When Kathryn Lindskoog asked me to review Ronald Bresland's fine book, I realised quickly a need to deal with David Bleakley's equally fine book, published a year before. Bleakley's has a similar theme, but his treatment is quite different, so that there is little overlap in content between the books. I David Bleakley has produced an enjoyable and readable personal memoir for the Centenary of Lewis's birth in 1998. The author is well-known in Northern Ireland. He holds the CBE, the honour that C.S. Lewis, turned down. David began his public life as a Labour MP in the Northern Ireland Parliament, and he became a Minister in the Northern Ireland Government. In the spiritual sphere, Bleakley was General Secretary of the Irish Council of Churches and became President of the (Anglican) Church Missionary Society.

Etymology:
From John Lyly's ornately florid Euphues, the Anatomy of Wit (1579): from the Greek, "to grow, bring forth"
Examples:
  • "The freshest colours soonest fade, the teenest razor soonest turneth his edge, the finest cloth is soonest eaten with moths, and the cambric sooner stained than the coarse canvas: which appeared well in this Euphues, whose wit, being like wax, apt to receive any impression, and bearing the head in his own hand, either to use the rein or the spur, disdaining counsel, leaving his country, loathing his old acquaintance, thought either by wit to obtain some conquest, or by shame to abide some conflict; who, preferring fancy before friends and his present humour before honour to come, laid reason in water, being too salt for his taste, and followed unbridled affection, most pleasant for his tooth."

52. Sean Griffin : Open House

Sean Griffin
Open House
  • Pattycake , for 2 people
for kitchen table, boy, girl, and 2 knives Call it Sleep , for 3 people
  • Open House is a series of intermedia works initiated by Sean Griffin and Aiyun Huang. The 5 parts of Open House suggest different rooms of a house. Our intention is to examine the domestic space and many of its political implications by employing brutal games and musical theatricality.
    Pattycake
The first piece, Pattycake is to be performed in a child’s room. It examines the violence of children’s clapping games and the process of rote learning implied by child development brochures. The complex physicality of the gestures patterns paired with children’s poems, stream-of-consciousness text, distils the nature of repetition and rote.
    Adieu, notre petite table!
The second piece, Adieu, notre petite table! a setting for kitchen table, boy, girl, and 2 knives to be performed in the kitchen, examines the enforced sex roles implied by the space and dramatizes the struggle for unison and transcendence. Out of phase rhythmic patterns in the dangerous game of stabbing a knife between one’s fingers are paired with texts by authors considered the to be the greatest (Nabokov, Shakespeare, Plath, etc.) with text by Amanda McKittrick Ros, considered by many to be one of the worst authors in the English language. Texts from self-help manuals from the 1980’s exploring recovery and transcendence are pitted against layers of random and sometimes conflicting gesture patterns.

Whitehead Excursion Station is where all the locomotives and carriages in the RPSI's Northern Ireland collection are stored. It is where all locomotive maintenance and overhaul is carried out. The station consists of a station building (housing a shop open on our Summer Steam days), a platform, a short running line for public demonstrations and to allow the shunting of our stock. Beyond the station are the sheds housing the engineering equipment and stores necessary to maintain Irelands mainline steam train fleet. This webpage contains details of how to get to Whitehead Excursion Station , a short history of the Station and a review of the Station today.

      Amazingly Alliterative Amanda
I have already written about two people who became famous by virtue of their total lack of talent, or even competence, in their respective fields, and whose utter sincerity and devotion to their work gave them a place in the affections of millions. They were the singer Florence Foster Jenkins and the poet William McGonagall
A friend reminded me last week of a third who might be added to make up a trio of superlative awfulness: the novelist and poet Amanda McKittrick Ros
      Her prose was described thus:
Alliterative, flowery, with metaphor extended to breaking point and beyond, while meaning peeks intermittently through and between the words, pressed Humpty-Dumpty-wise into service beyond their accepted limits
and the style was established in her very first romantic novel, Irene Iddeslie (1897)
The silvery touch of fortune is too often gilt with betrayal: the meddling mouth of extravagance swallows every desire, and eats the heart of honesty with pickled pride: the imposury of position is petty, and ends, as it should commence, with stirring strife

    58. Sirius Fiction | Peace Timeline(s)
1954 O Rare amanda! The Life of amanda mckittrick ros by Jack Loudan, first edition 1954. This is the book Den references at the public library (p. 160).
    http://www.siriusfiction.com/peacetimeline.html
Last Updated: April 29, 2002 Roy C. Lackey's Timeline for Peace. Foreword by Michael Andre-Driussi I had seen two timelines for Peace: one by Gregory Feeley, unpublished but widely disseminated in an online forum in 1991/92; and the one by William M. Schuyler, Jr., published in The New York Review of Science fiction in 1996. In gross outline, Feeley's charts AD Weer's life from birth in 1914 to death in 1975, supposes that Weer killed many if not all of the other characters and spent a decade or two in prison for killing his father; Schuyler's has Weer born in 1904 so that his parents are held up in Europe by the sudden outbreak of WWI, and that the date for the coldhouse prank is a lie (either by year or Weer's age) to hide Weer's culpability. When Doug Eigsti's project came along, it seemed to me that a timeline was in order. So I finally got around to trying my hand at it, and dove into the text for that purpose. For my time-anchor, I chose the appearance of Liberty magazine in Dr. Black's office when Weer was four years old: the only record I could find of a magazine with that name suggested that it first appeared in 1924. If this was the same magazine that was in Dr. Black's office, then Weer was born in 1920. As such, the date of the coldhouse prank was a lie, in agreement with Schuyler. I also used Crazy Pete as a date marker, since his story is fully developed in "The Changeling" (a short story collected in Castle of Days) : he is on the island from 1963 onward, and since Weer makes reference to him on the island (p. 46), it seems significant.
