Let me say off the bat that this is the first time I have read anything by Tom Robbins. This may shock and disgust many an avid subway and after-dinner-when-nothing-good-is-on-TV-reader, but I have never read anything by one of the preeminent cult humorist of modern times. That being said, this review will be from virgin eyes, as if this eighth Robbins novel is that of an upstart's first attempt. And after that being said, I really enjoyed Villa Incognito , and expect big things from Mr. Robbins in future ventures and I can only hope the rest of the world will find a place for him, and perhaps, in time, one or perhaps more kind webmaster will even dedicate a fan page to him.

http://www.rambles.net/robbins_skinny.html
Tom Robbins,
Skinny Legs and All
(Bantam, 1990)
Skinny Legs and All is Tom Robbins' take on Middle Eastern politics and the frenzy of the millenium, seen through the eyes of a silver dessert spoon, a can of pork-n-beans, a dirty sock, a sacred conch shell and a centuries-old painted stick. At least partly. Robbins spends the rest of the novel mocking the New York City art scene, expounding his theories on Goddess religion and Biblical lore, and mixing up a grab-bag of Southern-fried religion and ethnic entrepreneurship. Welcome to the wonderful world of Tom Robbins. The action revolves around Ellen Cherry Charles and Boomer Petway, newlyweds en route from Seattle to the art scene of New York City in an Airstream turkey. Unfortunately, art doesn't bode well for the couple, and wedded bliss soon becomes a wedded mess. Boomer runs off to Jerusalem, where he can weld to his heart's content, while Ellen Cherry takes up waitressing at Isaac and Ishmael's, a restaurant owned by an Arab and a Jew. (Talk about bad ethnic jokes!) But the fun doesn't stop there. Events begin to escalate when a pock-faced Virginian evangelist, intent on rebuilding the Third Temple and ushering in the Second Coming (even if he has to do it by himself), comes to town, and a young Middle-Eastern nursing student named Salome bumps and grinds to the mind-altering Dance of the Seven Veils. In fact, New York City may become more of a war zone than the Holy City itself.

Who is Tom Robbins?
ad_unit_target='mainAdUnit'; X Close this window Tom Robbins is an American novelist known for his complex, surreal , and well-researched books. He has only written a handful of novels since his career began in the 1970s, but all of them are highly acclaimed and carefully crafted. Tom Robbins' style is characterized by precise, if bizarre, word choice and by themes involving social commentary and enhanced states of consciousness, be it through drugs, mysticism, or religion. Tom Robbins has also produced a collection of his shorter works, Wild Ducks Flying Backwards , published in 2005. His second novel, Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (1976), was adapted into a film by Gus Van Sant and starring Uma Thurman in 1996. Tom Robbins was born Thomas Eugene Robbins on 22 July 1936 in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. He began studying journalism at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia in 1954, but left shortly afterwards due to disciplinary problems. Tom Robbins relocated to New York City, where he hoped to start a career as a poet. He joined the Air Force in 1957 and served for three years in Korea. In 1960, after returning to the United States, Tom Robbins again tried his hand at formal schooling, attending the Richmond Professional Institute - now the Virginia

"Skinny Legs and All"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark FEB 10, 1998) When I picked up this book, it had been awhile since I read a Tom Robbins novel Oh, what a pleasure to read his quirky, humorous yet intelligent style again. This one is a great story about religions and what they mean to people and more specifically, to objects that are not so inanimate. Pivotal to the story is one belly dancer and just as necessary is one Arab, one Jew, a welder and her artist husband, a can of beans, conch shell, a painted stick, a spoon and a dirty sock. I've read his first three novels, loved them, but I think this one tops them because he's tackling religion and the Middle East.

"Perhaps the most terrible (or wonderful) thing that can happen to an imaginative youth, aside from the curse (or blessing) of imagination itself, is to be exposed without preparation to the life outside his or her own sphere the sudden revelation that there is a there out there."
