Rossetti, Christina (1830-1894) Her sexuality repressed by religion, Christina Rosetti wrote poetry that included highly-charged erotic female-to-female affection. Rossetti was born on December 5, 1830, to Gabriele and Frances Polidori Rossetti. Her father was Italian, her mother half English and half Italian, and Rossetti grew up speaking both languages. Her family was skilled in literature and the arts. Her sister Maria was to write a study of Dante and eventually become an Anglican nun, her brother Dante Gabriel was to become a famous painter and poet, and her brother William a literary critic and the family's chronicler. Rossetti seems to have been a bright, happy child, but her temperament mysteriously changed in her early teens, and she became serious and introspective. The Rossetti household had always been a religious one of an Evangelical cast. In the 1840s, the family turned to Anglo-Catholicism. The rituals and beliefs of Christina's religion were to influence the direction of the rest of her life very deeply. From ages eighteen to twenty, she was often ill; one doctor diagnosed her illness as "religious mania." Just before she turned seventeen, she accepted a proposal of marriage from a minor artist of her brother's circle, James Collinson, a recent convert from Catholicism. She broke off the engagement when he converted back. To break off an engagement on religious grounds was not unusual for a devout woman of the nineteenth century, but the experience was to become emblematic of the life of renunciation that she would lead.

• " Christina Rossetti: The Patience of Style is an important and overdue contribution to Rossetti scholarship. Beautifully written and carefully argued, this study is unequaled in its consistent focus on Rossetti's exquisite poetic craftsmanship. Attentive to the textual and publication histories of Rossetti's works, as well as to recent scholarship on poetics, Hassett offers original and insightful close reading, acute analysis of the aural effects of Rossetti's verse, and fresh insight into Rossetti's response to poetic contemporaries and precursors."

The Patience of Style

Although the cultural and literary influence of Christina Rossetti has recently been widely acknowledged, the belatedness of this critical attention has left wide gaps in our understanding of her poetic contribution. Often focusing solely on her early work and neglecting her later volumes, many critics minimized her relevance by measuring her stature through either her early poems or her relationships with well-known Victorian literary figures. 1. In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter Long ago. 2. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ. 3. Enough for Him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. 4. Angels and archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air, But only His mother In her maiden bliss, Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.

71. Christina Rossetti: An Appreciation - An Essay By Isabella Fyvie Mayo
This is why we wish to have a little talk over christina rossetti, the poet who not very long ago passed from us, and whom the verdict of critics ventures
http://www.geocities.com/helenvict0r/Mayo_Rossetti.html
Christina Rossetti: An Appreciation - an essay by Isabella Fyvie Mayo, Girl's Own Paper , Vol XIX, March 12, 1898
We women are sometimes sorely tempted to fancy that we have gifts and graces which have been smothered and stultified by adverse circumstances. We bewail that we have never got our chance. It is possible that men are not exempt from this failing, but there are some reasons why they have less temptation to it. All biography is full of stories of men who have triumphed over every sort of obstacle and disability, and a man can scarcely realise any disadvantages of his own lot, whatever they may be, without recalling some other man who was strong and brave enough to master similar drawbacks. Then, again, the difficulties or hindrances to a man's career are generally of an active nature, so that if there be any "go" at all in him, he understands at once that they serve only to test his strength and energy. But with women there is a difference, less indeed than it used to be, but still persisting and likely to persist. First, they have comparatively little biographical guidance. And such biography of women as there is, deals chiefly with women of high place and fortune, of rare, adventurous career, or of tragic eminence of some sort. The peculiar difficulties and discouragements which beset most of their sex, seldom come much into such women's lives. Those women's lives whose history, experience and result would most benefit the majority of their sisters, remain yet for the most part unwritten.

Up-Hill
Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend. But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn. Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when 'ust in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door. Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labor you shall find the sum. Will there be beds for me and all who seek? Yea, beds for all who come.

English poet and a devout High Anglican (see Oxford movement ). Her best-known work is Goblin Market and Other Poems The Prince's Progress Annus Domini (1874), and A Pageant (1881). She was the sister of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti . Her verse expresses unfulfilled spiritual yearning and frustrated love. She was a skilful technician and made use of irregular rhyme and line length. Christina was the daughter of an Italian patriot, educated at home, and sharing in the youthful writings of her brothers. Her first recorded poem was completed at the age of 12. In 1847 a volume of her verses was privately printed, and in 1850, using the pseudonym Ellen Alleyne, she contributed to the famous but short-lived periodical The Germ (which was linked to the artistic theory of the group of painters the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood ). The sadness that pervades her writing may be due to an unhappy love affair in her youth, and to the ill health she constantly suffered.

(1830-1894) born on Dec 05 English poet. "She was one of the most important of English women poets both in range and quality; "Goblin Market," 1862." I might show facts as plain as day:

Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their heads.
The wind is passing by. "The downhill path is easy, but there's no turning back." Better by far that you should forget and smile than that you should remember and be sad. "So now in patience I possess
