Spider Robinson didn't start out with dreams of becoming a writer of world-renowned science fiction. Not even close. Spider Robinson's early dreams and ambitions were mostly around being a folksinger. Robinson laughs now that there "was an extremely limited window for that career." And the window was closing rapidly. Around the time he got good enough to start getting regular gigs, the window closed. "There was room for one James Taylor and the position was filled, thank you." Robinson's many and vocal fans are most likely pleased by this development. Not only did it mean that the hilarious and visionary writer would actually at some point begin to write, it also would lead to the birth of one of Robinson's best loved heroes, the recurring Jake Stonebender from Spider's Callahan series of books. Like Jake, Robinson is tall and lean to the point of stringbeany-ness. "If you saw me naked you'd see I look like a snake that swallowed a dog." This in spite of that fact that he gained a whopping 25 pounds after quitting smoking last year, a gain that has seen him pushing up over 145 pounds.

Melancholy Elephants
by Spider Robinson
This story is dedicated to Virginia Heinlein She sat zazen, concentrating on not concentrating, until it was time to prepare for the appointment. Sitting seemed Nothing must interfere with this meeting, or with her role in it. Dozens of man-years and God knows how many dollars, she thought, funnelling down to perhaps a half hour of conversation. All the effort, all the hope. Insignificant on the scale of the Great Wheel, of course . . . but when you balance it all on a half hour of talk, it's like balancing a stereo cartridge on a needlepoint: It only takes a gram or so of weight to wear out a piece of diamond. I must be harder than diamond. Rather than clear a window and watch Washington, D.C. roll by beneath her car, she turned on the television. She absorbed and integrated the news, on the chance that there might be some late-breaking item she could turn to her advantage in the conversation to come; none developed. Shortly the car addressed her: "Grounding, ma'am. I.D. eyeball request." When the car landed she cleared and then opened her window, presented her pass and I.D. to a Marine in dress blues, and was cleared at once. At the Marine's direction she re-opaqued the window and surrendered control of her car to the house computer, and when the car parked itself and powered down she got out without haste. A man she knew was waiting to meet her, smiling. "Dorothy, it's good to see you again."

Robinsonia
Robinsonia Eric Maltaite ; translation by Joe Johnson ; lettering by Ortho. New York : Nantier Beall Minoustchine, 2000. 53 p. : col. ill. ; 30 cm. (Eurotica) Story follows parts of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe; Defoe is depicted as a gay character. Call no.:
Summary:
In the 1640s, Robinsonia is tricked onto a ship that supplies "girls" to the British colonies. The ship is boarded by other slavers who take her to a Moorish slave auction. She escapes in a boat with an African woman, and they are picked up by other slavers heading for new world plantations. This third ship is wrecked and only Robinsonia survives, washed up on a tropical island. She builds a home, starts a journal, and studies a book of erotic drawings she has salvaged from the ship. She rescues a "girl Friday" from cannibals who sail over from a neighboring island for a barbecue. Robinsonia would prefer a man, however. Friday helps build a canoe so they can go find some men. The cannibals come back with another victim, Friday's sister, and a sick young white man named Dan. The two women rescue the prisoners, and Friday takes the canoe to take her sister home. Robinsonia stays with Dan to get him back into shape. Dan turns out to be no fun, he's gay, but The Bounty shows up with

http://www.eblong.com/zarf/bookscan/booklist.html
My Book List
This page is generated from my library database, which I generated with a bar-code scanner (with some help from the Web). Yes, I really own all these books. Have I read them all? The vast majority, certainly. In this list, there are probably ten or twenty books that I don't ever intend to read. (Don't ask why I own them.) Another ten, perhaps, are books that I intend to read someday, but have never been in the right mood to pick up. And then there are recent purchases (which may not even be on this list yet). The recent-purchase pile is usually one or two books, but it can reach a height of ten or even twenty if I find a juicy new used-book store or go to a con. Then it shrinks. Any book still unread after a month, if not sooner, qualifies as "read-someday". Do I ever get rid of books? Rarely. I have a separate list of the 15 books I have sold or given away. (Please don't write and ask if you can buy books from me. The answer is generally "Sorry, no".) Do I remember what's in all of these books? Hell no. Did I enjoy these books? Mostly, yes. I don't have reviews of my collection, but I have written brief comments about the most recent acquisitions.

Spider Robinson: boosting morale in a society with plenty of time to complain
By Tasha Robinson pider Robinson sold his first science fiction story in 1971 while working as a night watchman. "I had absolutely nothing else to do all night but stare into space or make something up," he explained in a recent phone interview. "So to kill time, I pecked out a little story about where I would rather bea bar where they'd let you smash your glass in the fireplace. When I was done, I looked at the pile of paper and I said, boy, you know, that looks just like a manuscript, like real writers produce. It would fool a civilian, probably. If I was to mail it off to magazines that buy stories, well, then they would send me rejection slips, and then I could impress women! I'd be a tragic figure of a man, I'd be the Failed Artist! How romantic can you get?" Instead of a rejection slip
