Dante Gabriel Rossetti's painting "Lady Lilith" (1863: watercolor, 1864-1868?: oil)
In 1863, Dante Gabriel Rossetti began painting his first version of "Lady Lilith," a picture which he expected would be his "best picture hitherto" (Rossetti, W.M., ed. 188). He referred to this painting as the "Toilette picture" in his letters to his mother, highlighting its emphasis on adornment and the central figure's location within an intimate boudoir-like setting (Rossetti, W.M. 188; Radford, xiii). Although the picture is certainly of Lilith, it is interesting to note that he entitled it "Lady Lilith," forcing the audience to focus on her sensuality and womanhood from the outset. How long ago I may not know: But just when at that swallow's soar Your neck turned so, Has this been thus before? And shall not thus time's eddying flight Still with our lives our love restore In death's despite, And day and night yield one delight once more? Sudden Light was written in 1853 or 1854 (according to Rees), and first published in 1863 in Poems: An Offering to Lancashire . It appeared with two distinctly different final stanzas, both of which can be found in the Doughty's edition (referenced below). The above version is the later one, as it appeared in the 1881

The Life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti On April 8, 1826, Gabriele Giuseppe Rossetti married Frances Mary Lavinia Polidori in a Catholic ceremony. For the benefit of her family, they repeated their vows two days later with an Anglican ceremony in the Church of England. Gabriele Rossetti, a poet, lived in England due to his exile from Italy over controversies that arose from his political verses. Frances Polidori's father was an Italian expatriate, and her mother was English. Her brother was John William Polidori, author of The Vampyre. He was also the physician of Lord Byron who referred to him as "A young man more likely to contract diseases than to cure them" (Riede,6). After their marriage, the Rossettis moved into a house at No. 38, Charlotte Street , (later changed to 110 Hallam Street), Portland Place, London, where they had four children. The second born of the Rossettis, born on May 12, 1828, was christened Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti. He is now known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, poet and painter. The Rossettis other siblings included, older sister Maria, younger brother William, and younger sister Christina, who is also well known for her poetry.

The ten endnotes in the original have been converted to in-text citations, and all links have been added by the editor of the Victorian Web iagnosing what he sees as another case of Victorian failure, William Buckler suggests that readers who had enjoyed Pater's "Aesthetic Poetry," the revised version of his seminal review of "Poems by William Morris," would be disappointed by its sequel, "Dante Gabriel Rossetti," an essay Pater billed as a study of "another 'aesthetic' poet." Buckler feels that Pater fails "to fulfill his promise, given at the end of "Aesthetic Poetry," of addressing the theme of 'the desire of beauty quickened by the sense of death as further exemplification of the pagan spirit in aesthetic poetry'" [168]. While Buckler is right to regard "Dante Gabriel Rossetti" as tame in comparison with "Aesthetic Poetry," his subsequent claim that the former "lacks artistic shape" fails to take into account the strong shaping force exerted on Pater's conception of Rossetti's poetry by Ruskin's changing view of his painting. For "Dante Gabriel Rossetti" is shaped in opposition to Ruskin's

dramatic character of the soliloquizer is kept; his pity, his protest against the hardness of nature and chance never make him didactic, or more or less than a man of the world, any more than his shame of his own shame makes him brutal, though in the inevitable flux and reflux of feeling and habit and pleasure he is always seeming on the verge of touching one or other of these extremes. How admirably, too, the conclusion is managed with that dramatic breaking of day, and the effect that it gives to the chilling of enthusiasm and remorse, which it half produces and is half typical of; coming after the grand passage about lust that brings to a climax the musings over so much beauty and so many good things apparently thrown away causelessly. complete of their time; no difficulty is avoided in them: no subject is treated vaguely, languidly, or heartlessly: as there is no commonplace or second-hand thought left in them to be atoned for by beauty of execution, so no thought is allowed to overshadow that beauty of art which compels a real poet to speak in verse and not in prose. Nor do I know what lyrics of any time are to be called great if we are to deny that title to these. Academy , 14 May 1870.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Birth Year : 1828 Death Year : 1882 Country : Italy Not only a painter but also a poet, Dante Gabriel Rosetti was born in London, where his father, an exiled Italian painter and Dante scholar, served as Professor of Italian at King's College. The family was steeped in literature and art. All three of the Rosetti siblings would have important effects on late-nineteenth-century English culture: Christina Rosetti became a well-regarded poet, and William Michael Rosetti became an influential critic. Dante Gabriel Rosetti spent the earliest part of his career torn between painting and writing, but entered the prestigious Saas Drawing Academy in 1841 and was established as a professional painter by the late 1840's. (He continued to write poetry and make transplantations from Italian.) He was a leader in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an English art and culture movement which he founded with the critic Leigh Hunt and the painters Holman Hunt and Sir John Everett Millais. Pre-Raphaelite aesthetics were not perfectly unified: Hunt and Millais preferred to create a naturalistic world in which dramatic events may take place among men and women; Rosetti often drew on classical, Biblical, and literary subjects. Rosetti's Girlhood of the Virgin Mary, exhibited in
