Classroom Issues and Strategies
The narrative is best approached from several perspectives, including literary (what makes it a work of literature?); historical (where does fact mix with fiction?); and psychological (what factors may be affecting Rowlandson's interpretation of her experience?). Students respond well to the personal diary-like quality of the narrative and the trials Rowlandson undergoes. Although most side with her, some also recognize the hardships the Indians have experienced at the hands of the colonists.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
It is important for the students to get the straight historical facts about King Phillip's War during which Rowlandson was taken captive. This allows them to see both sides of the issues that caused the "war" and to better understand the Indians' plight as well as Rowlandson's reaction to her eleven-week captivity.
Significant Form, Style, or Artistic Conventions
Discussion of the Indian captivity narrative as a genre is essential. Also, a background on Puritan sermons and their reliance upon the Word in the Bible is important since the movement/structure of the narrative juxtaposes real events with biblical comparisons or equivalents.

Early American and Colonial Period to 1776: Mary Rowlandson (c.1635-c.1678)
Index The earliest woman prose writer of note is Mary Rowlandson, a minister's wife who gives a clear, moving account of her 11-week captivity by Indians during an Indian massacre in 1676. The book undoubtedly fanned the flame of anti-Indian sentiment, as did John Williams's The Redeemed Captive (1707), describing his two years in captivity by French and Indians after a massacre. Such writings as women produced are usually domestic accounts requiring no special education. It may be argued that women's literature benefits from its homey realism and common-sense wit; certainly works like Sarah Kemble Knight's lively Journal (published posthumously in 1825) of a daring solo trip in 1704 from Boston to New York and back escapes the baroque complexity of much Puritan writing. Published by jimgroom July 26th, 2007 in WordPress I have set up a WordPress Multi-User test of CommentPress , a theme brought to you by the fine folks at The Future of the Book (in particular Bob Stein, Jessie Wilbur, and Eddie Tejada). This theme is absolutely sick (a good thing, mind you) because it allows you to literally publish a book online using the blogging software WordPress. But more importantly, it builds in some revolutionary nested comment functionality that re-imagines the space wherein you can have threaded conversations alongside the text to brilliantly capture the actual unfolding of a stream of textual ideas in-line. Very impressive stuff, and I highly recommend you try it out yourself. I was able to cut and paste this public domain text quite easily because the Early Americas Digital Archive has their texts encoded in the TEI (Text Encoded Initiative) XML vocabulary. Now

The Chosen People of God:
Mary Rowlandson's Captivity Narrative
Caroline Gleason
From the violent and brutal clash between Indians [1], and British colonists in Massachusetts during King Philip's War (1675-6) grew a new literary genre. After their redemption, some colonists who had been prisoners of the Indians wrote autobiographical accounts of their experiences. These captivity narratives developed a large audience, and interest in the narratives continued into the nineteenth century.[2] After her capture and redemption, Mary Rowlandson published what some historians call "America's first best seller," entitled Narrative Of the Captivity and Restoratio;t of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson .[3] Through her use of scripture and portrayal of the relationship between the Indians and Puritan colonists, Rowlandson reinforced the traditional concept of providence preached by the founding Puritans fortv years earlier. Mary Rowlandson relied on her faith in the providence of God to sustain herself during her period of captivity. Indians ransacked the town of Lancaster in February of 1675. Rowlandson, the wife of a minister, was one of twenty-four townspeople taken captive.[4] Separated from her husband and all but one of her children, during her captivity she depended upon a Bible obtained from an Indian's plunder for spiritual survival.[5] Her eventual redemption and reunification with her surviving children and husband affirmed her faith in the providence of her God.

Moving Targets: the Travel Text in 'A Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson.' Marilyn C. Wesley Summary: Mary White Rowlandson's account of her and her children's capture by Wampanoag Indians during King Philip's War in 1676 is significant on two accounts. On February 20, 1676, Mary White Rowlandson and three of her children were taken captive at her Lancaster, Massachusetts home during one of the raids of the Native American uprising known as King Philip's War. Her account of that experience, published in Boston in 1682, was the first full-length work of what has come to be known as the Indian captivity narrative, but it is also by nature of its content the first travel book by a woman published in North America. For eighty-two days Rowlandson accompanied her captors - a small band of Wampanoag braves and all of their dependents - on a forced march that traversed and doubled back over a fifty-mile radius of New England between the Connecticut River and Wachusett Mountain. Rowlandson's narrative is really two accounts: the first, the story of spiritual progress

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. Born around 1637 in Somerset, England, Mary White was the sixth of ten children. Her family immigrated to New England when she was very young, settling first in Salem and later in the frontier town of Lancaster, in the Massachusetts colony. In 1656, Mary married Joseph Rowlandson, the Harvard-educated Puritan minister of Lancaster, and for the next twenty years she occupied the role of a Puritan goodwife, tending to her home and raising children. Her life was radically disrupted on February 10, 1676, when a contingent of Narraganset Indians attacked and burned Lancaster, killing seventeen people and taking twenty-four others (including Rowlandson and three of her children) captive. This incident is the basis of Rowlandson's extraordinary account of her captivity among the Indians, a narrative which was widely read in her own time and which today is often regarded as one of the most significant early texts in the American canon. Rowlandson's tale shaped the conventions of the

I had often before this said that if the Indians should come, I should choose rather to be killed by them than taken alive, but when it came to the trial my mind changed; their glittering weapons so daunted my spirit, that I chose rather to go along with those (as I may say) ravenous beasts, than that moment to end my days; and that I may the better declare what happened to me during that grievous captivity, I shall particularly speak of the several removes we had up and down the wilderness.
The First Remove
Those seven that were killed at Lancaster the summer before upon a Sabbath day, and the one that was afterward killed upon a weekday, were slain and mangled in a barbarous manner, by one-eyed John, and Marlborough's Praying Indians, which Capt. Mosely brought to Boston, as the Indians told me.
