Why the Irish Came to Peterborough
Furthermore, parliament was also intent on increasing the number of settlers available to defend the border of British North America (Canada) from the United States. Men in these Irish families could help form the basis of a militia if border disputes flared up. Religious factors also motivated Irish people to venture into the unknown and settle in the "New World". Irish penal laws severely restricted the ability of Irish Roman Catholics to practice their faith, own land, or even vote in elections.
Peter Robinson
He sailed for Britain and began forming a workable emigration plan and recruitment program. He promoted the scheme in southern Ireland (see portion of broadside, above) and some 50,000 people applied to start new lives in a strange and distant land.
In 1823 the first wave of Irish settlers (568 people) began the long and dangerous journey to Upper Canada with their final destination in eastern Ontario (the Lanark, Perth, Ramsay township area). Two sailing ships - the Hebe and Stakesby The ships landed at Quebec City and the passengers first boarded steamships, then barges, and then wagons for the final leg of the journey. Settlers were given free provisions, tools and farmland.

JACQUES THE KNIFE
Andrew Stuttaford
I doubt he needed it, but a reminder of the opposition that George W. Bush will continue to face in the EU comes in the form of new maneuvering by Jacques Chirac. The old crook has now successfully recruited Spain into a new axis (hey, it’s the Daily Telegraph’s word, not mine) designed to limit Tony Blair’s impact on European diplomacy. Blair’s response, weirdly, is to continue to press Brits to agree to the ratification of the EU’s draft ‘constitution’, a document that would, for all practical purposes, ensure that the UK could no longer pursue its own foreign policy.

HOLY TOLEDO! Andrew Stuttaford More good news out of Ohio. Posted at 06:21 PM MOVING ON Andrew Stuttaford Blogger Norman Geras on the aftermath of the election: “Liberals and leftists should stop wailing and ask themselves some tough questions: first and foremost, where they themselves might have gone wrong (so many of them), repeatedly wrong, in their alignment within international conflicts - and why. You lose a democratic battle, you fight on, that's all. You make the argument again or differently. You look to see whether there are mistakes, misconceptions, bad assumptions, bad practices, on your own side. You try to persuade people. You show some elementary civic respect to those on the other side.”

Space Physics: Solar and planetary radio emission processes are studied, including nonlinear, stochastic, and wave-particle aspects. Applications to type II and III solar radio bursts, planetary foreshock emissions, and the auroras are pursued. Comparison with spacecraft observations is undertaken in collaboration with workers in the US and Europe. Plasma turbulence and nonlinear waves: Theories and applications of strong Langmuir turbulence and wave collapse are studied. Large scale electromagnetic Langmuir turbulence simulations are being undertaken in collaboration with workers at Berkeley and Caltech. Neurophysics: A continuum model of EEG waves has been developed and is being applied to calculate spectra, impulse responses, stead states, and dynamics of the electrical activity of the brain. Comparison with clinical observations is being carried out in collaboration with the Brain Dynamics Center of Westmead Hospital and the Mental Health Research Institute , Victoria.

"I'd love to write a really great American private-eye novel in the American style. But that's a voice that is alien to me. I can appreciate the style, but if I try to write in it, it sounds false. It's like my trying to speak with an American accent. Even my Los Angeles book, No Cure for Love , wasn't written in first-person, and the main character was a Brit in LA. I didn't try to do the Marlowe voice. I would find that very difficult, given my literary and English backgrounds. In terms of style, I probably have more in common with Victorian novelists than I do with American hard-boiled, first-person private-eye writers." Living With Music:
A Playlist by Peter Robinson
By Dwight Garner Peter Robinson On Wednesdays, this blog is the delivery vehicle for “Living With Music,” a playlist of songs from a writer or some other kind of book-world personage. 1) Lay Your Head Down, Keren Ann. I discovered Keren Ann only about a year ago, and now I can’t get enough of her. She has made five CDs, the first two all in French, and some of them are quite difficult to get hold of. She bears comparison with Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval, but remains very much a unique talent, her voice a little huskier, with less echo. Picking one song was difficult, and I first came up with “The Harder Ships of the World,” a haunting number from her most recent CD, which is full of such treasures. “Lay Your Head Down,” though atypical in some ways of the rest of that CD, is as near a perfect five minute summer song as you can get. It makes you feel good with its gently rocking rhythm, handclaps, harmonica and chanting choir, and the minimalist guitar solo is a joy to hear. 2) Rain
