Juan Rulfo and his novel, Johanna Seligman, Hispanic Literature Juan Rulfo Juan Rulfo was born in Sayula, Mexico on May 16th, 1918. He was a product of the rural countryside and his parents were wealthy land owners before the Cristero uprisings between 1926 and 29. Rulfo began work as a writer when his family moved to Mexico City later in his life. It was there that he began working on scripts and film production. Rulfo's writing became important to the genre of "magic realism," a discipline that incorporated techniques such as interior monologue, flashbacks, the voice of the dead, and a stream-of-consciousness style of writing. Though his influence on that genre is great, the fruit of his existence as a writer was not plentiful. One collection of short fiction, El llano en llamas , was published in 1953 and was engendered by his life in Mexico City; another book, Pedro Paramo followed soon after in 1955. Rulfo lived in Mexico City for most of his life, teaching and advising young, aspiring writers at various universities and schools. INTRODUCTION Considered one of Mexico's most notable authors, Rulfo established an international literary reputation on only two works, a collection of short stories and a novel, published within three years of each other in the 1950s. His fiction depicts the lives of people in the arid lands of central Mexico. Although local in their settings, Rulfo's works transcend contextual themes to explore universal, metaphysical, social, and political questions. Biographical Information Rulfo was born in central Mexico in the Jalisco region. During his early childhood, the war of the Cristeros took place. A political uprising of the Catholic clergy against the Mexican government, this event and its repercussions became a recurring theme in his later work. In the 1920s both of his parents died and Rulfo was sent to an orphanage where he remained until 1933. After a brief stint in university, he became an immigration agent. Los cuadernos de Juan Rulfo se publicó en México hace dos años, y recogen sus apuntes literarios. Unas 180 páginas componen el libro, y en él figuran cuentos que no llegó a publicar, esbozos de sus novelas Pedro Páramo y La cordillera (inconclusa o apenas dibujada). Al igual que ahora con las cartas, le fue arduo entonces a la señora Aparicio decidirse a dar a la imprenta aquellas notas de su marido, y de ahí que exclamase en la breve introducción rulfiana que inicia la obra: “Al parecer, es algo terrible lo que estoy haciendo”. Creía que Rulfo no lo hubiese aprobado, pues en vida él jamás pensó en hacerlo, esto es, dar publicidad a lo apuntado en sus cuadernos. Escribió la novela "El hijo del desaliento", de la que sólo se conoció el texto "Un pedazo de noche", publicado por la Revista Mexicana de Literatura en 1959. Efrén Hernández, un compañero de trabajo a quien Rulfo admitía como su único maestro, lo impulsó para entrara a trabajar en América, revista de la que tiempo después fue miembro del consejo de redactores. En 1924 quedó huérfano de padre. Durante su infancia fue testigo de los dramáticos cambios políticos de su país (en 1926 se inició la revolución cristera). Al comienzo de su adolescencia, en 1930, quedó también huérfano de madre, y tanto Juan como sus hermanos quedaron a cargo de la abuela materna. Pasó el resto de su adolescencia como interno en un colegio de monjas, y al terminar su educación secundaria se trasladó temporalmente a la ciudad de México; al no poder ingresar a la universidad por prolongadas huelgas, se radicó con un tío suyo que era militar. Intentó comenzar su carrera como abogado, pero no pasó los exámenes. En 1936 comenzó a escribir ficción. En el 38 inició una novela llamada El hijo del desaliento , que nunca se terminó, y publicó su primer cuento, "La vida no es muy seria en sus cosas". En la vida literaria de Rulfo muchas cosas quedaron interminadas: son numerosos los escritos que comenzó pero pocos los que culminó. Durante los años siguientes su actividad como intelectual aumentó gradualmente; participó en diferentes revistas y sostuvo una relación cercana con otros intelectuales. En el 45 se publicó algunos de los cuentos que más tarde harían parte de El llano en llamas Nos han dado la tierra y Macario . En el 47 contrajo nupcias con Clara Aparicio, con la cual tuvo cuatro hijos.
