Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud pronounced /ˈr¦mboʊ/ ; or in French IPA [aʁtyʁ ʁɛ̃ˈbo] October 20 November 10 ) was a French poet , born in Charleville . His influence on modern literature, music and art has been enduring and pervasive. He produced his best known works while still in his late teens— Victor Hugo described him at the time as "an enfant Shakespeare"—and gave up creative writing altogether before he reached 21. He remained a prolific letter-writer all his life. Rimbaud was a restless soul, travelling extensively in three continents before his premature death from cancer less than a month after his 37th birthday.

Arthur Rimbaud Now, only recently, being on the point of giving my last squawk, I thought of looking for the key to the ancient feast where I might find my appetite again. Charity is that key. This inspiration proves that I have dreamed! "You will always be a hyena..." etc., protests the devil who crowned me with such pleasant poppies. "Attain death with all your appetites, your selfishness and all the capital sins!" Ah! I'm fed up: But, dear Satan, a less fiery eye I beg you! And while awaiting a few small infamies in arrears, you who love the absence of the instructive or descriptive faculty in a writer, for you let me tear out these few, hideous pages from my notebook of one of the damned. A Season in Hell
Arthur Rimbaud , b. Oct. 20, 1854, the precocious boy-poet of French symbolism, wrote some of the most remarkable poetry and prose of the 19th century. His highly suggestive, subtle work drew on subconscious sources, and its form was correspondingly supple and novel. Rimbaud has been identified as one of the creators of free verse because of the rhythmic experiments in his prose poems Illuminations (1886; Eng. trans., 1932). His

Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) French poet and adventurer, who stopped writing verse at the age of 21, and became after his early death an inextricable myth in French gay life. Rimbaud's poetry, partially written in free verse, is characterized by dramatic and imaginative vision. "I say that one must be a visionary - that one must make oneself a VISIONARY." His works are among the most original in the Symbolist movement, which included in France such poets as Stéphane Mallarme and Paul Paul Verlaine, and playwrights as Maurice Maeterlinck. Rimbaud's best-known work, LE BÂTEAU IVRE (The Drunken Boat), appeared in 1871. In the poem he sent a toy boat on a journey, an allegory for a spiritual quest. It is found again.
What? Eternity.
It is the sea
Gone with the sun.

In 1871 he met poet Paul Verlaine (1844-1896), whose collection of poems, Les Amies (1867) had been banned by a court. Verlaine was an alcoholic who had a taste had a taste for absinthe. He left his family - his young wife, Mathilde Mauté, was expecting a baby - and fled with the teenaged Rimbaud to London in 1872 to live a Bohemian life. Most of the time they lived in poverty and abused drink and drugs. Rimbaud accepted uncleaniness, including body lice, but Verlaine was horrified by the English cuisine, especially "the abominable oxtail soup": "Fie on such a horror! A man's sock with a rotten clitoris floating in it." Their relationship ended next year in Brussels, when Rimbaud tried to break off the relationship. Verlaine, drunk and desolate, shot Rimbaud in the wrist with a 7mm pistol after a quarrel. Verlaine was tried for attempted murder and sent to Brussels' Amigo Detention Center. Rimbaud returned to the family farm in Roche, where he finished his UNE SAISON EN ENFER (

Priez pour lui Arthur Rimbaud is buried in Charleville-Mezieres Cimetière, Ardennes, France. (See map...ref no. 2) At the age of six Rimbaud's father deserted the family and Rimbaud was brought up by his mother who he later resented for her conservative attitudes. He was also fiercely opposed to orthodox religion. Rimbaud was a passionate and tortured individual who found his poetic voice early. By the age of 17 he had already written his accomplished poem Le Bateau ivre In 1870, at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war, he ran away from home and lived for almost a year as a vagabond. In 1871 he met fellow poet Paul Verlaine and they embarked on a tempestuous love affair. (He had previously sent poems to Verlaine.) During their time together they made two trips to London and it was here that Rimbaud began his famous prose poem

Read the first chapter of "Rimbaud Complete", edited and translated by Wyatt Mason. One explanation is that he was a brilliant brat: Arthur Rimbaud, the enfant terrible of late 19th century French verse, dashed off poems in puberty that grown men continue to admire and study.
Others dismiss Rimbaud's work as little more than an artistic line drawn through his lascivious affair with the French poet Paul Verlaine, calling Rimbaud "a pouting poster boy of the bohemian left."
The author who's just published a new translation of Rimbaud says that's all too simple, that Rimbaud deserves celebration, careful reading and a fair shot from the academy. Trouble is, Rimbaud's story is just so juicy. The kid writes his last poem at age 21, then disappears on a Capitalist quest into the jungle of East Africa for the second half of his life.
