Ros, Amanda McKittrick (1860-1939), novelist. Born in Drumaness, Co. Down, she trained as a teacher and found a post at Larne. She published two romances, Irene Iddlesleigh (1897) and Delina Delany (1898), both in an idiosyncratic manner that provides unconscious comedy of a high order. Her two volumes of verse, Poems of Puncture (1913) and Fumes of Formation (1933), evince a virulent hostility to lawyers and literary critics. A last novel, Helen Huddleston (1969), was completed by Jack Loudan. ADVERTISEMENT Home Business Entertainment Food ... More... • More on C.S. Lewis's Favorite Bad Writer The Oasis of Futurity
  • Amanda McKittrick Ros is the greatest bad writer who ever lived. A master - or rather mistress, for she was nothing if not formidably female - of both poetry and prose, a gloriously over-the-top writer who was utterly convinced of her own greatness and of the merits of her work. Irene Iddesleigh is a tale of a mismatched marriage. It contains one of Amanda's most famous quotes: "Speak! Irene! Wife! Woman! Do not sit in silence and allow
    the blood that now boils in my veins to ooze through
    cavities of unrestrained passion and trickle down to drench me
    with its crimson hue!"
    Her second novel, Delina Delaney begins with possibly the most baffling opening sentence in any literature: Have you ever visited that portion of Erin's plot that
    offers its sympathetic soil for the minute survey and scrutinous
    examination of those in political power, whose decision has
    wisely been the means before now of converting the stern
    and prejudiced, and reaching the hand of slight aid to share

    The Oasis of Futurity
    A Shrine to the Late-Lamented Amanda McKittrick Ros Amanda McKittrick Ros was the writer of three peerless romantic novels as well as dozens of singular works of verse. Acclaimed in her lifetime by such notables as D. B. Wyndham Lewis, Mark Twain, James Agate, Aldous Huxley and Anthony Powell, she is nowadays largely forgotten.
    These few pages are dedicated to her life and works, with the fervent wish that she be restored post-haste to her rightful place in the literary canon. EXCITING NEWS! You may read a letter in Amanda's hand to a man who had ordered a copy of Irene Iddesleigh With or without trousers? That rare volume

    The Amanda McKittrick Ros Revival
    According to BBC Northern Ireland , "literary critics and readers are being invited to judge if Amanda McKittrick Ros is the world's worst writer."
    This seems like a fun contest but I think its already proven. She's so unfathomably Vogon awful she wins hands down. And she's capable of the most arresting literary effects too, so there's some kind of elemental power at work here.
    Observe one of her famous Odes to a Lawyer, from "Poems of Puncture" (1912):
    Beneath me here in stinking clumps
    Lies Lawyer Largebones, all in lumps;
    A rotten mass of clockholed clay,
    Which grown more honeycombed each day.
    See how the rats have scratched his face?
    Now so unlike the human race;
    I very much regret I can't
    Assist them in their eager 'bent.' Unbridled hatred, cannabalistic urges and an Athenian contempt for corruption and (of course) homosexuality - not bad for a mild mannered railway station masters wife, eh? You can view first editions on her work at the New York Public Library. It should be one of the first things you do when you visit Manhattan.
