By Paul Gray (TIME) Writers, like the rest of us, are entitled to slow down when they approach retirement age. What Philip Roth did, as he began anticipating the popularly euphemistic Golden Years, was to gun his engine and rev out in rapid succession three of the strongest, most vibrant novels of his long career.

Vintage Literary Fiction ISBN: 0679749047 THE COUNTERLIFE may be Philip Roth's most imaginative work of fiction. It is certainly his most original. It speaks of the different paths that a life can take, of the motivations behind the choices that individuals make, and of the repercussions of those choices. It also delves into the Diaspora and the reality of being a Jewish American. Divided into five sections - Basel, Judea, Aloft, Gloucestershire, and Christendom - THE COUNTERLIFE explores the fate of Henry and Nathan Zuckerman as their lives revolve around one event. In Basel, Henry lies dead in a coffin as his brother Nathan contemplates the events that put him there. A heart condition and medicine that made him impotent sent Henry to the operating table for surgery that was risky but would make him able to perform sexually again. THE COUNTERLIFE that Henry was leading, unbeknownst to his wife, becomes the focus of Nathan's thoughts. In the second section, Henry has survived the operation but takes his new lease on life as a push toward his religious homeland and embraces the doctrine of Zionism in Judea. Nathan, at the urging of Henry's wife, goes to see Henry. "The relationship to Henry was the most elemental connection I had left, and however vexing its surface had become after the long years of our estrangement, what was evoked in me by Carol's call was the need to be responsible not so much to the disapproving brother with whom I'd already come to blows but to the little boy in the flannel pajamas who was known to sleepwalk when he was overexcited."

His surreal 1972 novella, The Breast Operation Shylock , Roth spun a big, blowsy yarn about, well, himself. Only this Philip Roth had worked in Athens as an Israeli spy and was trying to steal his identity back from anti-Zionist Philip Roth doppelganger in Jerusalem. "I'm not trying to confuse you," Roth cheekily told an interviewer that year. "This happened. I stepped into a strange hole, which I don't understand to this day." Fast forward to 2004 and Roth has once again invented one of the strangest third-dimensions in American literary history. And once again he has put himself smack in the middle of it.

Philip Roth: The Zuckerman books
Over 21 years, eight novels and 2,200 pages, the titan of American writing has published the most ambitious literary series of our time. By Ken Gordon Pages 1 But don't tell this to Philip Roth. Over the past 21 years the 68-year-old novelist has published the most ambitious literary series of our time: the Nathan Zuckerman books. Taken together, these eight interlocking volumes a trilogy and epilogue ("Zuckerman Bound"), a stand-alone novel ("The Counterlife") and a second trilogy ( "American Pastoral," "I Married a Communist" and "The Human Stain") form an awe- if not envy-inspiring masterpiece. Who knew that authors could still write on such a Proustian scale? The Zuckerman oeuvre weighs in at 2,215 clothbound pages, not counting Nathan's letter to Roth in the author's autobiography ("The Facts"). The hubris! The chutzpah! The word count! Who but Roth would dare pen eight books featuring a single embattled novelist "a being," as he writes in "The Facts," "whose existence was comparable to my own and yet registered a more powerful valence, a life more highly charged and entertaining than my own"? Of course, neither Roth nor Zuckerman is a universally beloved character. Many readers have criticized them both for being narrow, misogynistic, self-involved and self-loathing. And while Roth's fictional Song of Self was too much for some people, he seemed, for a long time, incapable of writing any other way. "One's song isn't a skin to be shed it's inescapable, one's body and blood," he once wrote. "You go on pumping it out till you die, the story veined with the themes of your life, the ever-recurring story that's at once your invention and the invention of you."

http://www.freewilliamsburg.com/november_2001/roth.html
(160 pgs. Houghton Mifflin)
In the middle of all this, along comes Philip Roth's latest book, Shop Talk , (Houghton Mifflin) his first collection of essays or criticism in 26 years. It's a collection of ten interviews with, and essays about writers who have influenced his own work. At the core of the book lies the belief that writing can, in a very real way, be a life-and-death struggle to reconcile the artists' abstract vision of the world to the realities presented by day-to-day existence. Roth chose to speak primarily with writers confronted with physical dislocation from their native land or who have experienced something of a spiritual rift between themselves and their culture, and as such the interviews in the book allude to an almost metaphysical faith in the artists' ability to create under the very difficult conditions forced upon them. The way in which Roth chooses to edit his questions (which are at times much longer than the answers to them) also seems to expose a desire to lay it all out. Many of the questions are more like mini-essays on subjects such as Kafka, censorship, absurdist literature and the tie between personal freedom and creativity that somehow manage to segue into something that might require a response. He harps on the same themes time and time again, and while evoking interesting responses, one almost gets the impression that Roth is making sure to expose all of his own views while asking, in a roundabout way, the opinion of his subjects.

Introduction
Print this section Philip Roth , born in 1933, American novelist, short-story writer, and essayist, whose works reflect the problems of assimilation and identity among American Jews. Like Nobel Prize-winning writer Saul Bellow , who also interprets the Jewish American experience, Roth is a major figure in contemporary psychological realism. Yet he also borrows techniques from fantasy and the grotesque world of Czech novelist Franz Kafka , as in his surrealistic novel The Breast (1972), in which a man turns into a large female breast.
