First I asked long-time area residents for recommendations, checked information on the internet, and asked local residents I knew with doctors in their families. I was assured that he was competent, caring and well thought of. During my initial visit with him, I concurred. He is detail oriented, kind, and knowledgeale. An Introduction Joseph Roth remains little known outside the German-speaking countries, despite being amongst the most prolific and talented writers of the twentieth century. He is best remembered for two novels recreating, respectively, the shtetl of the Eastern Jews ( Hiob or Job , 1930), and the vanished world of the Habsburg monarchy ( Radetzkymarsch or The Radetzky March , 1932). However, Roth was one of the best-known and highest paid journalists in the Weimar Republic, whose articles and Feuilletons about Berlin, Paris, Russia and other places seemed to capture the energy and ambivalence of the Zeitgeist , a culture dazzled by competing ideologies, new technologies, and a burgeoning entertainment industry. His novels from the 1920s, the most famous of which is Die Flucht ohne Ende Flight without End , 1927), portray a damaged generation of young men and women as vividly as those of Hemingway or Fitzgerald.

Joseph Roth (1894-1939) Prolific political journalist and novelist, whose major work, the family history Radetzkymarch appeared in 1932. It depicted the Habsburg empire Austria-Hungary from 1859 to 1916. Roth saw admiringly the old empire as a cosmopolitan world and its decline a sad chapter in European history. His ambivalence toward Western civilization led him increasingly to draw on the heritage of Eastern European storytelling. "The Eastern Jew looks to the West with a longing that it really doesn't merit. To the Eastern Jew, the West signifies freedom, justice, civilization, and the possibility to work and develop his talents. The West exports engineers, automobiles, books, and poems to the East. It sends propaganda soaps and hygiene, useful and elevating things, all of them beguiling and come-hitherish to the East. To the Eastern Jew, Germany, for example, remains the land of Goethe and Schiller, of the German poets, with whom every keen Jewish youth is far more conversant than our own swastika'd secondary school pupils." (from The Wandering Jews Joseph Roth was born Moses Joseph Roth in the German colony of Schwabendorf in Volynia (Austro-Hungarian Empire), into a Jewish family. His father-in-law was an installment seller in Vienna, his uncle a tailor, and his grandfather a rabbi. Roth's father left the family before Joseph was born and died according to Roth in a lunatic asylum in Amsterdam - actually he died in Russia. Roth lived by turns with relatives of his father and mother.

    By J.M. Coetzee
The Collected Stories of Joseph Roth translated from the German and with an introduction by Michael Hofmann Norton, 281 pp., $27.95
"Austro-Hungary is no more," wrote Sigmund Freud to himself on Armistice Day, 1918. "I do not want to live anywhere else.... I shall live on with the torso and imagine that it is the whole." Freud spoke for many Jews of Austro-German culture. The dismemberment of the old empire, and the redrawing of the map of Eastern Europe to create new homelands based on ethnicity, worked to the detriment of Jews most of all, since there was no territory they could point to as ancestrally their own. The old supranational imperial state had suited them; the postwar settlement was a calamity. The first years of the new, stripped-down, barely viable Austrian state, with food shortages followed by levels of inflation that wiped out the savings of the middle class and violence on the streets between paramilitary forces of left and right, only intensified their unease. Some began to look to Palestine as a national home; others turned to the supranational creed of communism. Nostalgia for a lost past and anxiety about a homeless future are at the heart of the mature work of the Austrian novelist Joseph Roth. "My most unforgettable experience was the war and the end of my fatherland
