Marvin Bell and Pattiann Rogers on Poetry
I am through the last of the coursework for my first semester at Pacific, which means a brief respite until the residency at the end of June. One recent boost to tide me over was this series of video interviews with Marvin Bell and Pattiann Rogers . The cinematography is gorgeous, and Bell and Rogers have some interesting things to say about poetry and teaching. Requires Quicktime. The Brother Swimming Beneath Me
from manuscript to first book
Monday, November 19, 2007
a poem by Pattiann Rogers
Inside God's Eye
As if his eye had no boundaries, at night
All the heavens are visible there. The stars drift
And hesitate inside that sphere like white seeds
Sinking in a still, dark lake. Spirals of brilliance,
They float silently and slowly deeper and deeper
Into the possible expansion of his acuity.
And within that watching, illumination like the moon
Is uncovered petal by petal as a passing cloud clears
The open white flowers of the shining summer plum.
Inside god's eye, light spreads like afternoon spreads, Accepting the complications of water burr and chestnut, The efforts of digger bee and cuckoo bee. Even the barest Light gathers and concentrates there like a ray Of morning reaching the thinnest nerve of a fairy shrimp At the center of a pond. And like evening, light Bends inside the walls of god's eye to make Sky-wide globes of fuchsia and orange, violet-tipped Branches and violet-tinged wings set against a red dusk.

  • Edinburgh (in Edinburgh: City site)
At the city's core is the Old Town's Castle Rock, a plug of black basalt sealing the vent of an extinct volcano. It stands 250 feet (76 metres) above the valley floor and is crowned by the famous Edinburgh Castle, which, subtly floodlit every night, stirs even the habituated townsfolk. Glacial ice once flowed from the west and around the Castle Rock's flanks, depositing the accumulated debris...

As if I were blind or deaf. I want you to describe
The balance of the thin-leafed sea oats and the eel grass
Bending in the wind. I want to know about the occasional
Yaupon and everything you see feeding there and all the details

Every striation of the sky defined by color, the stationary
Motions of the sea. I want you to name the sea birds
One by one and describe the patterns of their wings unfolding
And tell me how they look to you against the sky, And on the beach, how they have learned to follow the edges Of the sea and what it is you think they find there In that toe-deep surf. I want to know what you hear
