Robinson completes Mars trilogy, turns to Antarctica
Jan. 21, 1996
Elisabeth Sherwin gizmo@ dcn.davis.ca.us Exactly what would it take to make Mars habitable for men and women from Earth? How would the atmosphere have to be manipulated to allow for human existence, how could the freezing, rocky soil be made to tolerate plant growth and how could the social and political problems that plague Earth be avoided in a new society? Science fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson , 43, has thought long and hard about the problems of creating and sustaining a new society on Mars. He spent six years working on a 1,600-page trilogy devoted to the future history of Mars. First came "Red Mars," then "Green Mars." "Blue Mars" will be out in June. Robinson, his wife, Lisa Howell, and their two young sons live in Village Homes in West Davis. He has supported himself as a writer for the past decade and in the process established a reputation for not only being a good writer but making sure good, believable science was part of his science fiction. His first book, "The Wild Shore," published in 1984, became the first in a trilogy about Orange County, post-nuclear holocaust. Robinson grew up in Orange County. He earned a bachelor's degree at UC San Diego and a master's at Boston University. He returned to San Diego for a Ph.D. in English and American literature, which he finished in 1982. Robinson and his wife lived in Zurich for two years while Lisa completed a post-doc in environmental toxicology.

Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson
Mars Forty Signs of Rain fit my current interests, so I decided to give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. You will find this novel in the science fiction section of your book store, but it would be equally at home on the mainstream shelves. Forty Signs of Rain is the first installment of a new trilogy. It has the feel of a long, patient, set-up piece; there is very little action and plenty of character description and development as the four main characters go about their daily lives while environmental catastrophe builds up in the background. If you want an intelligent take on environmental change, skip The Day After Tomorrow and read this instead. Forty Signs of Rain by Kim Stanley Robinson

6. KSR quotes (Kim Stanley Robinson)
In general I don't like the idea of a writer fitting all his works into a single fictional history. It sacrifices new thinking to a generally unimportant consistency. Continue to:

Kim Stanley Robinson on his next novel, The Galileans

"My research for The Years of Rice and Salt included lots of reading about the birth of science," said Robinson. "I learned more than I could use in that book, so I thought it would be good to return to the matter, as being crucial to society today and, if I wrote about it, a particular kind of science fiction. Galileo is central to the scientific revolution, and also he gave me a number of science-fictional angles from which to approach the topic. He's a great character."

Dustwrapper not price-clipped, a little wrinkling to edge. 414pp. The world's last unstripped asset, Antarctica is in danger of becoming a free-for-all - oil reconnaissance teams intent on mass extraction, adventure travellers trailing waste across the tundra, and strategic interests covertly vying for influence. A gripping, provocative eco-thriller. Against a majestic backdrop, multi-award-winning sf author Kim Stanley Robinson paints his latest big picture by focusing on the personal triumphs and tragedies of the innocents, the activists, and the ruthless exploiters who are fighting their version of the future for Earth's last great wilderness. The Demimonde is a forum for discussion related to author Kim Stanley Robinson and topics related to his writing, ranging from environmentalism to space exploration. While it is themed around KSR, people who have not read KSR but are interested in the topics that come up in his writing are welcome here.
The term 'the demimonde' is a reference to a region on Mars in Robinson's epic Mars Trilogy. There is little or no relation to the dictionary definition of the word, which is 'any group whose activities are ethically questionable.' What it refers to in the trilogy is a network of settlements that choose to exist 'outside the net.' Make a Contribution View Contributors
