Arthur Rimbaud
One of the world’s most influential writers, “child-poet” (Secondary Moon / Primary Venus) Arthur Rimbaud, né Jean-Nicolas-Arthur Rimbaud, was born in Charleville, France, almost directly under the setting position of his Primary Pluto. His equally underaspected Primary Venus rises over the northwest corner of France, thereby placing his entire native land under a Primary Venus-Pluto Transcendental Midpoint-Field. Rimbaud completed his first collection of verse when he was only sixteen years old, then he ran away to Paris. As we can see in his astrocartography, the French capital lies precisely in the center of his Venus / Pluto Transcendental Midpoint-Field.

Unfortunately all diacritical marks have been effaced in this online version. Arthur Rimbaudthe meaning of Arthur Rimbaud's workhas periodically haunted me since I first read him in translation at age 16. Around a year after that first reading the following lines appeared in my high school's literary magazine over the name Delahaye:
O, to be a mad poet!
I want to be a mad poet!
Smear my summer legs with blood.
Let me vomit the countryside. I want a fat grey catfish in my head.
There's a dozen dusty holes in my chest.
I signed this bit of juvenilia with the name Delahaye after the friend of Rimbaud's youth Ernest Delahaye. (N1) I too considered myself a friend of Rimbaud.
At university, I initially took up the study of French in order to get closer to Rimbaud and his project. I majored in Comparative Literature and eventually finished a Masters in French. During those seven years of study, my interests in literature moved in different directions. No longer studying French mainly for Rimbaud's sake, I translated prose poetry from Max Jacob's Le Cornet a des a work I still consider to be of unique importanceand read Flaubert and Baudelaire. For a while I thought of continuing with French in the PhD. program, intending to do research on Rabelais (a writer for whom Rimbaud had contempt) or another of the great writers of the late Medieval or early Renaissance period. I didn't continue with this PhD.

chez Arthur Rimbaud
Spent three days in Charleville-M©zi¨res, Arthur Rimbaud's hometown. Once a prosperous community if one judges by the beautiful architectural remnants, but now striving under economic depression ("to rent" signs all over the place, even in the best avenues). Rimbaud said : "on ne part pas" (there's no going away). And the house where he lived between 1869 (the year of the Education Sentimentale!) and 1875 is still there, untouched by death, time or wars. Then you approach the railway station and discover the Rimbaud monument... (His memory is best celebrated in Marseille on the Prado beach by a modern sculpture in wood facing the sea : j'ai heurt© savez-vous d'incroyables florides...). Right above a view of the M©zi¨res Courthouse, a fine building of the sixties (1966 exactly). Publi© par PYC   l'adresse Libell©s : Rimbaud courthouse

I was born there: I'm so sorry you had to spend 3 days there! The town's been hit very hard by economic depression in the 1980s but know, they tell me, things are much better. I don't go back to check.

Le Parnasse Contemporain They traveled together to Brussels and London and acknowledged each other in their writing. Rimbaud, for example, playfully refers to Verlaine's eyes in his famous poem "Vowels" (1871). The couple may appear masked in the section of A Season in Hell Nearly all of Rimbaud's mature poetry was written during his love affair with Verlaine. The latter encouraged him in the creation of The Illuminations in London in 1872 and A Season in Hell in 1873. After the affair ended in July of 1873, when Verlaine shot him in the wrist during a violent quarrel, Rimbaud essentially abandoned his career as a poet. After a Brussels printer published A Season in Hell in October 1873, providing a way for Rimbaud to send a few copies to his friends in Paris, Rimbaud's interest in his own work declined. During 1874 and 1875, he traveled widely in Europe. In the spring of 1876, he enlisted in the Dutch army, but soon abandoned that, preferring to travel to Sweden, Denmark, Greece, and Egypt, where in 1880 he was a coffee buyer and in 1887 sold guns.

[contributed by Fiona Webster, with Encyclopedia Britannica as main source for biographical material and other commentary] Jean-Nicolas-Arthur Rimbaud (b. Oct. 20, 1854, Charleville, Franced. Nov. 10, 1891, Marseille), was a French poet and adventurer who won renown among the Symbolist movement and markedly influenced modern poetry. Biographical notes:
  • grew up at Charleville in the Ardennes region of northeastern France, the second son of an army captain and a local farmer's daughter; his father spent little time with the family and eventually abandoned the children to the sole care of their mother, a strong-willed, bigoted woman who pinned all her ambitions on her younger son, Arthur
  • published first poem in 1870; obsessed with poetry, spending hours juggling with rhyme; this firm grounding in the craft of versification gave him a complete, even arrogant confidence and an ambition to be acknowledged by the currently fashionable Parnassian poets, of whom he was soon producing virtuoso pastiches

ISBN: 0060955503 Arthur Rimbaud is remembered as much for his volatile personality and tumultuous life as he is for his writings, most of which he produced before the age of eighteen. This book brings together his poetry, prose, and letters, including The Drunken Boat, The Orphans' New Year, After the Flood, and A Season in Hell, considered by many to be his. Complete Works is divided into eight seasonsChildhood, The Open Road, War, The Tormented Heart, The Visionary, The Damned Soul, A Few Belated Cowardices, and The Man with the Wind at His Heelsthat reflect the facets of Rimbaud's life. Insightful commentary by translator and editor Paul Schmidt reveals the courage, vision, and imagination of Rimbaud's poetry and sheds light on one of the most enigmatic figures in letters.
