Christina Rossetti Be the green grass above me, with showers and dewdrops wet; and if thou wilt, remember, and if thou wilt, forget. Christina Rossetti Better by far you should forget and smile that you should remember and be sad. Christina Rossetti For there is no friend like a sister in calm or stormy weather; To cheer one on the tedious way, to fetch one if one goes astray, to lift one if one totters down, to strengthen whilst one stands. Christina Rossetti Hope is like a hairball trembling from its birth. Christina Rossetti I dream of you to wake; would that I might Dream of you and not wake but slumber on. Christina Rossetti I might show facts as plain as day: but, since your eyes are blind, you'd say, "Where? What?" and turn away.

55 Poems from Sing-Song by Christina Rossetti
Bread and milk for breakfast, And woolen frocks to wear, And a crumb for robin redbreast On the cold days of the year.
There's snow on the fields, And cold in the cottage, While I sit in the chimney nook Supping hot pottage.
My clothes are soft and warm, Fold upon fold, But I'm so sorry for the poor Out in the cold.
I dug and dug amongst the snow, And thought the flowers would never grow; I dug and dug amongst the sand, And still no green thing came to hand.
Melt, O snow! the warm winds blow To thaw the flowers and melt the snow; But all the winds from every land Will rear no blossom from the sand.
Hear what the mournful linnets say: "We built our nest compact and warm, But cruel boys came round our way And took our summerhouse by storm. "They crushed the eggs so neatly laid; So now we sit with drooping wing, And watch the ruin they have made, Too late to build, too sad to sing."

[140] By The Sea
Title : By The Sea Poet : Christina Rossetti Date : 6 Jul 1999 Why does the sea moa... Length : Text-only version Prev Index Next Your comments on this poem to attach to the end [ microfaq Another, and somewhat different set of sea poems. By The Sea Why does the sea moan evermore? Shut out from heaven it makes its moan, It frets against the boundary shore; All earth's full rivers cannot fill The sea, that drinking thirsteth still. Sheer miracles of loveliness Lie hid in its unlooked-on bed: Anemones, salt, passionless, Blow flower-like; just enough alive To blow and multiply and thrive. Shells quaint with curve, or spot, or spike, Encrusted live things argus-eyed, All fair alike, yet all unlike, Are born without a pang, and die Without a pang, and so pass by. Christina Rossetti This is a somewhat disconnected poem - there seems to be a distinct break between the first verse and the rest of it. The first verse seems rather conventional, too - the imagery is neither particularly original, nor particularly well-phrased, and the word 'thirsteth' is enough out of place that it jars. However, the next two verses present a decidedly different slant; a viewpoint more reminiscent of the 'English countryside' class of nature poetry than of most of the sea poems I've read, and very much in keeping with her appreciation of the quieter side of nature. And the last two lines, of course, are pure Rossetti, with the 'go gentle into that good night' theme that characterizes so many of her poems. m. Biography etc: See Minstrels

Christina Rossetti: The Complete Poems
Anglican Theological Review Winter 2003 by Middleton, David Text [edited] by R. W. Crump. Notes and Introduction by Betty S. Flowers. New York: Penguin Books, 2001. lv + 1221 pp. $17.00 (paper). Born on December 5, 1830, in London, Christina Rossetti was the youngest member of one of the most interesting families of nineteenth-century England: her father, an exiled Italian poet; her Italian-English mother, a devout Christian to whom Christina dedicated every one of her many books of verse; her elder sister Maria, an Anglican nun of the All Saints' Sisterhood; her brother Dante Gabriel, the famous Pre-Raphaelite painter and poet; and her brother William Michael, the editor of the works and chronicler of the lives of Christina and Dante Gabriel.

On this day in 1830 Christina Rossetti was born. Although she was only peripherally involved with her brother's Pre-Raphaelites, and claimed to be "content in my shady crevice," Rossetti was not quite the "recluse, saint and renunciatory spinster" commonly portrayed. To those familiar only with her devotional or children's verse, her classic "Goblin Market" will raise eyebrows. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Goblin Market and Other Poems
