    Gabrielle Roy
Gabrielle Roy's first and perhaps best-known work is the novel Bonheur d'occasion (1945) which was translated in 1947 in the States by Hannah Josephson as The Tin Flute , and again in 1980 for Canada by Allan Brown. The story is set in WWII Montreal, and follows the stories of a poor family living in the St-Henri district. It marks a significant shift in French-Canadian literature, for the first time realistically depicting the reality of life in the city and the effects of the war on the society. She is the first Canadian to win France's Prix Femina for this novel, and also won the Governor-General's Award in 1947 for the translated work. Her early works of fiction usually fall under two categories: gripping realist tales from the city, or nostalgic semi-autobiographical tales from the country. Her second novel La petite poule d'eau (1950) falls in the latter category. Inspired by the people she met while teaching in small town in Manitoba, the novel features a family living on an isolated farm. Her next work, Alexandre Chenevert (1954) returns to the city and deals with post-WWII Montreal .

Present Owner: La Maison Gabrielle-Roy Inc.
The house at 375 rue Deschambault is intimately connected with one of Canada's most important writers: Gabrielle Roy. Gabrielle Roy lived in the house for a total of 28 years, from her birth (1909) until she left St. Boniface, and eventually Manitoba, to pursue her teaching and then her writing careers (1937). It was in this house, and in the St. Boniface neighbourhood, that many of the stories in her books were located. Her Governor-General's award-winning book Street of Riches (in the original French version, Rue Deschambault ) is set very specifically at this house. The origins of the building design are even presented within the first sentence: "When he built our home, my father took as model the only other house then standing on the brief length of Rue Deschambault — still unencumbered by any sidewalk, as virginal as a country path stretching through thickets of wild roses and, in April, resonant with the music of frogs." Léon and Melina Roy, who had moved to St. Boniface from St. Alphonse in 1905 after Léon was appointed an immigration agent, commissioned Melina's brother Zenon Landry to build this house. Employing a common four-square design, the building was graced by the columned verandah that afforded the Roys and their nine children a welcome and commodious outdoor seating area.

Add to del.icio.us RSS Even when critics focus only on the younger characters in Bonheur d'occasion, they do not mention the generation gap. Faivre-Duboz, for example, in her 2002 article on "le seuil de la modernite" explains the opposing methods in which Florentine Lacasse and Jean Levesque envision their escape from poverty and the strategies that they employ to change their social status (Faivre-Duboz 77). While her analysis of the two methods is excellent, Faivre-Duboz does not discuss the fact that these goals for moving up the social and economic ladder are entirely limited to the thoughts and actions of the younger protagonists of the novel. Representatives of their parents' generation, such as Rose-Anna and Azarius Lacasse or the parents of Emmanuel Letourneau, are trapped in their social castes, without much hope or desire to reach out or up. These three critical works provide us with a sample of the many ways in which scholars have interpreted Roy's text, but for a more thorough understanding of the novel, we must also explore the differences between the older and younger generations. An examination of Roy's images of food and eating practices In Bonheur d'occasion will allow us to do exactly that, and while this subject has not been studied in any systematic manner before, an investigation of this new topic will confirm the importance of the generation gap to the novel's meaning.

Gabrielle Roy's novels and collections of short stories, from her celebrated first novel Bonheur d'occasion (1945), to the present [ Garden in the Wind ], form a coherent body of thought and system of values…. "A Tramp at the Door" is the story of a man who comes to the family's home posing as a relative from the East. His presence serves as a catalyst for the father's memories which flood to the surface. By the end of the tale the reader realizes that the stranger has become a member of the family, demonstrating once again the concept of the "family of man" that is at the heart of Gabrielle Roy's vision. "Where Will You Go, Sam Lee Wong" recounts the life of a Chinese immigrant who sets up shop in a tiny Western town and lives there for twenty-five years. Like a number of Gabrielle Roy's characters in her other works, Sam Lee Wong is a man displaced both physically and spiritually yet never abandoning his hope to be at one...
