Executive summary: Une Saison en Enfer Military service: Dutch Army Le Bateau ivre , which is now hailed as the pioneer of the entire "symbolist" or "decadent" movement in French literature in all its forms. He sent it to Paul Verlaine Une Saison en Enfer Les Illuminations , and they had created a great sensation in Paris. In this collection appeared the sonnet on the vowels, attributing a different color to each: A noir , E blanc , I rouge , U vert , O bleu voyelles . But the author, in his Abyssinian hut of palm-leaves, was, and remained, quite unconscious of the fact. In March 1891 a tumor in his knee obliged Rimbaud to leave Harrar and go to Europe for surgical advice. He reached Marseilles, but the case was hopeless; the leg had to be amputated, and Rimbaud died there in hospital on the 10th of November, 1891. The poems of Rimbaud all belong to his earliest youth. Their violent originality, the influence which they have exercised upon younger writers, the tumultuous existence of their author, and the strange veil of mystery which still hangs over his character and adventures, have given to Rimbaud a remarkable fascination. His life has been written by Paterne Berrichon (1897), and valuable reminiscences by his sister, Isabella Rimbaud. His

With bald patches rather badly hidden; Then the fat gray neck, broad shoulder-blades
Sticking out; a short back which curves in and bulges;
Then the roundness of the buttocks seems to take off;
The fat under the skin appears in slabs: The spine is a bit red; and the whole thing has a smell Strangely horrible; you notice especially The buttocks bear two engraved words: CLARA VENUS Hideously beautiful with an ulcer on the anus.

An Introduction to Rimbaud
Tony McNeill
Introduction Rimbaud is known as the poet who stopped writing poetry.
Norbert Bonenkamp Whereas Victor Hugo wrote poetry most of his adult life, Arthur Rimbaud's poetry was written between the ages of 16 and 19. Rimbaud's precocious eruption of poetic activity lasted only three years and was followed by silence. Around this explosion of unsettling poetry a potent myth has been spun: Rimbaud the genius, the prodigy, the meteor: Éclat, lui, d'un météore, allumé sans motif autre que sa présence, issu seul et s'éteignant.
Stéphane Mallarmé
Life (1854 - 1891) An issue that all our readings of Rimbaud, and by this I mean both our readings of his poetry and of the critical discourses about Rimbaud, must somehow negotiate is that of the relationship between his life and his work. A number of critical writings on Rimbaud have tended to privilege the biographical context in their readings of his poetry. Many argue, for example, that images of adventures running aground (cf. `Le Bateau ivre') refer back to Rimbaud's claustrophobic childhood. We should, however, remain wary of the dangers of this kind of biographical reductivism. Not all rebellious teenagers write great poetry and, as readers, we risk falsifying the complex reading experience that Rimbaud's work demands by smoothing over any difficulties we encounter by referring them back to the `facts' of his life. Work Four principal stages can be discerned in Rimbaud's poetic career:

Arthur Rimbaud : Le Voyant magnifique

Illustrated by Norman MacDonald On a sweltering day in August 1880, a tall, thin blue-eyed Frenchman walked into the offices of Viannay, Bardey et Cie. in Aden, Yemen, and asked for a job. He said he was from the Jura, and had lately overseen a gang of laborers in Cyprus; the work had been finished, so he'd come south to find something else. He had a letter of introduction. He knew some Arabic, too. For the next eleven years, until he died miserably in a hospital in Marseille, Arthur Rimbaud, France's great 19th-century enfant terrible, whose poetry was to exert enormous influence on French literature, lived mostly in Aden and in Harar, Ethiopia, working in the coffee trade. He was, in fact, a pioneer in the business, the first European to oversee the export of the celebrated coffee of Harar from the country where coffee was born. He was only the third European ever to set foot in the city, and the first to do business there. How his life swung from the sublime to the commercial is one of the most perplexing mysteries in the history of modern literature. When Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) abandoned poetry altogether in 1873, at the age of 19 or 20, he left behind a small, incendiary and revolutionary body of work that included "The Drunken Boat,"

Walker F ew writers depend so heavily on the intricacies of a given language as the poet, for whom each word is often essential. Every major language can provide examples of fine poetry, rich in the demeanor and presence of language, filled with the richness that makes a language unique and interesting. Some would argue that without the variance found in dissimilar languages poetry would fail us as a comprehensive art; could we have the peculiar grammar of Emily Dickinson beside the lyricism of Baudelaire if both poets were constrained to the same language? However, such richness provides difficulty for those who are called upon to translate poetry from one language to another, a common task in the case of well-known poets and a growing area of interest for the works of lesser-known contemporary poets. This article examines issues germane to the translation of poetry using the works of the nineteenth century French poet Arthur Rimbaud as its example.
