  • About Archives Thanks Pictures ... Interviews My friend and colleague Tom Georgoulias let me run this interview in my book, Follow for Now On the Road (Viking, 1959) and an issue of Scientific American after a run through the mince cycle on a blender. I recently had the chance to catch up with Rucker and discuss two of his most recent books, Seek! (Four Walls Eight Windows, 1999) and Saucer Wisdom (Forge Books, 1999). Tom Georgoulias: Seek! Rudy Rucker: The catch is that there is such a great disparity between a desktop computer and a billion-year planetary analog computation. Even with the biggest imaginable kinds of increases in our computing power, our machines will remain very tiny playpens. One final, encouraging, thought is that, as our machines become networked into a planetary web, the collective power of our machines can experience some synergetic increases. Evolution takes a lot of machine cycles, and when we can distribute this kind of search to lots of users, we get a terrific speed-up. The trick here is getting people to run your simulation code. In my novel The Hacker and the Ants TG: In your writings about cellular automata (CA), you mention how parallel processing hardware is best suited for running CA simulations. There are many supercomputers designed with parallel architectures, but for the most part engineers keep cranking out more powerful computers based on the von Neumann architecture. What are the final challenges left in designing parallel systems and how can they be overcome so that CA programs can advance even further?

"Postsingular"
(Reviewed by Kirstin Merrihew JAN 4, 2008) "Wheenk..." That WHEENK is the name of the "metanovel" one of the Postsingular characters busies herself creating during the course of the book. It's also a perfect poster word for describing this Rudy Rucker sci-fi extravaganza. This is one wheenkin' ride!
Early in the book, the autistic boy genius, Chu, corrects his joking biotech genius father about a BIG number: " 'Ten to the thirty-ninth is duodecillion' " he chides, " 'Not umptisquiddlyzillion." But umptisquiddlyzillion just about covers the nearly endless gush of ideas that Rucker looses in this novel. What most people wouldn't give to have that many inventive thoughts in ten lifetimes, and he nonchalantly dispenses them in one volume!

Hieronymus Bosch's Apprentice by Rudy Rucker
6,200 Words. Dark-varnished planks of wood made up the floor. The ceiling was painted with an elaborately twining squash vine adorned with birds and beasties peeping from behind each flower and leaf. Counters and cupboards lined the walls, with a sturdy wooden table beside a window. The red-cheeked young maid sprang to her feet, ran back towards the hearth and snatched up a long, skinny boning knife. Aleid, too, hastened to the far side of the room and turned, watching for a move from the strangers. But the feat of strength only frightened the women. The fact that Jayjay and Thuy could move six times as fast as the Hibraners made them rather uncanny. Aleid found a knife of her own. Kathelijn crouched and pointed hers at Jayjay. He clattered the chair to the floor and backed away. Aleid nodded, and the maid gave each of them a raw June carrot, crunchy and sweet. A cluttered work table sat in the middle of the studio, and beyond that was Jeroen Bosch, standing before the window, brush in hand, the light falling over his shoulder onto a large, square oak panel. Bosch tightened his lips, clearly doubting this.

Rucker's alter ego, Conrad Bunger, is one of those reckless guys you knew just wasn't going to reach legal drinking age. However, thanks to the supernatural powers he manifests in times of crisis, not even the most ghastly mishaps interrupt his quest for booze, girls, and enlightenment. From a Catholic high school to college, he gradually awakens to his secret identity as an energy being from outer space. His solemn commission: to proceed incognito and return with the ultimate prize knowledge of the Secret of Life. Problem is, Conrad's having too darn much fun to keep it together.

19. Rudy Rucker Book Reviews
For sheer extrapolative whimsy, rudy rucker s novels and stories are an essential starting point for readers who like their futures weirder than usual.
http://www.mactonnies.com/rudyrucker.html
Rudy Rucker Book Reviews
by Mac Tonnies For sheer extrapolative whimsy, Rudy Rucker's novels and stories are an essential starting point for readers who like their futures weirder than usual. Of the "original" cyberpunks (including Gibson Sterling and Shirley ), Rucker is without doubt the zaniest; his writing recalls both Kurt Vonnegut and William S. Burroughs. An "autobiographical" painting by Rucker. A mathematician and hacker with a number of nonfiction works to his credit (as well as a variety of user-friendly software programs), Rucker has coined the term "transrealism" to describe his pseudo-autobiographical fiction; while his stories are wacky beyond compare, it's usually not too difficult to make out a fictionalized Rucker lurking in the narrative, along with characterizations of friends and family. (The crafty and cerebral "Saucer Wisdom" is perhaps his most blatantly "transreal" novel to date.) Boppers: an A-life program by Rucker. Because of his unusual perspective, Rudy Rucker is perhaps best classed as an acquired taste; like his contemporaries, Rucker is delightfully impossible to pigeonhole. The complimentary anthologies of Rucker's essays and short fiction ("Seek!" and "Gnarl"!) ably demonstrate Rucker's prowess as a futurist, thinker and cybernetic philosopher. Reading Rucker is a rewarding experience, and I urge anyone with an open mind and high literary ideals to take the plunge. Related links: Rudy Rucker's official site FREK AND THE ELIXIR Arguably an hommage to "juvenile" science fiction such as Robert Heinlein's early novels, "Frek and the Elixir" is surprisingly astute, lacking none of the whimsy and wonder familiar to fans of the "Ware" series. "Frek" is a bountiful, mature epic packed with hysterically bent takes on SF themes, from biotechnology to artificial life to String Theory. One of Rucker's funniest books, "Frek" chronicles the adventures of a likeable kid from the third millennium who finds himself the fulcrum of a galactic entertainment contract.
