His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief solitude , and profound anxiety — themes that tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets. He wrote in both verse and a highly lyrical prose . His two most famous verse sequences are the Sonnets to Orpheus and the Duino Elegies ; his two most famous prose works are the Letters to a Young Poet and the semi-autobiographical The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge . He also wrote more than 400 poems in French, dedicated to his homeland of choice, the canton of Valais in Switzerland

Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) Writer and poet, considered one of the greatest lyric poets of modern Germany. Rilke created the "object poem" as an attempt to describe with utmost clarity physical objects, the "silence of their concentrated reality." He became famous with such works as DUINESER ELEGIEN and DIE SONETTE AN ORPHEUS. They both appeared in 1923. After these books, Rilke had published his major works, believing that he had done his best as a writer. "Works of art are indeed always products of having been in danger, of having gone to the very end in an experience, to where man can go no further." (from Letters As a poet Rilke made his debut at the age of nineteen with LEBEN UND LIEDER (1894), written in the conventional style of Heinrich Heine. In Munich he met , the talented and spiritied daughter of a Russian army officer, who was 14 years his senior. Salomé influenced him deeply; they become lovers in 1897. In Florence, where he spent some months in 1898, Rilke wrote: "... I felt at first so confused that I could scarcely separate my impressions, and thought I was drowning in the breaking waves of some foreign splendor." Salomé had been a friend of Nietzsche, who broke off his relationship with Salomé in December 1882. Later she married professor Friedrich Carl Andreas. Other important women in Rilke's life were the young sculptress Klara Westhoff, the Swedish writer Ellen Key, Marthe Hennebert, who was a young girl who become a textile designer, the great Italian actress Eleonora Duse, Marie von Thurn und Taxis, and Hertha Koenig, both very wealthy, and Nanny Wunderly-Volkart.

Austro-German poet. After an unhappy childhood and an ill-planned preparatory education, Rilke began a life of wandering that took him across Europe. His visits to Russia inspired his first serious work, the long poem cycle The Book of Hours (1905). For 12 years beginning in 1902 his geographic centre was Paris, where he researched a book on Auguste Rodin , associated with the great sculptor, and developed a new style of lyrical poetry that attempted to capture the plastic essence of a physical object; the results were New Poems The Notebook of Malte Laurids Brigge (1910). After 13 years of writing very little because of writer's block and depression, in 1922 he finally completed the 10 poems of the Duino Elegies (1923), a profound meditation on the paradoxes of human existence and one of the century's poetic masterpieces. RILKE,
Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) Rainer Maria Rilke is enjoying great popularity. A search of the Internet reveals an abundance of web pages that feature his work. Most of the sites are in German, but many are in English. The numerous biographies highlight his poverty, depression, his restless wandering, troubled relationships with men, his short and sporadic relationships with women, some also discuss homosexuality. Indeed Rilke is a poet for modern times. All of his preferences, problems, foibles and flaws documented in great detail. Rainer Rilke was born in Prague, December 4, 1875. He died on December 29, 1926. Rilke was subject to a military education at an early age and then studied business. Neither of these areas interested him, and he never completed his university education. In 1897 he met Lou Andreas-Salome. She remained a part of his life for many years after their love affair ended. He later married the sculptor Clara Westhoff. The marriage lasted nearly one year.
