61. Der Panther By Rainer Maria Rilke

Rainer Maria Rilke a translation by C. F. MacIntyre The Panther His sight from ever gazing through the bars has grown so blunt that it sees nothing more. It seems to him that thousand of bars are before him, and behind him nothing merely. The easy motion of his supple stride, which turns about the very smallest circle, is like a dance of strength about a center in which a will stands stupefied.

Rilke, Rainier Maria (Rainer Maria Rilke)
Posted April 14th, 2006 by Taran Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.
    Rainer Maria Rilke

His tired gaze - from passing endless bars -
has turned into a vacant stare which nothing holds.
To him there seem to be a thousand bars,
and out beyond these bars exists no world. His supple gait, the smoothness of strong strides
that gently turn in ever smaller circles
perform a dance of strength, centered deep within
a will, stunned, but untamed, indomitable. But sometimes the curtains of his eyelids part,
the pupils of his eyes dilate as images
of past encounters enter while through his limbs a tension strains in silence only to cease to be, to die within his heart.

After reading Rainer Maria Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet, I feel as though I almost know Rilke. Yeah, yeah, I hear you a writer's worst nightmare, right? The obnoxious reader/fan who feels like s/he knows him so well from reading his books that s/he seeks out the writer's telephone number and calls him up, addressing him by name. Don't worry, I'm not that bad and, anyway, Rainer's long dead.
So. Ten letters to Franz Xaver Kappus the "young poet" of the title and a chronicle written by M.D. Herter Norton of Rilke's other writings and doings during the time of his most famous correspondence. I suppose that's really not much to know of a person's entire being...but Rilke puts a lot into a few relatively short epistles (and M.D.H. Norton's chronicle weren't none too shabby, neither).
You'd expect a poet to put a lot into even a small number of words, right? Anyway

Poem — Rainer Maria Rilke
from Sonnets to Orpheus (Part I)
by Rainer Maria Rilke (translated by C. F. MacIntyre)
Though the world change so fast
as cloud-shapes manifold,
all things perfected at last
fall back to the very old. Past flux and vicissitude,
more freely and higher,
still endures your prelude,
god with the lyre. We do not understand
grief, nor love's phases,
and what death keeps concealed is not unveiled. Only song through the land hallows and praises. Spring has come back again. The earth is like a child who has memorized poems, oh, many! . . . now it seems worth the effort, for she wins the prize. Her teacher was strict. We love the white hair of the old man's beard. When we ask what the green and the blue are, right off she knows every word. Lucky earth, with your holiday, and all the children coming to play! We try to catch you. The gayest will do it. Teacher trained her until she knew it, and all that's printed in roots and long unruly stems she sings in a song. We are the drivers. But take time's stride as trivial beside what lasts forever.

Rainier Maria Rilke Rainier Maria Rilke, the most important German poet of the first years of the twentieth
century, published a 'breakthrough' book of poems in 1907 called Neue Gedichte , or
New Poems . Although he would go on to other great accomplishments in potery his "Requiem for a Friend" written after the death of his close companion Paula Modersohn-Becker (whose portrait of Rilke is reproduced below), his late inspired Sonnets to Orpheus and Duino Elegies ), the poems of the New Poems represent one of the great achievements of modern poetry. Poems about objects, and thus about encounters with the world of objects, they push human consciousness to some of its limits. Powerful yet accessible, clear yet hovering close to the unsayable, these poems are among the finest lyrics ever written. To hear a discussion of seven of these poems, click on the portrait of Rilke below The poems discussed are: "The Panther"
"Archaic Torso of Apollo"
"Portrait of My Father as a Young Man"
"Self-Portrait, 1906"
"Going Blind"
"The Swan"
"The Last Evening" To hear the discussion of Rilke, CLICK on this protrait
