by Tom Robbins The Origin of Cigars

On the morning after the lunar eclipse,
she awoke with a funny feeling,
massaged her belly with hurricane drops,
rubbed barbeque sauce on her eyelids,
donned a necklace of alligator bones
and walked down to the Caribbee
where, asquat in a spice canoe,
she gave birth to a green banana.
"Not mine!" growled her husband, pitching the new baby overboard into the path of a barracuda, who seized it like bait just as lightning's alchemical zippo ignited the infant's nib. Transformed into a pufferfish, the 'cuda was soon upstaging cookfires as it smoke-ringed past the strand in luxurious loopy-doops, languid, masculine, respiring like some kind of don waiting for a cognac rain.

TOM ROBBINS
''I've been reading Roberto Calasso's The Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony. It's the director's cut of Greek mythology, a digital remix of the Iliad and the Odyssey-Homer after an eye operation. It starts out as a commentary on myth and turns into an endless parade of insights into life, death, and goofiness. My favorite line, about why Zeus decided to stage the battle of Troy and have all the heroes killed, is something like, 'In the maximum pointlessness lies the maximum splendor.' I'm also on page 46 of Finnegans Wake. It's been on my bedside table for 14 years-I've been using the Evelyn Wood technique, reading a little every night before sleep. It has a definite influence on one's dreams.'' Tom Robbins is the author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues.

69. Tom Robbins On His Back

Skip ads and navigation SPI MySeattlePix Reader Page ... Main Tom Robbins On His Back One of the pleasures of working at the P-I, aside from the pleasure of still being part of a going concern at 101 Elliott Ave W. (reports of our demise were premature), is that writers show up to talk to us. At least they do now. Before this year, the only writers in the P-I building were the ones on staff, which Tom Robbins used to be, back in the early '60s. We run selected video shorts from these sessions on our Website ( here ) and articles on any topic guest writers want in the print version as well as online, but the real pleasure is being there. Sadly for me, I was on deadline when Robbins showed up late last May. Again, though, being on staff, I get the insider's advantage of reading about it in an internal publication called "Between The Lines," covering "word-smithing, beat-busting, risk-taking and other acts of journalistic head turning," written by M.L. Lyke. Robbins has had more than his share of misfortunes of late, including multiple eye surgeries that prevented him from writing for the entire 2006 year. So instead of putting in his regular two pages a day, he spent time dreaming up pilots for TV shows. My favorite is his idea for a Helen Keller crime show: "She's blind, she's deaf, she's mute, but she can smell a rat a mile away." I'd watch that.

FOSCHINI HITS A DECLINE - Tom Robbins
Mon, 14 Jan 2008
Sales calculated at the same store have hit a decline at FOSCHINI, clothing retailer. This shows that buyers are now spending less on expensive optional products. With declining sales of cars, houses and electrical appliances being evident from last year, the semi-durable clothing sector is an indicator of how bad the consumer downturn will get. Food is the only retail category to be moderately unharmed by the 4 percentage point increase in interest rates over the past 19 months. According to FOSCHINI, sales at comparable stores for the three months to December increased 0.4% from a year earlier. But considering the store's own inflation rate of 3%, this gave a real decline of 2.6%. FOSCHINI's sales including new stores increased by 4.3%. FOSCHINI says that it expected to continue growing profit. FOSCHINI shares lost 4.15% to R44.51 on Friday. The retail sector in general dropped 1.13%.

Free Speech : Censorship Tom Robbins Reads Tropic of Cancer: Banned Books Week 2001 Banned Books Week 2001: Tom Robbins reads from Tropic of Cancer Photo by Lawrence Gerald Hear author Tom Robbins read an excerpt of Henry Miller's novel Tropic of Cancer as part of our Banned Books Week audio special. In 1950, the director of the ACLU of Northern California, Ernest Besig, attempted to import Miller's Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. U.S. Customs officials seized the books and Besig went to court to defend the work against obscenity charges. Finally, in 1964, thirteen years after the novel was first banned, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the work was not obscene, declaring that "material dealing with sex in a manner that advocates ideas, or that has literary or scientific or artistic value or any other form of social importance, may not be branded as obscenity and denied the constitutional protection."
