Although the movement started to lose its attraction by the mid-1850s, new disciples Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris brought with them fresh enthusiasm. Rossetti's poems are distinguished by fantasy, leading the reader to times past, to medieval colour, Arthurian legend, and Dantesque mysticism. I have been here before, But when or how I cannot tell; I know the grass beyond the door, The sweet keen smell, The sighing sound, the lights around the shore. (from 'Sudden Light', 1881) For many years Rossetti was known only as a painter. On the other hand he had to face for some time the problem that his paintings were not bought. He idealized his subjects, and used literary themes of medieval romances. His early poems, such as 'The Blessed Damozel', a highly symbolic work, and 'My Sister's Sleep', in which death visits a family on a Christmas Eve, were published in the Pre-Raphaelite magazine The Germ in 1850. "I said, "Full knowledge does not grieve: / This which upon my spirit dwells / Perhaps would have been sorrow else: / But I am glad 'tis Christmas Eve." (from 'My Sister's Sleep') The publication survived for only four issues. Rossetti enjoyed a modest success as a writer when his translations in THE EARLY ITALIAN POETS appeared in 1861. Also the art critic Ruskin started to buy his paintings and spread Rossetti's reputation.

He was a founder member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In his middle years he created vivid watercolours and intricate drawings on themes of love and morality. He is perhaps best known for his images of powerful and mysterious women. These dreamlike and erotic paintings have a magic that still speaks to us today. Rossetti created a new kind of art. He used colour, design and symbolism to suggest a mood and to convey the ideas that were important to him - female virtue, beauty, sensuality, love, death and destiny. This was the first major show of Rossetti's works since 1973. It included over 150 items, featuring many of his most famous pieces. Here you can see a selection of these works and find out more about one of British art's most fascinating figures. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) Rossetti was most notable for being among the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood . In fact, his Girlhood of Mary the Virgin was the first painting to bear the mysterious initials "PRB" after the signature in 1849. It was not until a year later that Rossetti made public the meaning of the initials at which time a firestorm of controversy erupted in which Rossetti and his fellow Pre-Raphaelites were accused of being romanists, blasphemers, atheists, and worse, most notably in a rather shoddy and vicious attack by Dickens on Milais's Christ in the House of his Parents . Most of his early works featured Elizabeth Siddal (who also posed for Millais and Hunt) whom he married in 1860. Two years later she died of an apparently suicidal overdose of laudanum and Rossetti became a virtual recluse and chloral hydrate addict. He was overcome with grief and guilt over having not been attentive enough to his wife and at the funeral he placed the only copy of his complete works of poetry in the coffin with her (in emulation of a story written by his sister Christina Rossetti some 12 years earlier). After Elizabeth's death, his principal subject was William Morris's wife Jane whose full-lipped sultry beauty has become most associated with his name and which generated significant criticism at the time. In 1870 after much soul-searching he had the body of of Elizabeth exhumed to retrieve his book of poetry, much of which was subsequently published. He died 12 years later in 1882 at a resort near Margate in Kent.

I have felt for a considerable time that the biography on VAB of Rossetti is grossly inadequate, and this replacement represents an attempt to address its shortcomings. Biography of Rossetti Early Life Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti was born at Charlotte Street, off Portland Place, London on May 12 th Rossetti senior worked long hours at Kings College, and supplemented his income by private tuition. Neither he, nor his wife socialised outside their home, lacking the necessary income and time. Most evenings there were two or three fellow Italian exiles in the house, and the talk was of art, literature, and primarily politics. Perhaps as a result of this Dante Gabriel Rossetti the adult, was, though enlightened and progressive, disinterested in the specifics of politics. Edward Burne-Jones was similar in his outlook. Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) Dante Gabriel Rossetti was the central figure of the Pre-Raphaelites . Together with Holman Hunt and Millais , he started the original Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was the 'poetic inspiration' of the movement. He later was the centre of a new group of Pre-Raphaelite inspired painters, tempting the young Burne Jones and William Morris to become artists. He was born in London, son of Gabriele Rossetti, who had come to England in 1824 and was professor of Italian at King's College, London. His brother, William Michael Rossetti, became an eminent art critic, and he had two artistic sisters, Maria and Christina. After studying at Sass's drawing academy for four years, in 1846 Rossetti was enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools. However, impatience with the restrictive methods and slow pace of the Academy regime lead him to abandon his studies there, and he then worked for a period under Ford Madox Brown . In 1848 he met Holman Hunt, and they shared a studio together for a time. Through Hunt, Rossetti became acquainted with Millais, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood was born in that year.
