  • Result: AN Rating:4 Cause: MA Result: MT/MU Significance: + Description: + Saturation: + . One of my favorite books... It's about a British youth who is sent to the country for reasons of health, and while there he discovers an ancient Celtic helmet which allows his consciousness to enter into the body of a black stag. As the story progresses, the stag gradually takes control, and the boy's spirit becomes trapped in the deer's body until... Well, you'll just have to read the book to find out!

The Shattered World [BBT]
[Baen; 1985; 0671559516; $3.50] [BB]
  • Main character becomes a bear. ...A fantasy novel with an interesting twist. It is one of the truly 'original' books I have read recently. There is a fair amount of shapechanging both voluntary, and involuntary in it. Rating: 4 Cause: MA Result: LY/PE/MD Significance: Description: + Saturation: 0 . The protagonist is a sort of cursed version of a werebear, but the longer he stays in bear form the more bearlike he acts and thinks, and the longer he stays human the harder it is to control the bear when he eventually changes into it.

Easton Press Information The Easton Press has been publishing fine quality leatherbound books for almost 30 years, using 22kt gold stamping on the covers, fine endpapers and sewn-in satin bookmarks. Although they offer a few series, most of their books are far-ranging in interest and topic, much more diversified than Franklin Library was. Many of their older books have increased tremendously in value, while others languish at about half the original price. Most of their series books tend to hold or increase in value, especially the two signed first edition series - Signed First Editions and Signed First Editions of Science Fiction , which are issued in limited numbers, usually between 1,000 and 1,500 each. Their Signed Modern Classics Another series of note is the Masterpieces of Science Fiction, which includes about one signed book for every 10 unsigned ones. While containing some very nice titles, this series is a mish-mash in that titles are often removed from the series and others substituted, including the signed titles (my list below is simply the latest version, subject to change). Nevertheless, the signed titles do very well on the secondary market and even the unsigned ones are in demand, if in Fine condition. The Library of the Presidents , another popular series, is now down to only three signed titles (Presidents Carter, Ford and Bush), making the previous signed offerings by Nixon and Reagan even more valuable. The unsigned editions do not tend to do well by themselves, but a complete collection commands a good price.

Spider Robinson Interview
Conducted by Ernest Lilley
Also: Free Lunch Review Author's own website: www.spiderrobinson.com Possibly Spider Robinson should consider adding Murphy to his cast of Callahan Characters, as pretty much everything that could go wrong in getting this interview did. But it was worth waiting for, as you'll soon see, as Spider spills the beans below... - editor SFRevu: Spider, much to my astonishment, I really enjoyed Free Lunch. I picked it up ready to go after its inherent Heinlein Heresy with a hot poker...but found I was laughing too hard to swing it. As usual. There seems to be a certain amount of Citizen of the Galaxy in Free Lunch. Is that my over active imagination, or are you combining tribute and sendup? Spider Robinson: No sendup; pure tribute. I deliberately selected the title as homage to Robert, when I suddenly realized the rules John Varley and I had set up for our collaborative novel appeared to allow an exception to Robert's famous "TANSTAAFL" dictum. (They don't, of course; we cheated.) Herb approved the name at once. I've always wished we could have completed the project in time for Robert to get the joke. I think he would have chuckled. And then broke our balls in some diabolically hilarious way, down the line. God, I miss him. Q: But didn't you just throw the notion of a closed economic system out the window? Heinlein never would have said, there aint no such thing as a free lunch...given the existence of a non-causal universe, perpetual motion, or time travel. On the other hand, he attacked his own idea in Waldo and Magic Incorporated, didn't he?

Interview with Spider Robinson
Here is our complete interview with Spider Robinson. It also appears in Challenging Destiny Number 25. CD: Could you tell us about the Variable Star project? SR: It was the most exciting, gratifying, terrifying and enjoyable experience of my 35-year career. Every day of my life (since I was six, and read my very first book, Rocket Ship Galilelo ), I’ve had imaginary conversations with Robert Heinlein but never have I strained so hard to hear his answers. Basically, I reached a point in my life where I wanted to read a new Heinlein novel so badly, I didn’t care if I had to do all the typing and marketing. It came about by dumb luck. At a Worldcon panel in Toronto the assistant archivist mentioned the discovery of a novel outline Robert had never gotten around to writing. A stranger in the back of the room named Kate Gladstone yelled out, “You should get Spider Robinson to finish that book.” On the panel were Robert’s agent and the man who controls his estate. The rest, as they say, is social studies... See the book’s Afterword. And check out http://www.variablestarbook.com
