumi said, "What I had thought of before as God, I met today in a person." After Shams, Rumi's other strong influences were Saladin Zarkub, the goldsmith, and later his scribe, Husam. His poetry filled with a longing to be with the Friend, Him, or You. Are these mysterious pronouns the names of God, Shams, or who? This is for you, the reader to ponder. Rumi founded the Mevlevi Order of dervishes, better known as the Whirling Dervishes of Sufism. Through a turning movement, body posturing, mental focus, and sound, the dervish achieves ecstasy through union with God. Once a secret society, today the Mevlevi tour the world allowing audiences to witness the ceremony of their sacred dances and music. It is also interesting to note that similar to other major religions, Islam frowns upon dancing and using words such as "gamble," "drunk," and "wine" which you find throughout Rumi's and other great Islamic and Sufi poets writings. Obviously they mean "drunk" on God's grace, but that's not to say they wouldn't be outcast by religious fundamentalists today.

mystical poets Rumi was born in 1207 on the Eastern shores of the Persian Empire. He was born in the city of Balkh( in what is now Afghanistan), and finally settled in the town of Konya, in what is now Turkey. It was a period of remarkable social and political turbulence. The 13th Century was the era of the crusades; also the area where Rumi lived was under constant threat of Mongol invasion. The great upheavals Rumi faced during his life is said to have influenced much of his poetry. Rumi met many of the great Sufi poets . For example, as a young boy he met the Sufi Master, Attar . Attar is said to have commented about Rumi. "There goes a river dragging an ocean behind it."

Jalal al-Din Rumi (c. 1207-73) is a famous Muslim mystic and poet. Fleeing the Mongol invaders, his family emigrated from Balkh (in modern Afghanistan) to Konya (a city now in central Turkey). Rumi began his career as a preacher and theologian, but after meeting a dervish, he became a mystic, or Sufi . His followers formed the Mevlevi order of dervishes, sometimes known in the West as the "whirling dervishes," after their dance that emulates the movement of planets on their journey of spiritual fulfillment. Rumi wrote the largest corpus of lyric poetry in the Persian language, amounting to 40,000 couplets, as well as a 25,000 couplet epic, the Mathnavi. Rumi's poetry has universal appeal; he is today the best selling poet in the USA.

ABOUT MAWLANA JALALUDDIN RUMI
Jalaluddin Rumi (may God sanctify his holy spirit) was one of the
greatest Muslim saints and mystics. He has also been hailed by
Western scholars as the greatest mystical poet of all time. And
popularized versions of his poetry have made him the best-selling
poet in America in recent years after a period of over 700 years,
during which his fame has endured in the Middle East, Central
Asia, and the Indian subcontinent.
The popularity of his poetry has spread in the West because of its
heart-felt themes of lover-beloved mysticism, and its spiritual joy
which seems to emanate even from the most distorted versions in English. However, the popularization of his poetry has also been attained by a number of sacrifices: (1) a lack of accuracy of the meanings of his words and teachings; and (2), a deliberate minimization and evasion of verses in his poetry that reveal that he was a pious Muslim all his life, and a very devoted follower of the prayerful daily life exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (may God pour blessings upon him).

Different qualities of Rumi have been brought forth by a variety of new translations that have appeared during the nineteen-eighties. He has been presented as both refined and sensual, sober and ecstatic, deeply serious and extremely funny, rarefied and accessible. It is a sign of his profound universality that he has been so many things to so many people.
Rumi's Life
J
Mevlâna's early spiritual education was under the tutelage of his father Bahauddin and later under his father's close friend Sayyid Burhaneddin of Balkh. The circumstances surrounding Sayyid's undertaking of the education of his friend's son are interesting: Sayyid had been in Balkh, Afghanistan when he felt the death of his friend Bahauddin and realized that he must go to Konya to take over Jalâluddîn's spiritual education. He came to Konya when Mevlâna was about twenty-four years old, and for nine years instructed him in "the science of the prophets and states," beginning with a strict forty day retreat and continuing with various disciplines of meditation and fasting. During this time Jalâluddîn also spent more than four years in Aleppo and Damascus studying with some of the greatest religious minds of the time.

I swear this is how it happened, and you'll just have to believe me. We're sitting at this chunky timber table - at Rumi, a converted corner shop in East Brunswick's Lygon Street cafe belt - and, as a result of frenzied, God-I-cannot-wait-to-eat ordering, the table is covered with food. Lebanese/Persian food. But not falafel, tabbouleh, chicken wings and hummus, as much as I love that stuff; really interesting traditional food like hot yoghurt soup and a radish/cos salad with a sweet-and-sour dressing and fragrant meat balls in a saffron/tomato sauce and labneh sheltering a pool of green olive oil and filo cigars filled with fetta, red capsicum and basil.

Coleman Barks’ The Essential Rumi has sold over 100,000 copies and he is considered the preeminent translator of Rumi today. In 1995, Barks saw filmmaker Haydn Reiss’ documentary "William Stafford & Robert Bly:A Literary Friendship" and suggested to Reiss that a film about Rumi would be timely. "RUMI: Poet of the Heart" features Barks along with poet/translator Robert Bly (who in 1976 encouraged Barks to begin to translate Rumi); author Deepak Chopra, storyteller and mythologist Michael Meade, and religious historian and author of The World’s Religions Huston Smith. Oud virtuoso Hamza El Din and singer Jai Uttal offer inspiring accompaniment to this beautifully produced film. A lively and provocative exploration of the genius and timeliness of Rumi’s emergence in the west.

Molana Jalal-e-Din Mohammad Molavi Rumi
Jalal-e-Din Mohammad Molavi Rumi J alal-e-Din Mohammad Molavi Rumi was born in 1207 A.D. at Balkh in the north-eastern provinces of Persia (present day Afghanistan). His father Baha al-Din was a renowned religious scholar. Under his patronage, Rumi received his early education from Syed Burhan-al-Din. When his age was about 18 years, the family ( after several migrations) finally settled at Qonya and at the age of 25, Rumi was sent to Aleppo (present day Syria) for advanced education and later to Damascus. Rumi continued with his education till he was 40 years old, although on his father's death Rumi succeeded him as a professor in the famous Madrasah at Qonya at the age of about 24 years. He received his mystical training first at the hands of Syed Burhan al-Din and later he was trained by Shams-e Tabrizi. He became famous for his mystical insight, his religious knowledge and as a Persian poet. He used to teach a large number of pupils at his Madrasah and also founded the famous Molavi Order in Tasawwof (Sufism). He died in 1273 A.D. at Qonya (present day Turky), which subsequently became a sacred place for dancing dervishes of the Molavi Order.
