Fiction That Comes True Wednesday 2nd January 2008 Paul Calvert interviewed Joel Rosenberg to find out more Joel Rosenberg Joel Rosenberg is an American Jew who seems to have a knack of writing fictional stories that subsequently come true! I asked him about the titles of his books. "The first novel I wrote was called 'The Last Jihad', then 'The Last Days', 'The Ezekiel Option' and 'The Copper Scroll'. My latest book is a non fictional book called 'Epicentre' about why the current rumblings in the Middle East will change your future. The first 4 are novels; political thrillers with a strange way of coming true! My first one 'The Last Jihad' puts you inside the cockpit of a hijacked jet on the first page, hijacked by radical Islamic terrorists coming in on a kamikaze attack mission into an American city. I wrote that 9 months before September 11th 2001 and as the plot of the last jihad unfolds my fictional American President finds himself in a war with Saddam Hussein over terrorism and weapons of mass destruction. THE SILVER STONE by Joel Rosenberg Avon Books 346pp/$5.99/July 1998 Reviewed by Steven H Silver Joel Rosenberg made his name in fantasy writing the "Guardians of the Flame" series in which a group of college students are magically transported to a magical realm during a role-playing game. After several books in that series and two other series, Rosenberg has returned to that same sub-genre with his "Keepers of the Hidden Ways" series in which college students are transported to a magical realm. The Silver Stone is the second book of the new series and follows Ian Silverstein, Torrie Thorsen and their companions as they return to the mythical land of Tir Na Nog. While Rosenberg's earlier series was set in a (to star wtih) generic fantasy setting, this new series relies heavily on Norse mythology, including appearances of Odin, Freya, and other standards of the Vikings, although frequently in skewed roles. Unfortunately, this setting does not work as well as the wide variety of lands Rosenberg has invented, whether the world of the Guardians novels or the vaguely Oriental lands of his "D'Shai" series. Rosenberg uses several viewpoint characters, both the aforementioned college students and the parents and friends of Torrie Thorsen, who hails, ostensibly, from Hardwood, North Dakota (in the Newer World), but really has his roots in Tir Na Nog. Nearly all these characters are representative of the Heinleinian superman (or woman), with the ability to do anything which needs to be done and, perhaps more importantly, the common sense to see what needs doing. Unfortunately, this has a tendency to turn several of Rosenberg's characters more into caricatures.

I did not realize he was part of the Tim LaHaye/Left Behind series cohort when I read the books, but I do note that in the later novels Israel is basically alone and surrounded by its enemies, based on Ezekiel 38-39 interpretations. I mainly always think that apocalyptic events will be decided by Divine Providence (despite Achmadinejad's efforts to hurry up the 12th imam), but one cannot avoid noticing current events that seem in synch with Rosenberg's novels. It would seem unthinkable to me that the US would ever desert Israel or act in such a way that Israel would logically be facing destruction- yet anti-Jewish feelings have evidently not been as high in Europe since the Nazi era, and younger people are reputedly fed such a diet of propaganda in schools and colleges around the world , along with a lack of study of history, that 'it' could well happen again. And while there are some spoilers, I try to keep them to a fairly low level when I talk about unpublished work, since it will be quite a while before most people can read it. (Although a few chapters are currently up as excerpts on Slovotsky's Laws My Booknotes on Joel Rosenberg Home Front Murder in LaMut Paladins Family Matters This is the first work I've seen set in what Joel is calling the "Mordred's Heirs" universe. Where Mordred defeated the usurper Arthur. It's set considerably later, maybe something like 18th century chronologically. But that world's history is rather different. As is its physics there's magic, and there seem to be gods as well. The main characters are some Knights of the Order, which serves the Crown of England. It seems to have been started by Morgaine, who is still running it. They seem to specialize in "live swords", swords with a soul trapped in them. "White" swords have an innocent soul voluntarily resident, "red" swords have...other things. One of them appears to have the soul of Genghis Khan in it. These are...very powerful, apparently. We see an island sink, for example. One of the things that's nicely done is there's very little infodump. Information accumulates slowly, it isn't delivered wholesale.

Details here Going to be a fun class; I've got several of my folks taking their renewal training, and that makes it a particularly good class for folks to take to get their first permits, as they get to hear not only from me, but from other people who have been carrying for close to five years. (I've had my own permit for, well, somewhat longer.) I know that some instructors are going to be doing renewal-only classes. I thought about doing that, but one thing that I've noticed in doing upgrade training over the past few years is that some people didn't get what I think of as the full deal the first time around. There's quite a few good instructors out there, but there's also quite a few who, while they usually cover the minimum required by the law, don't do all of what I think is clearly important. Trying to sort out those who got inadequate training in the first place is something I think would be, at best, difficult to do, and I don't think it does any harm at all for folks who have been carrying to review all of the issues. 1 comment comment on this Friday, January 25th, 2008
